  1. Afternoon all, the Swiss Ace trialed today on a reasonable surface here at Cambridge, in Heat 17. With the addition of blinkers, he jumped from the barrier and put himself in the trial, sitting 3 wide on the pace. He travelled well and gave a kick in the straight, running 3rd, a better effort. Andrew Calder rode him and said it was a good enough trial, and I am thinking a dead to slow track will suit him, so i better get in to naming mode, and we can get him registered and one lucky (well hopefully) new owner who came up with what I think is the best name will be the receipeint of a 5% share. Good luck to everyone that forwarded their choice.

Agree , I cannot see the issue , had some interference given easy time up straight , put a line through run and judge it on its merits next time . What's the owner supposed to say , the horse is shit but I just keep it in training anyway , just to make people happy . He is a decent horse .Like the owner or not like the owner don't mean shit when assessing a racehorse.

I remember that race well, Glynn tucker said if it won he would jump off the grandstand. Every mat in the olds and my grandparents house had a track on the back of it and the brother and myself would use old race cards from Ellerslie (hundreds unused from Xmas carnival)to create fantasy meetings and I’d commentate Keith Haub Style ... you suggest the impossible it normally bites you...RIP Mr Tucker

I find this post a little perplexing. The industry being behind them in "Troubled times"-are you inferring to their up coming court cases? Do you really think they have the full support of all involved in the industry for that? The reason they are 1 and 2 on the premiership tables is because of their talent. That doesn't change no matter whether they have a pending court case or not. That is the number 1 reason why they are supported, they repay that support with their driving skills. Do you really think if they were a couple of drivers at the bottom anyone would support them. I think not. So to draw the inference that the support relates to their actions is not a totally fair one. How many others out there actually are thinking they could just as easily be in the same predicament had similar police resources been used to target them. Come on be honest about that when you give that statement some thought. Finally why is it some think you either support them or you don't. Why can't those who think like that realize that many believe no one is perfect, you can be the best in the industry but still make errors of judgment which you later regret, and that those errors of judgment are not the only thing people judge you on. And at the end of the day, why should someone care about others views, should they not self reflect and realize they are not infallible, and that mistakes exposed is not the be all and end all. Just learn from them and then move on when the dust is settled. It could be argued that point of view is part of the reason why they are number 1 & 2 on the premiership.

The fact that both John and Blair are still supported by pretty much the same clientele now as they were prior to all the drama speaks much louder to their reputations than the hugely expensive, over-hyped, drawn out and largely fruitless enquiry that kick started all the drama in the first place! Anyone who has been around this industry for any length of time knows that everyone has bent a rule or two at some point. But it's a long bow to draw to spin the odd minor indiscretion into race fixing. Unless of course you have a hugely expensive, over-hyped, drawn out and largely fruitless enquiry to try and justify. Random conversations where you're gathering "competitive intelligence" does not constitute race fixing. Telling a mate that you think you can win race 3 does not constitute race fixing. Making a snap decision in a race that with the benefit of hindsight was wrong does not constitute race fixing. Asking a rival driver pre-race if they intend to hold the lead does not constitute race fixing. John Dunn deserves to be inducted into the Hall Of Fame simply for his driving tactics. He's virtually the only driver in NZ that's fearless no matter how many of the All Stars team up against him!

  8. And 'batten' hurdles ? How long since we have raced horses over batten hurdles? It must be a copy-and-paste from twenty years ago.

Interested to no exactly what it is that you “cannot stand” about Brian’s call’s? Which current caller would you rate of a higher standard all round, meaning pre race tipping and overall in depth knowledge of greyhound racing as a whole?

Tennant Creek with horses dodging crocs in backstraight has as well, don't think starter has left horse behind , loaded them back to front, let them go with assistant in front of stalls , let them go with traffic cones across backstraight or tractor driver fxxked up and started to move stalls before horses out at that venue either but I stand to be corrected .The croc burgers on course no doubt better than the on course catering at most places here .

Certainly was Chris. I posted this story three years ago on Race Café (found it) Posted March 28, 2016 Gubes. Garry Phillips, as he was apt to do throughout his career when Trentham, was on was staying at our home. He popped over the hill to see his younger brother Paul who lived in Wainuiomata at the time and Bert Furness rang wanting to speak with Garry. When I said he wasn't here at the time he told me that he had Supreme Glory in the Oaks and wanted Garry to ride her and would I get Garry to ring him when he got back. About an hour later he rang back (Garry was still out) and said to me that Supreme Glory would be a good ride and rang back a third time. In the interim another couple of trainers had rung and left messages for Garry. In the end he took another ride and as you mention Jimmy Walker, (Garry's brother-in-law) ended up with the ride. Bert Furness was pretty bullish about her chances when I was talking with him so I backed Supreme Glory that day and enjoyed the big dividend. Another good thing happened one Labour weekend and Garry was staying and I'm not sure if his first name was Alf or Alan Christmas and he trained a horse called Bush Singlet. He rang and asked Garry to ride Bush Singlet in the 1400m or 1600m race at Trentham on the Monday. Garry had ridden the horse at it's previous easy win at Masterton paying about $6 from memory. We went round to the dairy to get the Best Bets on the Sunday morning and when we checked the fields Bush Singlet wasn't in the race at Trentham but was listed to run in a race at Awapuni on the Monday. Garry says. "Silly bugger, why would he ring me here in Wellington to ride the horse at Awapuni., surely he would know I'm riding at Trentham." So we get home and Garry rings him and he assures Garry the horse is in at Trentham. The Best Bets/Turf Digest and I think the papers also had left Bush Singlet out of the Trentham field. Long story short Bush Singlet bolts in and pays $18 and boy wasn't there outrage later from the public, letters to the Friday Flash etc etc. The race was the first leg of the treble that day also. Only one treble in those days and the other two legs were won by Varnamo and Coeur D'Or paying over $1300.00.

Supreme Glory it was Crusty. One and only win of her career. She had a further 31 starts after winning the NZ Oaks in the hands of Jimmy Walker for a couple of thirds.

And before Henry Cecil Aunty Angela was married to Edward short stuff. Flying on Cathay was always extra fun while he was around. Angela’s daughter Genevieve knows Prince William and Harry well and she went to Prince Harry’s wedding. Here’s a link to Edward’s obituary. He was a pretty successful man not unlike my grandfather Owen Hannigan and my great uncle Merv Corner. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/obituaries/1385597/Edward-Scott.html
