The young man has been driving really well this season and boasts an impressive UDR. You can back a horse that he is driving and not think that with him in the cart it is a negative. He is starting to get a knack of making the correct split second judgements at the right time during a race, and also judge tempo; quite rare for a junior driver to display. I am surprised that he doesn't seem to pick up a lot of drives outside of his parent's stable, I think he is a bit underrated.

He is on good horses as you say and does have a good strike rate but i think he needs to improve his tactics at times. He seems hell bent some times on getting to the front at all costs and this has resulted in most of his poor performances IMHO Greg

  8. There haven't been all that many big offers turned down over the years that have worked out well in the end. It gets tricky when it is quite a big ownership and they are only going to get $100,000-$150,000 each. If it is one owner up for $2m the decision can be easier.

NZ had 9 years of 'kick the can down the road' Govt. Labour always inherit a mammoth stinking mess from right wing Govts, who govern for the few at the expense of the...many.

    Jacinda Ardern

Another lefty con job , cindy must have known Winston wouldn't support this so why bother ? ah that's right winne is all but gone and if he goes she goes so let's make him the hero and try to boost his ratings and cindy finishing statement , a capitol gains tax will never be introduced while I'm PM , she would like to save herself as well . I would rather talk about the Hospital boards being in financial trouble , the child poverty doubling , homeless numbers going through the roof , unemployment rocketing up . only a few kiwi build homes actually sold 17?? , the transport sector being harassed , potential corruption in NZF , a billion dollar blowout on the rail project in AK , the massive increase in number of kiwis under surveillance (prior to CH CH ) . cindy joining the tppa , rents up , it goes on . And last , what do all of the rich people do when labour comes to power , they get richer because labour hasn't got a clue , they certainly don't go away , take rents , rents go up because labour hands out more money and landlords know this so rent goes up , the tenant is no better off but the landlord is . This lot is hopeless .

Reckon they should give it to Darren Weir, and then he pocks the prodder in the box where the money goes and after a few sparks fly it'll probably run the 3200 metres in 3.15.

    Have we or how big

I think we need an industry funded full time course.amateur courses helped with basics but say a month would be great.not cadets but have people ready to step in a stable running.trainers are busy.

  16. It is the age old problem you have always had in harness racing. Other than the Purden lot, trainers seem to hate winning races as they are petrified at the thought of their horses having to race in a higher grade. The winner of a harness race now only gets 50% of the stake, with money taken off the winners and placegetters to subsidise the also rans. In a $10,000 race at Addington for instance the second horse only gets $1,400; years ago they would have got $2,000. Down in deepest darkest Southland maidens race for more than winners. The rating system encourages horses to miss a place altogether if they aren't a winning chance. How a winner can be rated lower than a maiden is lunacy. You could learn something from the gallops there. The system is also very confusing to the public, but no one seems to care about that. You certainly need to allow horses to be competitive as you need decent size fields to encourage betting and to keep owners in the game, but this shouldn't be at the expense of a suitable and sensible class structure that encourages horses to flow through the grades.

  17. I would suggest that with the right trainer it does look capable of winning an Auckland Cup.

  18. I imagine most of the clubs will leave their tracks, sponsors and supporters, to the trots and not bother moving elsewhere: much like Nelson and Westport. I find it hard to believe Blenheim will bother racing at Riccarton. Not all clubs have the luxury of the often quoted Feilding of being able to sell their track for millions and move ten minutes down the road to Awapuni. In some cases it will provide a vacuum that should be filled by the trots if they are on the ball.

  19. On Bigtime Willow's profile page on GRNZ, her trial from the 15th of February is listed twice. The first time, the winners time is given as 17.72, the second time as 17.42. The winner of the trial was Bigtime Wendle, on her page it's listed as 17.42. The runner up was Blazin' Carter, on his page it's listed twice, the first time as 17.45 and the second with no time given. If it was really 17.42 or so, Willow would've run around 17.75 and should be $1.50 favourite for the c1 today (as she is). If it was 17.72, she hasn't broken 18 and shouldn't be fave. I guess the fact that the market has her $1.50 means that 17.42 is the correct time, but I shouldn't really NEED to guess. I might just take the 3&4 quinella instead. Depending on the trial time, Willow either blows past Light Cruiser or struggles to get past her.

  20. It will be a sad day when discretion is removed. These handicappers are getting right royally fucked over by trainers who are too ignorant or selfish to embrace the system. What we have now is the furtherest thing from a rating system and it's in no way the fault of the handicappers. The handicapping sub committee (on which Morris and Smith have little to no power), under the recommendation of the horseman's association, have ruined the system. As an example, just one that picked off the top of my head right now. Without discretion applied in recent months, The Night Hawk would currently be rated 89. He's an 80. Mach Shard is a rating 90. You tell me.

    THE STING

Scooby just thought I would tell a story to lighten things up and give everyone a laugh. Lets go back to 1976 or 77 we were at local races in Rotorua and a young jockey was just starting his racing life Simon Royal was on one of the favourites who was expected to win .We all punted it .But Simon missed the jump and the horse flew home for forth. As he was returning to the bird cage we let loose with really intelligent comments like "try starting with the rest of the horses " and when the gates ...open its a good idea to go haha" . His father Des a good friend and an absolute gentleman was upset by this and told us in no uncertain terms.Moving on about a month we were walking into our local pub at 11in the morning as we were the bookies in our local .We thought there seemed to be a lot more people in there and I said to my partner in crime we will be in for a big day the first from Wellington was coming up and a few bets started coming in for a first starter called Sly Glance then some more bets 10ew and so they kept on /Trying to figure out what was happening as no jockey was list on the horse.I said to me mate at least the bets aren"t that big well in came 20ews and then 50ews still scrambling to find who the jockey was then just before start two 100ews Sly Glance was a speed machine and never looked like losing a perfect ride by you guest it Simon Royal. We were on our hands and knees and were paying out every man and his dog I think it was about 6 or 7 thousand as SG paid $20 we tried to get it all paid so we could fight back for the rest of the day.The bar went quiet and in walked Des straight over to us an said gotcha never disrespect my family . The bar let out cheer and a lesson to a couple of bookies . Simon went on to become an excellent jockey and who we followed after that.Well thats all I can remember on that story

    Thanks Scooby

I would like to thank Leigh, and the sponsors, of the trip to Fiji. The whole trip was amazing. The resort is very peaceful and relaxing. We had a deluxe seaside Bure with a beautiful view of the ocean. The staff at the resort and very friendly and will do anything for you.The whole atmosphere at the resort is to relax and chill. They have activities to do if you want to.It was great being there when the Honk Hong sevens were on as they were showing them in the bar area.I sat with the locals when the qualifying games were on.On the next day when the quarter finals were on ,I had a call in my room to tell me they were about to start. They even had a seat saved for me right in front of the tv.They were very vocal when Fiji won.The food was very nice also.I can honestly recommend Crusoes Resort as a very nice place to stay.Leigh had everything organised very well.If anyone wants to know any thing more about the resort, just pm me and I will try and help. Thanks again Leigh for the awesome prize.

  28. It's not just driving it's about training for stable work track driving etc.not necessarily for the young aspiring drivers.it would help employers if they can access at least partly trained staff.
