  2. I actually doubt Sir Woolf Fisher was even alive when Desert Sun stood at Ra Ora Stud. I owned a share in Famous Star around that time and Sir Woolf certainly wasn’t alive then. I also bred to Nassipour in partnership with Ra Ora. I supplied the mare, they supplied the service. Peter Keating did the deal on behalf of Ra Ora and Lady Fisher. I am sure that Sir Woolf was sadly well gone. This is all from my memory. It doesn’t include Sir Woolf past the era of Sovereign Edition or there abouts or have I lost it? Off to bed now as I am getting pretty old. Liz

  3. The closures of Timaru, Motukarara, etc, are dependant upon the allweather being installed at Riccarton to take up the racedates to be shifted, according to Mr Saundry. Given the Shane Jones funding confusion, as well as my own concerns about resource consent for the undertaking within a large city, and close to the airport/flightpath [ standing water ] that is likely to be an ongoing will it/ won't it situation. Personally, I think if Rangiora was re-vamped, all the others could be dispensed with. Two tracks, close to the city, offering very different but complentary facilities.....why the need to spend millions to be spent/wasted when a fraction could do the job? Timaru, notwithstanding the above, is dual-code and also host to a number of trainers of both codes. My own notion [ for what its worth ] is that the one-day a year clubs should be allowed to remain [ with reasonable safety provisions of course] as they do an admirable job, and most are very well patronised. Severely reduce the rest, and upgrade the remaining to give owners and patrons a decent experience - and the horses decent footing.

  4. Janet is the daughter of Lou Fisher I believe, son of Michael Fisher and brother of Woolf Fisher. Lou did work for the company as a Director for a while but also had his own whiteware company until tariffs made it a bad business proposition and then he became a bit of a philanthropist. They were all very much involved with thoroughbred racing with various trusts and I think that Janet looked after the affairs of her fathers Trust. I could be wrong.. but I think I can pretty much post what I like on this thread ..

Farewell old mate, one of the good buggers who was just as comfortable talking to the Queen as a beggar on the street . He did both of those. Well known and respected in both Islands as a champion breeder and trainer who won most of the group races in NZ often more than once with his small team. He was a tireless worker for the Tokoroa club right from it's beginning and leaves a large legacy in the industry. I don't think I was ever with Max more than 5 minutes without both of us having a hearty laugh about something. He helped many within the industry especially newcomers RIP Max

  10. CBT may well be correct that Mrs Fisher was offered a share in Sunline but never in the scenario presented. That was my point, Sunline was never purchased through the sales ring. Abridged: " One spring afternoon in 1997 and turned to his pile of unanswered correspondence : faxes, letters, and telephone messages. One from two small breeders who were trying to lease a horse out, a filly by an unproven stallion in Desert Sun. One part of the message that grabbed his attention was that the filly was a close relation to Interval. They had purchased ample horses at the yearling sales only a few months before at the yearling sales and were still looking for owners for them. We've got more horses than you could poke s stick at and we definitely don't need that one. Trevor balled up the piece of paper and threw it in the bin. A week later Stephen saw a follow up message and asked Trevor about it. Trevor said yeah we got one last week about it. Did you call them back and speak to them asked Stephen. "No, we have enough horses and people should know that." A day or two after this the filly's breeders phoned and spoke to Trevor. Their persistence was admirable although Trevor might have used another word to describe it. Trevor liked to do things at his own pace and he decided to go and see Desert Sun and was impressed with him. When the breeders rang Trevor for the third time he said "Send the horse up and we'll take a look at her." Soon after this Tim Welsh* rang Trevor to say that he had just finished breaking the Desert Sun filly and that she was coming up to them. (*Tim Welsh does my farrier work at home here) He added that she was still a bit hard to handle. They told Tim to leave her to give her more time and leave her there a bit longer. The last thing they needed was another difficult horse, a horse they had no room for in the first place. In the end they decided to take her in and then decide whether to keep her or not. Long story short they decided to keep her and lease her out with a right of purchase of $40,000.00. They were still trying to find owners of the horses that they had bought at the sales and now had the responsibility of looking for owners to lease the new Desert Sun filly. The filly was a relation of Interval. That gave them the inclination to ring up Interval's former owners Helen Lusty and Thane Green and offer them a share in the horse. Both Helen and Thane accepted and the partnership was formed.

Were you in ChCh last night Chris ?

  15. A while back I met a guy at The Mean Fiddler western Sydney in the TAB area.Said he was Syd Brown.Looked the right age. Knew everything about the good horses Triton,Daryl's Joy,Woodcourt Inn etc. Talked to him for quite a while. He was quite outspoken about fellow trainers including Bart.I went away thinking gee good to catch up with a legend of the turf. A couple of years later I was at Hawkesbury races and Syd Brown had a runner.I thought I would go and see him.He was there with his wife but he wasn't anything like the geezer I talked to at the Fiddler.I told him about the fraudster and him and his wife both had a fair idea who the guy was.We had a bit of a laugh about it. Just saying.........

  23. Anyone wondering if the NZGRA had the power to intervene earlier in the current issue concerning the future of our industry should take note of this information sent to one of my friends way back when the CD issue was just beginning, and signed by Greg Kerr. ( I have been given permission from the recipient to reproduce this). ""It is the decision of the NZGRA integrity unit that following the incident at Addington raceway on Friday 25th November 2016 that under the rules of greyhound racing you are warned off. As a warned off person you will not be permitted to enter or remain on any premise where a greyhound meeting or trial is being held. The warning off is effective from Wednesday 5th December 2016 and will remain in place until the JCA make a decision regarding the charges that the RIU have laid under the rules of greyhound racing" Greg Kerr "

Sunline never went through the sales to be purchased by Trevor McKee and that is a fact. One fact is that Trevor didn't want to even train her and only relented in taking the filly after some hassling. 26. One thing that has struck me is the [ apparent ] disconnect between NZTR and whatever may follow from the Messara report - if anything. Many of these clubs should be 'fighting' on two fronts, but don't realise this. Confusion has to play a part. Some will have put in a submission to the DIA wrt to Messara's recommendations, I'm picking that a lot of those will be thinking that that was all that was required...but NZTR had their own agenda for submissions too.

    THE STING

Scooby just thought I would tell a story to lighten things up and give everyone a laugh. Lets go back to 1976 or 77 we were at local races in Rotorua and a young jockey was just starting his racing life Simon Royal was on one of the favourites who was expected to win .We all punted it .But Simon missed the jump and the horse flew home for forth. As he was returning to the bird cage we let loose with really intelligent comments like "try starting with the rest of the horses " and when the gates ...open its a good idea to go haha" . His father Des a good friend and an absolute gentleman was upset by this and told us in no uncertain terms.Moving on about a month we were walking into our local pub at 11in the morning as we were the bookies in our local .We thought there seemed to be a lot more people in there and I said to my partner in crime we will be in for a big day the first from Wellington was coming up and a few bets started coming in for a first starter called Sly Glance then some more bets 10ew and so they kept on /Trying to figure out what was happening as no jockey was list on the horse.I said to me mate at least the bets aren"t that big well in came 20ews and then 50ews still scrambling to find who the jockey was then just before start two 100ews Sly Glance was a speed machine and never looked like losing a perfect ride by you guest it Simon Royal. We were on our hands and knees and were paying out every man and his dog I think it was about 6 or 7 thousand as SG paid $20 we tried to get it all paid so we could fight back for the rest of the day.The bar went quiet and in walked Des straight over to us an said gotcha never disrespect my family . The bar let out cheer and a lesson to a couple of bookies . Simon went on to become an excellent jockey and who we followed after that.Well thats all I can remember on that story

  30. After the epic thread today I thought I’d lighten the mood up a bit and tell you of a personal experience I had many years ago when I used to live in Auckland. My best friend Andrew and I were in Queen Street when we came across the Navy with these free Sky City passes. Sky City had just been built and it was the official opening that night for VIPs only. Andrew and I were given a Sky City lanyard each from a couple of the Navy boys and we went back to his house to get changed as it was a formal event (black tie unbeknown to us). Andrew put his suit on and I borrowed a suit off his father then we trundled back into the city with our Sky City lanyards feeling very excited that we were going to sneak into this event uninvited. Anyway we both took the escalator up to the official entrance and to our dismay we were told that the passes were not valid for the main VIP event that night (the casino was not due to open up to the public until the next day) and we were sent away packing back down the escalators. Feeling very dejected we were walking out back onto the street when we came across the band who would be playing there that night. Anyway we got talking and one of the band members said he would come down the lift to the basement in the carpark and meet us down there to let us in. It was a long shot and anyway we went down to the basement waiting outside the lift not having much hope we would see the band member who had walked in the main entrance up the escalators with his band. Several minutes passed and we were feeling pretty flat staring at the motionless lift then all of a suddden the doors opened and the band member we met outside said jump in! We couldn’t believe it! The excitement returned and we both looked at each other feeling like we had won lotto. The doors opened and EVERYONE was wearing black tie formalwear except us who had our suits and ties on. Ha ha. EVERYONE was a celebrity there EXCEPT US ha ha but we didn’t care. I headed to the bathroom to take a piss and I had the current All Black captain at the time Sean Fitzpatrick on one side of me and double Olympic gold medalist Danyon Loader on the other and they were both thinking he is this person!! Ha ha. I then headed out onto the gaming floor and had a brief chat with the Education minister at the time Lockwood Smith before moving on to Paul Holmes. It was crazy! Andrew and I then spent the rest of the night playing blackjack with Russell, Martin and Jeff Crowe all giving us strange looks in our ties thinking who are these boys! Ha ha. One of the best days of my life and one I’ll never forget.

  31. To be fair I have never seen P4P doing much name dropping. If you are involved in the industry you obviously know many people in the industry. I know more than most, but who cares, everyone is equal, everyone has their opinions and thoughts. People are interesting for what they think themselves, not for who they happen to know because they went to school with someone.

I was at the Lime bar in Ponsonby once many years ago and there were a few Black Caps there including Lou Vincent, Darryl Tuffy and Chris Cairns. This woman came up to me saying how are you going Daniel then Lou Vincent chimed in saying Daniel’s having a better night now that you’re here. She thought I was Daniel Vettori ha ha and the Black Caps were playing along. She was plastered so was easily convinced I was him. We all had a good laugh about it and ended up being a fun night.

Of course I'm taking the piss. Suffered years of P4P's rubbishing of the ability of UK stayers that you've got to strike when you can. Nice win short stuff although he needed to run away from them to show he's top class. Igraine couldn't win a listed race in Germany. Scary how far we are drifting. Avantage looks everything here and over in Aussie, she looks as though she needs 1600m to get near the top. That was a million dollar race but the big boys weren't there. Probabeel looks one paced and also her only chance would be over 1600m but I fear that once she got there, there would be a couple too good for her. She looked like a freak here. Good race Dancedancedance first up in Aussieland but shows you how good Winx is. Sydney Cup winner Shraaoh another slow UK stayer who was only rated 101 at best. By a champion stallion (miles better than Frankel) he simply showed the depth of good horses in the UK. Vongieur Masque rated 104 after finishing 11 off them in the UK St Ledger, Glory Days (3rd) won the Auckland Cup and rated 105 so whoever is doing the rating is doing their job. So Rondinella beaten 3 1/2 (rated 104) by Melody Belle at Elerslie. Melody Belle rated 105 in that race. Dancedancedance beaten a neck. Dancedancedance runs a 103 against Avilius (form franked by He's Eminent in Europe) so our best in NZ (Melody Belle is probably going to get the gong) is 105.!! So here's our problem....NZ form is now being franked by Australian form which is being franked by UK/ European form and the formline is running consistently and to pattern. If all of this stacks up then within 5 years we will loose 6 group one races in NZ. Just do the maths. Group one status are for races generally rated better than 114. In 5 years time, 14-18% less horses racing here. Italy lost their last group one this year.....no group ones in Italy because they were getting group one winners being rated 108!!! Similar ring to this tune.
