    Farewell to the Queen......

When Black Caviar retired in 2013 I never thought I’d see one better then along came Winx. After getting towelled up early on in her career by First Seal who could imagine the horse that she would become?! My favourite memory of her will be seeing how she keeps her head carriage so balanced when she knuckles down. You can see a switch flick in her brain and that undeniable determination is impenetrable to the other mere mortals. I’ll be interested to hear what Darren Flindell has orchestrated once she crosses the finish line one final time. Farewell to the Queen. Thanks for the memories. I will savour every second of today and will cherish the experience forever.

    Vale Trevor McKee.....

For those of you that couldn't go.There was many hundred people and maybe a thousand, that came from far and wide. Many of those faces you have seen on TV. Trainers, Owners and Jockeys. The latter included Peter Johnson and daughter Daniielle (TJ's god-daughter) David Peake and notably Greg Childs made a pilgrimage there. The brilliant George Simon officiated and people close to Trevor came forward and spoke. There was music and laughter and a some held back tears. George ended the service with a beautiful "Waiata" We left proud that we knew a great man!

  3. Today we lost one of the good guys with the passing of RJ Dick Bothwell, who died peacefully surrounded by friends and family. I was proud to call him a friend, one of best trainers or horsemen I ever worked for, he taught me so much about riding ,training and later owning horses. I never saw him in the 30 odd years I knew him ever lose his temper in any situation. Most of the success I had as an owner was with the Bothwell stable training some of my best horses to win many group races... which we always celebrated long into the night the way it should be done. Dick was never one to chase owners he always let the results on the track speak for themselves, and over the years he had many top horses go through his care. Dick was supported throughout 49 years of married his life by his loving wife, my second Mum...Jill, Jilly, or Mummy depending on who you were but one thing was always for sure in the Bothwell house, you were welcome, the food was always fantastic, and we all would enjoy a drink or two to celebrate our many winners together. Jilly was his rock and was behind him in everything he ever did. Dick is survived by Jill and their three children Bones, Burt and Dale and two grandchildren. I will never forget what you or your family did for me and the many memories you gave me over the years,RIP my friend, go join the other great trainers in the sky...till we meet again someday...Leigh

    ATC Update

As a Waikato owner and Cambridge club member, I think aspects of the above letter are great for NI racing. The lower rated horses should be racing at Cambridge and now there's a better incentive to win as that means the horse becomes eligible to race for bigger bikkies up the road. Previously a win was a mixed blessing because not great stake for the hcp gained.

Could not agree with you more. I spoke directly with Brian who stated he would be happy to come back if a place became available, but he wasn't interested in pushing anyone out. He also was very supportive of Rosso. We'll just have to wait for now. Hopefully, an opportunity arises in the near future. A great commentator who is very much missed.

Really sad news to hear of Trevor's passing at the age of 81 after a long illness. A real gentleman. What a career....from Proud Chief to Sunline and everything in between. Condolences to Noeline and Stephen and family. RIP.

GOM - I'm playing Devil's Advocate here. As wek know there is always two sides to a story and I am not siding on either. It's been poorly handled from the very start by all parties and the time it has taken to lay charges suggests that there may be something questionable or that the case wasn't as strong as they'd like. 24. VALE DICK BOTHWELL (By John Jenkins) Dick Bothwell, one of the true gentlemen of New Zealand thoroughbred racing, died yesterday aged 72. Bothwell, who always had a beaming smile and loved to socialise with his peers, trained from his Stratford base for more than 40 years before handing the reins over to his son Chris in August 2017. He was one of the most respected trainers during the 1980s and 1990s when he achieved an amazing winning strike-rate with a small team. He prepared some special horses in his time but rated two above all others, the outstanding filly Summer Haze and Silver Chalice. Summer Haze raced in the early 1980s and had 40 starts for 13 wins, nine seconds and five thirds and amassed more than $136,000, which was a respectable sum in those days. She won the 1980 Group 1 Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) as well as the Wellington Stakes (1600m) and Manawatu Breeders’ Stakes the following year and finished second behind Glamour Bay in the 1981 Group 1 New Zealand Oaks (2400m). Silver Chalice had 47 starts for eight wins, 10 seconds and six thirds and amassed more than $400,000 in stakes. She had five starts as a two-year-old for two wins, a second, a third and a fifth but then seemed to get even better with age. She took out the Group 1 Thorndon Mile (1600m) at Trentham in January 1995 and then went on to win the Group 3 Kings Plate (1600m) at Ellerslie, Group 3 Trentham Stakes (2400m) at Trentham and Group 2 Hawke’s Bay Cup (2200m) in 1996. “I’d have loved to have taken Summer Haze to Australia for some of the two-year-old races because I think she would have been really competitive,” Bothwell once said. “She showed blistering speed as a two-year-old and then almost won a New Zealand Oaks as a three-year-old. What a horse she was and Silver Chalice was just a very talented horse,” enthused the trainer. Dick Bothwell seemed to have an affinity with fillies as two other top performers he trained were Love To Dance and Moralee. Both horses were part-owned by Auckland-based Leigh McKenzie, who said today Dick Bothwell was not only a great trainer but also a personal friend who was respected by everyone in the racing industry. “I knew him for a long time and never heard a bad word said about him,” McKenzie said. Love To Dance recorded three wins and two seconds from only 10 New Zealand starts before she was transferred to Australia. She took out both the Group 3 Wakefield Stakes (1200m) at Trentham and Group 1 Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) in 1996.Moralee’s four wins included the Group 2 Sir Tristram Classic (2000m) at Te Rapa and the Group 3 Wellington Stakes (1600m). Bothwell trained in partnership with his son Chris for a number of years and produced another good mare in Dancing Jess to win seven races including the Group 3 Taranaki Breeders Stakes (1400m) and Listed Rangitikei Gold Cup (1600m). The daughter of Danske was also runner-up in both the Group 2 Cal Isuzu Stakes (1600m) and Group 2 Travis Stakes (2000m) at Te Rapa. When asked about his disappointments in the game Bothwell cited the tragic ending of the very talented Partee as one, the mare having to be put down after breaking down in a race. Partee also won seven races from only 18 starts, with her biggest victories being in the Listed Matamata Cup (1600m) and the St Leger Trial (2100m) at Otaki. She also finished a close third, beaten a head and a neck, in the 2005 running of the Group 2 Waikato Cup (2400m). “She could have been anything and had really untapped ability,” said Dick “She was a very talented stayer in the making. Dick Bothwell also had a very distinguished career working on studs in his early days, employed first at Middle Park and then Waikato Stud. “I had the pleasure of being involved with some great stallions like Decies (sire of the mighty Dulcify) and Battle Wagon and they were both very good stallions,” he said. Dick Bothwell also liked to point out that he was the trainer of the first winner under lights in Australasia at Avondale many years ago, something a lot of people didn’t know. Bothwell rated Greg Childs as the best jockey he had a seen in his time as a trainer, a very talented rider who rose to the top of the jockey ranks in Australia and went on to become the regular rider of champion mare Sunline. Dick Bothwell’s last runner when training in partnership with his son Chris was Gordy's Gesture who finished a very unlucky fifth over 1800m at New Plymouth in July 2017. Dick Bothwell is survived by his wife Jilly, his three children Chris, Richard and Dale and two grandchildren.

  29. Sorry to burst the “I’m withholding judgment until proven guilty” bubble but this owner would of been well aware of the goings on in that kennel. We are talking about a couple of massive punters here, $10k + bets, these are bets that they share investment and return in, god forbid what other goings on happen to “limit liability” of such bets. I can remember many years ago, 12+ at a guess, it was not long after Craig started showing interest in greyhound racing, I was invited to a race meeting for a big group race night, the table I was at was next to him and his group of “hangers on” and the trainer under investigation. I distinctly remember one of that group returning to the table and telling the “followers” about what he had just witnessed in the trainers car park involving “exciting and enticing” their dog just prior to it being kennelled. It became clear to me that this practice was obviously frowned upon due to hearing the guy saying “sh@t don’t say a word about that”. There 2 peas in a pod, brothers to different mothers, sworn to oath amongst themselves and undeniably loyal to each other, but what will be most remember able of all in years to come will be how between them they completely totalled the greyhound racing industry in NZ.

    The Crusaders

Spot on Ted. This thing has been hijacked by those with specific agendas and helped in no small measure by our hand wringing PM. The Crusaders franchise has been around since the 90's, and undoubtedly is the most successful in NZ Rugby history. You have to ask where all these do gooders have been until now ? And the NZRFU, having bathed in the glow of Crusaders success for years, and using them at every opportunity to promote the game, suddenly become hypocrites and because of the actions of one lunatic Australian, declare the franchise poison and must be done away with...??! And have you seen some of the suggested new names.....Canterbury Planes...?? Oaks??!! They must be kidding. PC bullshit plain and simple.....fueled by almost every sycophantic radio host or reporter......

  32. On the face of it this is a complete joke BUT some thing that hasn't been discussed by anyone and could be the real reason for a name change , Security when travelling abroad . Imagine what could happen after the recent tragic events when the Crusaders pass threw a Muslim country's airport or play anywhere internationally , headlines the CRUSADERS ARE HERE , perhaps the name will make them targets for cindys new found friends , they are not all nice people . The Crusaders and New Zealand Rugby have made it clear that the combination of the name, logo and sword-weilding horseman was no longer tenable and that the latter would be dropped for the remainder of the 2019 season.

    Mares Races

8 of the Mares in the Matchmaker series being run at Yonkers presently are former Nz ers. If we catered for 4 year old plus mares here most of those would still be racing in NZ. Instead the owners are forced to sell because the people programming races here won’t cater for them adequately. As a consequence they are lost to our breeding industry. Is it time to take programming off clubs and centralise it with a national committee of breeders, trainers and owners involved, that can oversee complimentary programming nationwide and inject some common sense into the system?

  35. 9 years to deal with the GFC and the Christchurch quake , can you imagine how this lot would cope if those issues returned . This is the most incompetent govt this country has ever seem . Failure after failure , housing , homeless , a doubling of food parcels , cancellation of roading projects , cancellation of rail projects , funding issues with hospitals , funding issues with cancer treatment potential corruption with NZF , the list is growing at an alarming rate , then we have the capitol gains tax , it goes from bad to worse . Seriously , cindy is hopeless and her team is out of their depth .
