  1. LightsOut

    This TAB website...

is that slow to operate it's no surprise what Organisation it belongs to. Still no race stakes listed for each race but unbelievably on the results page it tells you. I want to know the stake amount prior to the result not after. You couldn't make this outfit up as to how incompetent and clueless they are. Industry is going backwards and this outfit wants to speed that up %^&* me. Found an overseas site that is quicker and has the basic info punters want so bye bye NZ TAB you have finally lost me. I stuck with them as own interests in a couple of horses but enough is enough. Just a hopeless unmotivated and uneducated organisation.

  2. I couldn’t agree more. How their performances over the last 5 years can be supported by anyone is totally beyond me. The success or failure of any business is measured in it’s profitability and balance sheet. Look at theirs and the flow on effect which Is in free fall for all participants.

    Update April. John Allen

He is so full of shit. On $660K+ a year, been there five years and achieved absolutely nothing, spent $50m+ that the industry doesn't have on the worst betting platform you could imagine. And as for blaming the absence of Race Fields Legislation for falling turner is spin that Mitch McConnell would be proud of. Time to put the shot putter and return Postman Pat to sender, the board that appointed these clowns should be ashamed to show their faces in public.

  4. Does it matter ' how much' ? that fact is that he did...which is more than most pollies of any persuasion. And for the record, I am not a partisan Nat voter...not at all...but I fail to see what it has to do with anyone what a retired Minister - of anything - does with their money?

  5. Had a close look at UMC. Has a real nice action and at times looks like he glides across the track, like the real good ones sometimes display. Definitely heading for open class, nothing surer, if he keeps sound. Would love to see him in the Cup!

  7. Personally I’d rather see the natural surfaces and facilities upgraded at the city clubs and keep our country clubs as a feeder system for both horses and general interest . At the end of the day selling a country club would probably only yield the resources to cover some unknown consultants fees . Which would be a complete waste of money and history.

I can't help either, no one seems to want to discuss it. Given the time taken to do anything around the place, it will be years before it is taken down...not a quick fix for sure but tje soonest started, the more quickly finished.

    $2000 Import Fee

The more I think about it the more I can see this as only being a retrograde step. As Emotive rightly points out when the number of imports drops (I suspect it has already started - given the shortage of dogs in Australia at present) then NZ dogs will be required to be bred to fill the numbers. There will be no tarriff to reduce the GAP costs to rehome those dogs and GRNZ will have to rely solely on industry money to offset the cost. The cost of getting imports is already prohibitive enough (around $3000 per dog for airfare, customs charges and import/registration fee before it even lands here) so no-one is importing really poor quality any longer. To breed a litter of pups will cost no less than $3,000 per pup to get it to the track with absolutely no guarantee that it will make the track let alone the grade. That's even more prohibitive for the average participant. Enter the bigger NZ owner/breeders who will take up the slack get even bigger empires and dump even more poor quality dogs onto the smaller trainers.

  12. Its great to see a southland horse win so impressively, and also to see mr Kilkelly as the owner. Having said that,In my opinion some are getting carried away. The horse has been described by connections as a day to day proposition, with tendon trouble apparently twice ending previous preparations. It is trained on the beach, and conditions should have suited the other night, and it got the perfect run. I hope it stays sound so it has the chance to fulfill its potential, however I think it has a way to go to be described as the next big thing.

  14. I have had an experience recently that has shown me just how incompetent and arrogant our TAB really is. For various reasons I haven't used my NZ TAB account for six or seven weeks. A few weeks ago on a Sunday I received an email and text saying I had a free $10 bet, but I had to use it that day. I had previously had bonus $5 bets to try and encourage me to bet midweek, as I'm sure many of you have. I duly used the $10 on a horse that ran 4th. All good, I had backed losers before. It was a week or so later when I went on line to check some rugby odds that I noticed my account was $10 light. So I emailed the help desk to mention this and got told they had no record of giving me $10 and I had used my own money, and anyhow there is some new convoluted system to activate bonus bets these days. Basically I was just told to fck off. I did mention I wasn't pleased but heard no more from them. Some two weeks after that exchange I get another offer of a free $10 with four days to use it this time. So I contacted them again to ask if what happened last time is going to happen again this time. I get a response showing zero interest in my last experience and pointing out the new way to look for a bonus bet voucher. Following their instructions I check and there is no hint anywhere in my account of a bonus $10. So basically they are trying to entice me to waste $10 of my own money again. That is virtually fraudulent. I contrast this with my bank. Last year I was getting mucked around by the person I was dealing with so fired off two emails of complaint to two different people. They both got back to me virtually instantly and couldn't do enough to rectify the situation, giving me more than I wanted. Impeccable customer service. In contrast, the TAB's approach is to ignore me totally and basically say fck off. It is worth mentioning that I have probably had that account for close to 30 years, with other accounts before that, and used it virtually every week except when I have been in Australia or France. By a very rough estimate I have probably spent over $1.5m over the years on course, in TABs and through my accounts. Say what you like about banks, but they rate 10/10 for customer service in many respects. In contrast the TAB rates whatever comes below 0/10. I think the absolute arrogance and incompetence that permeates the TAB is indicative of what is happening to the industry as a whole. I think it shows what happens when industries such as Racing are totally run by people with zero interest in the industry. We are seeing that rapidly come to fruition. I have told them my account won't be used again until they resolve this, but when you are on $200,000 a year until the industry collapses it is clear to see they don't give a stuff.

Does anyone have any idea what is happening to the public grandstand at Riccarton. I see it is still there. Only seven months to the next Cup Week: the last one was a fiasco. I did check their website, but no mention of it whatsoever. I can remember the days when the top deck was jam packed for the Grand National: obviously not this year.

    $2000 Import Fee

My main point here and as a example which is fact.....one of my owners bred a litter payed to get it reared .broken in at a cost of 30k to 2yrs of age...not one has won a race and 2 have been rehomed through gap with the rest being put on gap list now......before they had imported 3 dogs at a cost off 15k which of none have gone to gap ...so now they have just imported another one at a cost of 6k so they can still enjoy racing dogs.....they have tryed to buy a nz dog but the quality offered is not there all they are getting is cast offs for 6k.....i believe it should be there right to a equal playing field and have the choice....if you want to put a fee on imports do it when they go to gap and then we know were the money has gone........and the bitch breed from won 3 group races over the middle distance...

In the last annual report it was still tied up with the insurers causing difficulties, so am assuming this is still the case as no update has been sent to members as far as I am aware. Real shame, as there were a lot of upset people after last years cup week who probably wont be back anytime soon. Cant say I blame them, as I am a member, and I wont be going back to the second Saturday after last years issues, pretty ridiculous when as a member I cant even get into the members stand to watch a race or buy a drink due to overcrowding.

  20. I'm thinking - as well as the above comments - that once the MAC report is appropriately digested by both Cabinet and the DIA there will be a clearer idea of what - if anything - might happen. Given the fact that many rural areas are served by Nat M.P's, aas well as the general dislike for W.P in the House, traction of any sort is certainly no given. As for allweathers? I am not aware that Shane Jones's lolly scramble has been received, or is likley to be....which leaves THAT topic unfinished. WRT Riccarton, as well as the huge expense, there is the matter of resource consent for water storage/runoff for such an undertaking within a large city, in close proximity to housing - and the airport flight path. Personally, I hope it doesnt go ahead, regardless of what may transpire in other areas.

  21. The ever so wonderful Mr True Gentleman of Racing Trevor's Celebration of life/ funeral is to be held on Thursday 11 April 2019 at 1pm, Ellerslie racecourse, Ellerslie, Auckland. Would it be fitting to wear at least one of the Mckee family stable colours? We are sure it'll be a day where many colourful stories are shared. Trevor, one is still kicking oneself for not taking up the offer to have shares in Pay My Bail, a horse we both shared fun memories with from the moment you purchased it to it's racing career. Other horses folk will recall include Ebony Honor, Interval, and sorry but can't recall without looking them up horses that raced in both NZ and across the ditch in Australia. Does anyone recall which other horses he rode or trained in Australia, besides Sunline ? Ahh, how many of you have a photograph alongside Trevor, Sticko, Claire Bird and Sunline in stable stall on raceday? Treasure them because I sure will. Other things of note to remember Trevor for include his diet of peas, the incredible promotions with Sunline including caps and posters and featuring on NZ Post Stamps just like Horlicks did. Will always treasure his hugs & cheeky kisses!! As a gesture to Trevor, it would be great if all racecourses he had horses race at to plant a tree or flowers, in fact, some racecourses including Ellerslie really must do something about there gardens and remember they were also set up for Memorial Gardens of those who contributed to racing and a place for peace and reflection for all people. Rest in Peace Dearest Trevor, you will live on in our hearts for the positive contributions you have made to our lives x

  28. Won today at Rangiora but did gallop in the two false starts.Lucky he did not interfere with anything. In my opinion there should only be a front line for early 2yo trotters and have a babies day every 2-3 weeks to help ringcraft and to help spread stake money to owners. Not cheap to get a horse up at this age.

  29. Ok ,glass half empty folks, a 5 year old with tendon trouble , easy to write off any chance of stardom. and only 3 lifetime starts .stupid I know but........... look at those starts 17 lengths winning margins in total. drivers never used whip , good fields . 1.52 1.55 .1,57 mrs. even CC didnot win 1st 3 starts. looks the part and 3 races in4 weeks the legs must be reasonable I would have thought.. I for 1 hope The Sprat is proved correct ,and UMC can become an unlikely star. How many wins in a row does he need to get everyone on board ?

    Update April. John Allen

John Allen should stand for parliament next year. His spin is uplifting..... "Reported net profit for the first half of 2018/19 was $76.2 million, $2.8 million or 3.5% down on last year, a result impacted by the absence of anticipated Racefield’s legislation" Help me understand how a downwards trending result can be a factor of something that wasn't there last year and aint there this year either?? Income from racing plummeted by $8m for this 6 months on the same period last year however sports betting and pokies smoothed some of that chasm. The half yearly report has an Ariadne feeling with Bruce Judge at the helm.... NZRB's Equity at 2017 $69.3m NZRB's Equity at 2018 $53.5m NZRB's Equity at Jan 2019 $38.2m Fear not, as although borrowings from the bank have lifted from $10m mid 2018 to $25m at January 2019, the NZRB's liquidity is as good as gold. "At balance date, NZRB had available (undrawn) $10 million under its rolling credit bank facility" - how reassuring.

    NZTR Appointment

Shows how little you know about Race Club Administration. The Club Board lays down the Strategy and the CEO executes it. ARC could teach a few other Clubs a lesson or two, despite a few hiccups along the way. Hardly fair to point the finger at Mr George! Your “anti-Aussie” sentiment says it all. It’s a pity NZ Racing isn’t anywhere near the shape that Aust Racing is. Roll on The Championships!

I used to ride Centaur off the track when my father trained it at New Plymouth. Had plenty speed actually led up a star studded Wellington Stakes field to the furlong. After winning at New Plymouth was sold to Nelson to the father of NZ cricket wicket keeper at the time. Anyway the win at Nelson wasn't all that straight forward. The club judicial man who relegated Centaur was found to have a decent bet on the second horse hence the reinstatement. Met John a few times at the races.

  44. Not supporting the idea of not being able to open in an account in a branch but I wouldnt have thought many people are not opening them in branches these days, the vast majority would be online. In fact having to go into a branch and verify your id was probably a major deterrent to getting accounts active.

  45. And my TAB manager today told me that you can't open an account there any more. It has to now be done online. Great way to attract new customers ….not!!!

  46. Well I will double down on the TAB's incompetence and arrogance. The other week I was restricted on all betting, even on sports I have never bet on. $6.80 maximum win on some markets and $26.80 max win on others. I emailed the TAB questioning why. The following day I got an email welcoming me to their elite program... ??? (Way down at the beginnings of bronze tier). All I need to do is bet 5x as much and then I can reap all the benefits of silver tier... No initial response as to why I was restricted. Emailed them again and finally got an email back a few days later. " We have restricted your bets based on your recent betting patterns". Funny that when I was stuck over $7k last year they were always emailing me with free bets. Get back into the red and they don't want to know you.

  48. So you can't open an account in store. They are heavily restricting winning players, but don't want leakage. Live betting is useless. A large amount of online sports options are not available in store. You can't even get a rugby straight handicap bet or total points bet in store. Online it is a $1.90/$1.90 market whereas in store it is a "you pick the line" market at $1.90/$1.81 or sometimes as bad $1.90/$1.73. "The TAB, come to our store... we have pokies...". About the only thing that could make it worse would be if they introduced virtual racing.
