  1. So you can't open an account in store. They are heavily restricting winning players, but don't want leakage. Live betting is useless. A large amount of online sports options are not available in store. You can't even get a rugby straight handicap bet or total points bet in store. Online it is a $1.90/$1.90 market whereas in store it is a "you pick the line" market at $1.90/$1.81 or sometimes as bad $1.90/$1.73. "The TAB, come to our store... we have pokies...". About the only thing that could make it worse would be if they introduced virtual racing.

  3. Dead right - Alan Jones had him. I just think he (Northfleet) spent time in the CD, maybe in his latter years. Just looked up what I could on the NZTR site about him, it only shows what I'm assuming is his last 30 starts between 1979 and 1981 and about 28 of them were in the CD. Like I said I thought Cyril had him at one part, in fact I'm sure he did. Unless I've gone totally crazy though I'm positive Noel Eales had him too. I do hope I'm right about the latter as I was apprenticed to "the Boss" (Noel) and I'm sure Northfleet was there, for a while at least. If I've got that wrong (which is very possible!) then I'm definitely at the brain fade age!!

  4. Why is it anyone's business to speculate? There have been many 'private' trainers - both here and elsewhere - over the years, and the remuneration will be worked out to the satisfaction of both parties. I'm all for debate but this [ IMO ] is just being plain nosey.

  7. Ha ha ha - no it wasn't Kismet. A double bridle would have been way too flash for him. He was more the hackamore sort!! Had a grey pony called Ali Baba after Kismet, Ali was way more posh! Also remember Shorty's Dad, pretty sure his name was Bill. He was at the stables most everyday, one thing that always stuck in my mind was he used to eat cold pies. And Cyril Pfefferle was at Richmond in those days too, before he went to Trentham and had the likes of Fountaincourt, and Northfleet too I think (?). Good days and memories

Shad William Leonard had his first start at Riccarton on the 3/3/89. Ridden by JC Baillie he won by 1.25 lengths from Endicott paying $33.90 and $8.80. His second start was at Riccarton on the 29/3/89. He ran fourth to Simba Lland. His third and last NZ start was at Nelson on the 17/4/89 when again ridden by JC Baillie he won from Waffles and Shane McCann and Trudeau and Chris Johnson. He was by Turn The Tide from Zudini a Pronto 2 mare. Raced by John and Mrs KW Baillie who I presume was his jockeys mother.

  9. I have had an experience recently that has shown me just how incompetent and arrogant our TAB really is. For various reasons I haven't used my NZ TAB account for six or seven weeks. A few weeks ago on a Sunday I received an email and text saying I had a free $10 bet, but I had to use it that day. I had previously had bonus $5 bets to try and encourage me to bet midweek, as I'm sure many of you have. I duly used the $10 on a horse that ran 4th. All good, I had backed losers before. It was a week or so later when I went on line to check some rugby odds that I noticed my account was $10 light. So I emailed the help desk to mention this and got told they had no record of giving me $10 and I had used my own money, and anyhow there is some new convoluted system to activate bonus bets these days. Basically I was just told to fck off. I did mention I wasn't pleased but heard no more from them. Some two weeks after that exchange I get another offer of a free $10 with four days to use it this time. So I contacted them again to ask if what happened last time is going to happen again this time. I get a response showing zero interest in my last experience and pointing out the new way to look for a bonus bet voucher. Following their instructions I check and there is no hint anywhere in my account of a bonus $10. So basically they are trying to entice me to waste $10 of my own money again. That is virtually fraudulent. I contrast this with my bank. Last year I was getting mucked around by the person I was dealing with so fired off two emails of complaint to two different people. They both got back to me virtually instantly and couldn't do enough to rectify the situation, giving me more than I wanted. Impeccable customer service. In contrast, the TAB's approach is to ignore me totally and basically say fck off. It is worth mentioning that I have probably had that account for close to 30 years, with other accounts before that, and used it virtually every week except when I have been in Australia or France. By a very rough estimate I have probably spent over $1.5m over the years on course, in TABs and through my accounts. Say what you like about banks, but they rate 10/10 for customer service in many respects. In contrast the TAB rates whatever comes below 0/10. I think the absolute arrogance and incompetence that permeates the TAB is indicative of what is happening to the industry as a whole. I think it shows what happens when industries such as Racing are totally run by people with zero interest in the industry. We are seeing that rapidly come to fruition. I have told them my account won't be used again until they resolve this, but when you are on $200,000 a year until the industry collapses it is clear to see they don't give a stuff.

Chris yes Holy Smoke 2 was by Palestine the sire of the hugely successful Pakistan 2. Kazakstaan was one of the best bred sires ever imported. By the English Derby and St Leger winner Never Say Die out of the English Oaks winner and Champion European Filly in 1959 and 1960 Petite Etoile. Problem was he was very small and never raced and finished up at Balcarres Stud in Matamata.

  11. He's doing a master job , in tandem with Appleby and Suroor doing the international jobs . Their trainers in US and Jap chug out a fair few winners too with Fabre training in France for them.Their resurgence is imho due to number factors . They didn't use to race many geldings , a lot of horses were sold at end 3 year old days or went to John Ferguson who won many jump races with them. He had Francis of Assisi , Polarisation and Qewy over sticks for a while under an offshoot company called Bloomfields before Appleby got them. Some of these types of horses now come to OZ , or bolster older division internationally. Also they were on self imposed embargo buying any Coolmore stock or using their stallions, a policy Coolmore had the other way and they ended up filling the Suroor yard with US bred dirt bred youngsters who weren't much chop on grass , that's changed now so they will get even better. Coolmore bit thin on ground in older division this year and bug last year means they have huge number of 3 year olds yet to see a racecourse with classics coming up fast so might be a while before they get upper hand again on track.

Same headline as used by the Aussie press when the horse Not Again arrived in Australia for a campaign. It was based on the failure of the much vaunted TERRIFIC s failure to perform in Aussie Both were trained by M Ritchie and owned by Dr McGREGOR GRANT a fantastic supporter of the racing game.

  14. Forth placegetter in the Japan Cup was Cheval Grand. You stated above 3 wins from 22 starts. His recorded form is -Cheval Grand 28 starts, 7 wins,6 seconds and 7 thirds. Plus last start second in the Dubai Sheema Classic not included in that form! https://www.jbis.jp/horse/0001152403/ As shown above the Japan Cup is currently rated equal to the Cox Plate.

    TAB to blame?

Its HRNZ who allocate dates for the season to clubs. and the clubs who decide their individual programs. Look at the Princess Tiffany debacle for the back up to my previous comments

    TAB to blame?

Perhaps the other 31 horses just decided not to pay up.

Well said JMc. When I first arrived in Nelson I did what many people do and hunted out the local TAB and bar. Met a group of like minded guys and Shorty was one of them. Had his usual spot and a dry sense of humour. Pretty quiet guy but when he spoke you listened.

    Coprice

For those of you that are using Coprice Working Dog and have any concerns, I have been able to get a statement from Coprice to say where they are at, in regards to the Green Tea in the Working Dog. Hope this helps 29th March 2019 CopRice Working Dog Food CopRice has been using an antioxidant pack in its Working Dog products for the last 6 years. This antioxidant pack is sourced from a reputable supplier and as CopRice understands, it is commonly used in the pet food industry. In February this year, CopRice changed it’s Working Dog packaging, and in the interests of transparency, CopRice chose to show the ingredient breakdown of the antioxidant pack, an element of which is a very low level of green tea extract. CopRice acknowledges that the greyhound industry considers caffeine a banned substance, owing to the fact that it is considered a diuretic and a stimulant. CopRice notes that the level of caffeine in the CopRice Working Dog products is below the recognised threshold and as such, it is unlikely that a Greyhound fed only CopRice working Dog in accordance with the feeding guidelines would return a positive result for Caffeine. CopRice confirms that there has been no change to the recipe or ingredients contained in the Working Dog Product, nor to the recipe or ingredients of theof the antioxidant mix, CopRice also notes that it is not aware of any Greyhound that has returned a positive result for caffeine while being fed CopRice Working Dog. Furthermore, to support this position, CopRice submitted three separate samples of Working Dog to an independent laboratory for testing, none of which showed detectable levels of caffeine. Currently CopRice is working with the Greyhound Racing Integrity Unit who are independently testing CopRice Working Dog food for caffeine and we will share the outcome of these tests when finalised in approximately 2 weeks. If you require any further clarification or information, please do not hesitate to contact your CopRice representative who will put you in touch with our nutrition team. 20. Thank you breeder and ruby I agree with the sentiments of the family. Exquisite Jewel foaled a beauty little brown colt who is going and growing strong. She is my 'dream' mare and that big step to racing. Yes i did look for the family and I hope I have found one in Grand Prospect tracing back on her family. To say I am a little bit excited in his half siblings performance is an understatement. We can only try and try again.

  21. But they are not all no hopers.u don't retire rugby players coz they aren't as quick as they used to be.they just return a grade they are competitive.40 to 50 rating races at the park are often run in 2.41 2.42.cant be hopeless.in te case of rugby players they just go to Japan and earn more money than they did as all blacks.

  22. Why should horses of limited ability not be able to run amongst themselves and prolong their racing careers...seems to make sense...it works in many other parts of the world, and the more owners can keep getting a return the more they will stay involved...JMO.

    Canterbury Starter

Can you imagine this happening when Lamb is starting " MADAME CONNOISTRE - inconvenienced by a front line runner pacing roughly then breaking late in the score up resulting in the mare being badly impeded at the start. The authorisation of payment of dividends was withheld until the mare was declared a non runner under Rule 213(1)(j) as Stewards deemed it not to have received a fair start. The Starter Mr F Phelan was shown the video coverage and spoken to advisedly"
