Why should the smaller trainers run for ribbons. And leave the money to the "professionals"? Can't see the logic in that. As I've said before, we will see our pups through, and then call it a day. We've had 18 fantastic years, with lots of highs. Greys are the most amazing breed of dogs.5 points -

It doesn't matter how much he is making or not. The bottom line is you breed it, raced or not, you make sure they make it though to retirement. The public won't tolerate anything else. Plenty of trainers make sure their dogs are rehomed, raced, unraced, injured or not, yet the powers that be continue to allow a few to breed more dogs per annum than the actual numbers rehomed each year. That I will never agree with.5 points -
We don't have a rating system.
ShiftingGround and one other reacted to what a post for a topic
any rating system in the north island will always attract its critics because you just don't have enough horses, Simple as that. Thus some will always be placed in races where they are at a disadvantage.. And you don't have enough horses because you don't have enough small time owner/trainers. And while declining interest in the sport and the younger generation losing a connection with the horse are obvious factors, another of the reasons for that is many were driven out of the game as they got sick of the previous system which unfairly advantaged the better 2 & 3 year olds by way of penalty free wins. As to the answer. The only way is to have more participants, easily accessible training facilities for everyone and a greater pool of horses. There also needs to be a change of attitude from some. This not having amateur races at Auckland is farcical. In my view it is an area which has potential for greater participation, especially in the owner and trainer side of it, however once again you have to provide them with access to training facilities and horses. The training facility and pool of horses must not be run by partisan interest groups. As an example I was speaking to a bloke the other day who was telling me he had just recently spoken to those who run a once a year south island meeting at their racecourse ,and has been named as for possible closure. He had asked if he could train a couple of horses there. The answer was no,we are not interested in having anyone new train on their track. I had told him he would be wasting his time. And then they go and moan how they recently spent large amounts of money on their track to get there meeting back. groups like that who openly discourage participation exist in many places.2 points -

Questionable and the very next sentence covered that as did an earlier sentence as reposted below. Downside is that there are less grass roots participants earning prizemoney so the likelihood is that some get squeezed out therefore the participant pool is reduced. They have broken no rules but it is questionable whether it is good for the long-term survival of the sport especially in a relatively small country like NZ.2 points -

With all due respect, if that is the case, then why don't you organise a Fun Race day amongst family, friends and other "amateur" greyhound sports enthusiasts and race for ribbons? Animal welfare is a priority and NZGRA must do MUCH better but; Greyhound racing IS a professional sport because winning prize money is earned from competing.2 points -

So True, Rules, Greyhound Racing is a Family sport for fun but most importantly is a sport where the dogs themselves are not treated as just a number and treated as part of the family. The latest huge list Registered by the large trainer is only part of the equation. Where are the others in the litters that wern't fortunate enough to have what it takes to make the dollar train and their siblings that were injured during rearing . Stats show they havn't been rehomed as that part of the industry is just not able to achieve this. I would say at a guess a huge percentage of pups born don't get registered, I wonder if the new look N.Z.G.R.A. is accounting for these , after all you pay a fee to them at birth for them Don't you?2 points -

What nobody has established in Media reports that i have read is the importance of the actual "timing ' of the blood extraction. I would have thought that any trainer would have taken bloods on the night or day after a poor performance and not Monday night or Tuesday morning thus activating 24 hour rule2 points -
ADDINGTON BIRDCAGE STEWARD

I usually don't react to guy's like majestic but when people just don't have their facts right they need to be outed. On the night in question I was wearing a jacket supplied by HRNZ to promote OWNERSHIP. But in saying that my brand awareness must be working because that jacket hasn't got Westview on it. I have however worn my Westview jacket on ocassions well voluntarily working at Addington with the full support of the CEO. All the syndicates me and my wife run have no fees at all and I don't get paid by Addington, Methven, Kids carts or HRNZ for any of the time me and my wife put in so Majestic I suggest you find another target or better still start putting your time into something more productive like promoting the sport we love.2 points -

You would find case law in NZ would beg to differ. Many industries have limits on what they can trade, do, or catch, especially in relation to animal welfare. If a limit was put on the amount of Greyhounds breed, case law would favour the limitations in my opinion, especially when you start questioning how 1800-2500 dogs are bred and imported each year, and only 500 are rehomed on a good year1 point -

The failures continue , flagship policy kiwi build is a failing and going nowhere and it's going to get worse , purchasers backing out when they see what they have bought , the RUNNERS UP wouldn.t take them as well , this dream is turning into a nightmare and is doomed . So we have increased homeless people , luckily summer is approaching and the salvation army food parcels have increased dramaticly , around 27000 more dependent family's since cindy took over , this isn't looking pretty . Five of the 25 total properties at Auckland's 240 Onehunga Mall Development were rejected by the ballot winners, and the runners-up. The properties consisted of two studios and three one bedroom apartments, valued between $380,000 and $500,000. The properties had between five and 14 people on each of their ballots.1 point -

Agreed. Racing is a sport for fun. Not making money. Even the bigger trainers would have massive overheads. I've seen a few bigger trainers bills in Australia. I could only imagine the overheads Cole and McInerney would be paying and there is almost no room for grassroots training at all anymore1 point -

Where is Ardern on this? Nothing is forthcoming from her and this agreement is due to be signed next week. At least National have provided their stance on this horrendous UN Migration Pact. National would pull NZ out of UN migration pact National would pull New Zealand out of the UN’s Global Compact on Migration because of its potential to restrict New Zealand’s ability to set its own migration and foreign policy, National Leader Simon Bridges says. "National is supportive of global action on major issues and of migration into New Zealand because it brings skills, capital and connections and makes New Zealand a better, more diverse place. And we support the ability for New Zealanders to travel and live and work overseas should they choose. “But immigration policy is solely a matter for individual countries and must take account of their individual circumstances – and New Zealand’s policies are already held up as international best practice. There is no automatic right to migrate to another country without that country’s full agreement, a view which the United Nation’s Global Compact on Migration, set to be signed next week, seeks to counter. “While not binding, the Compact could restrict the ability of future governments to set immigration and foreign policy, and to decide on which migrants are welcome and which aren’t. While National is the party most open to immigration, we cannot accept this. “This Government’s own immigration policy is weak and confused, including its unfulfilled campaign promises to slash immigration. Signing up to this only clouds things further – like its working groups the Government appears to be relying on the UN to set its migration policy rather than making its own decisions. “While a number of countries are pulling out of the agreement as the extent of its potential impact on the decision-making of individual countries is realised, our Government is refusing to outline its own position. “For these reasons, National will not be supporting this agreement and we will reverse the decision if this Government signs up to it.”1 point -

It's pretty straight forward , the Chinese are under far more pressure than Trump, he's crusing along and they can see he's not going to budge , what's becoming very clear is Trump has widespread support internationally on this issue but many word leaders haven't got the balls to openly show support for him . Watching a Brit , Lord somebody ? last week explaining very clearly how many country's around the world (EU especially) have had a guts full of Chinese business tactics and copy wright theft , it would be nice to see some of them come out and show solidarity with Trump , they won't , he's doing all of them a favour and probably us as well .1 point -
