Race or Sell
Iraklis and 2 others reacted to Thejanitor for a topic
It's got nothing to with being "tough" or that the Dunns are not great trainers. I did not say that. What i said was Captain Dolmio, in my mind, performed better when he was trained by Matt Brinsdon at Gore. The horse came to Addington a number of times with Brinsdon as trainer and always performed well regardless of how tough the grade was. The horse has not been the same since being based in Canterbury in my opinion.3 points -
I don't want the cup to become a mobile start or the race will be in danger of becoming just another race, as the Auckland Cup did as a mobile 2600m race. But you are right Thejanitor, Mulcay and Ron Carter before him did not have the trouble this starter has because once a horse played up more than once it was sent to the outside before the rest of the field became unsettled. Also I think in fairness to Lamb trainers were better at getting a horse to stand properly. The horses and drivers though have to now work out whether it is a stand or a walk up which doesn't help. The "old school" had it right, so why change it?3 points

La Zip, you are 100% correct, trading has killed the domestic market and Asia has destroyed most NZ families. Broodmares particularly and a lot of Stallions too. Sadly on Thursday at the RT,R, I just added another nail to the coffin of my own family by selling a nice colt to Malaysia at cost. Fuck it were my thoughts at the time, and they haven't changed since.2 points

And wait for it your trainer is----R Dunn. Good on you for being so loyal, if he cant beat AS in next few seasons then perhaps you might want to change stables and make some money for your syndicates2 points -

Aussie racing gets plenty of people punting and going to racemeetings without Winx. I agree great horses would help but have we even had one since Sunline? Not something we can rely on and with our shitty stakes who in their right mind would keep a great horse here? Hence I see stakes as a far greater issue. I would also argue trading is the only thing keeping NZ racing alive at all as who would be crazy enough to have a horse/train/etc without a re-sale market? Surely we would have 500 horses nationwide if no-one could ever on sell. I do respect your thoughts and you have valid reasoning. I'm just the other side of the coin.2 points -
Auckland fields ?friday
Bruce J Hadley reacted to john legend for a topic
thank goodness Addington racing friday as AK turnover I predict will go through the floor. 5 trots including a ..................... wait for it agh!!!!!!!!! a Saddle trot . the big city needs a Promotion person to find why a handful of pacers are even interested in racing at our mega city. Excuses have run out. I amsure we may have brought some horses North if a travel subsidy was offered. but never any contact from anyone. I realise a saddle trot a novelty and the once a year corporate clients that buy some refreshments will have a great laugh at it. Why not have 2 saddle trots (10 races) as it will be amusing but of no benefit to regular drivers. Geez Auckland missing Kevin Smith bigtime.! I know I am turning into a grumpy old (71)man but I can see serious errors of judgement after 60 years .as bob D says "you dont need aweatherman to know which way the wind is blowing!1 point -

I see you are still barking up the wrong tree La Zip, what you are suggesting will not make a blind bit of difference to the survival of NZ Racing. What it will in fact do is drive those who still race a few and sell the rest even quicker out of the game and exasperate the problem. Those people above whom you state do not recompense the industry, are providing employment for stable hands, trackwork riders, admin staff, facilities staff, vets, feed merchants, farriers and so on, plus paying fees all over the place. Its a bloody long bow to state they are not recompensing the industry in some way. As I stated in my above post, you are focusing on a victim of the problem rather than the cause.1 point -
What compounds this problem are 2 issues. Trading to Asia has killed the value of the Stud book. As you say Insider, selling a colt to Malaysia will do nothing for your family. And anyone that wants to argue that a win in Singapore, Macau, Malaysia and to a degree Hong Kong enhances your family, go and take a dose of salts. Secondly, we sell these horses, in the majority of cases, with no GST payable. And whilst this is a government policy, it’s actually detrimental to our industry. We’re asking the Government to see its way clear for funding but we’re sending our assets offshore (tax/levy free) for the benefit of other racing jurisdictions. The majority of these horses have benefited from NZ industry facilities. As you all say, how many of those with trainers license are dependent on the trading market? Yet apart from monthly track fees and the personal “benefit” of those trading, what recompense is there for the industry..? We all complain about the lack of infrastructure and repairs, yet we let those take a benefit without paying. NZB has made their money,A trainer will take his 10%, a bloodstock agent will take his cut, but where is the benefit for the industry? We are selling our assets for no benefit, other than for those directly involved. Yet we’re all paying....in one way or another. Primarily these horses using our facilities for, their education And are not being sent to the races, denying the industry TAB revenue. Im just reading through the list of Holders of A licenses...just noticed 1 who trains in the central district who trials with regularity but has yet to have a race day starter...another up north who had a nice Group winner a week or so ago, has 25 in work yet only half a dozen for domestic racing... A bitter pill to swallow, but it maybe time to adjust the status quo...in return for Government assistance we place an “exit” levy on exports to Asia. These trainers who don’t have a set amount of starters yet have a trade horses, pay a hefty levy for their license. Im sure the quality of the NZ reared horse has added value in Asia.... and if they want a continuity of supply, they need to pay. Otherwise the pond will dry up...and as we’re seeing now, breeders are dropping off like flies. What happen then? Just as an example, The TABs in Australia ask everyone to pay them for putting on the Show via a point of consumption tax.....so this is no different. Time to ask hard questions and implement a sustainable system to ensure the industry as a whole benefits, not just a few.1 point

Fear enough Newmarket, I agree we did sign for a few yearlings last year but if you look at the average price it was quite low. I hope you are right and we bought well and somehow take out a premiership but those all stars are bloody good.1 point

Not that easy to get a horse into All Stars , you don't pick them , they pick your horse. Very selective ,and can assess a horse quickly. As for the rest I believe the Dunn stable is as good if not better than any. They turn their horses out well ,place them to advantage and have good communication........and obviously get very good results.1 point -
If I based Picking a trainer based on winning a premiership I would certainly be with the all stars but at the moment I'm more than happy to go out on a Saturday morning and drive one of my own. As for a connection gearing up there own horse I find that very hard to believe, John is very particular pre race and I have been in the stables at every meeting at addington over the last ten years and haven't witnessed it yet. But who knows it may have happened. As for being a successful syndicate or not maybe you base results solely on making money , as for me I think if you can break even and have a good time your a genius. As for Robert buying tried horses my call is bull shit on that.1 point

If you are someone who has been following the Trump/Russia collusion.. and have had heard bits and peices from Alternative-media.. regarding the Obama spygate /Mueller with President Trump impeachment etc This Clip with Dan Bongino connects all the dots in a manner which is very eye opening!! i love the breakdown, and the simplistic way in which he makes the presentation!! Its a must see!! Not sure how long before the clip gets censored and removed by youtube!!1 point

I think Gubes that dogs are not affected by the tracks as horses are. Most will run similar on whatever surface. In my experience with dogs though some don't like racing in the wet (rain) more than others but I have never been able to link that their sire.1 point

The horse, Long Leaf, was mentioned. Should it come, and it has connections here, J Mac will probably come as well. Michael Guerin did say "probably" in relation to the 3 meetings referred to above. He speculated that anyone who had a horse in one of the big races, and did not have a confirmed jockey, would no doubt be interested in booking McDonald. The reference to crowds escapes me. I did not hear MG make any reference to those.1 point

Starter - Lamb
john legend reacted to eljay for a topic
the drivers know Lamb's ways and try and get a flyer by anticipating his call. The more he uses the jog up starting method, he has invented the more these "cunning" drivers will play it and try to get an advantage over others. Lamb also appears to have the mantle of Senior Starter for the harness code so there is no one to "sharpen him up"1 point -

Fartoomuch reacted to Thejanitor for a topic
It was. Starting methods seem to have changed. When Jack Mulcay was starter the procedure was that the No. 1 horse would line-up at the tape first and the others follow suit, you would end up with a straight line of horses on the tape, they would stand for a moment and then the tape would fly. This years Cup was different, the No. 1 horse, The Fixer, was three lengths from the tape when the tape flew. Fortunately, for the horses' connections, it didn't matter much because many other horses were also out of line. Despite breaking for a few strides the horse soon made up ground. I think the horse broke because Rasmussen had to rush it to get a handy spot in the running because she probably wasn't expecting the tape to fly when it did? If Lamb is to remain starter the Cup should become a mobile start.1 point -

What the
yorky reacted to Rules For Some for a topic
With the current rules in place in NSW and Victoria, numbers have decreased dramatically in the last few years. It has really hit NSW and Victoria hard. Many meetings are reopened for one or two days at a time these days. I understand sprinters going to NZ. Unless you are a small hobby trainer having some fun or you have one of the top 5 best sprinters in the country, they are not viable to keep in Australia. Better of sending them to NZ where they can make 30-50k. Same goes with middle distance dogs in NSW, if you can't compete at the top 5 or 6 tracks in NSW, these same dogs will make 20-30k jumping between c1-3 in NZ. I remember sending a dog that made 3k in 30 races to NZ a few years ago. Made 35k jumping between c1-3 races over 100 starts in NZ. Could never have made that in Australia. From a financial perspective, NZ is ideal for many of these dogs that aren't good enough in Australia1 point -

As claimers didnt take off in Nz perhaps another separation from the present set up used extensively in USA to keep horses racing.... is conditions such as "FOR UP TO 4 WIN HORSES THAT HAVE NOT WON MORE THAN $3000 LAST 5 STARTS." the wins and dollars won can change but advantage is trainers could find race with other horses in a struggling category.works well in uSA.(maybe even 1/2 points for win) dont like copy trump country but may be some merit with trainers/handicappers ideas.1 point -

Each to their own Tim but the gearing up bit came from connections. As for R Dunn being a great trainer , IMHO he should be doing a lot better given how much he spends buying both tried and untried horses. A quick look at his massive last yearling sales purchase suggest he should be winning premierships very soon given team AS scale back1 point -

Problem is NZ are forced to sell best where UK, Ire and Australia keep best sell the ones below that and the ones below that stay in country , race on decent tracks to keep the midweek meetings ticking over for punters with horses moving up and down handicap, with a rating system that's pretty straightforward for punter to follow. The handicappers that go for years keep whole thing ticking over. Ireland went through a period of decline from mid eighties for about ten years , coincided with Vincent O'Briens career tapering off and in jumping game anything half decent going to UK. The classics in Ireland were in the main cleaned up by UK trainers and a few by Andre Fabre. The jumps trainers couldn't get a look in at Cheltenham and tracks in Ireland were getting run down. Then came some big tax breaks , Aiden O'Brien , resurgent Coolmore , the genius of Willie Mullins over jumps helped by big owners like Rich Ricci and JP MacManus, they kept their best horses at home , the crowds came back and the courses upgraded. Mullins now a big importer of stock from France and a lot of the good ones purchased in Ireland are from point to point field as many were in past but basically untapped not their superstars from under rules.1 point -

Ruby reacted to scooby3051 for a topic
Hi everyone Maija will be keeping everyone up to date here with her progress and also how the Horses are going as well. Here is her latest progress and her best mate.... FROM MAIJA I've been getting a bit more movement and feeling through my legs, I do physio twice a day and they have just started letting me do independent excercises which is things I'm okay to do in the gym by myself which I spend most of my day doing. My release date from hospital was supposed to be the 21st of November, however they want me to stay an extra two weeks because they are worried I might hurt myself if I go home to early, as I'm always trying to do things I'm not quite capable of yet. I've been able to put some weight through my legs while in a frame holding my body, although my left leg is having a lot of spasms, it's spasms uncontrollably through out the whole day and almost every time I try move, the doctors are planning to treat it with an injection of botox to try stop the spasms. My Dad comes in every morning to see me and bring Toro in and my Mum comes every evening to have dinner with me and take toro home.1 point
