Hi I train Larima and I want to clarify a few things. I can reassure you all the horse is fine and she has never slipped before. Her shoes were great and as per all meetings they get checked prerace and were fine after the race too. Larima changed legs as she begun to make her move at around the 900m mark then slipped. She wasn’t the only one as there were a number of slip marks. I am just thankful she didn’t do any severe damage or take down another horse. Rosie was lucky not to fall and needed to check the horse was ok before continuing. She was also squeezed at the start and got held up at the end. Rosie is a group 1 winning jockey who can ride light. There are not too many that can claim that particularly in the CD. Her ride on Peso was great. She has also recently lost her father so I am willing to forgive the odd piece of bad judgement but class is permanent. Larima still finished off well and this wouldn’t have been the case if the horse wasn’t right. So a luckless run that couldn’t be much much worse.

Sitting at home on this fine holiday watching Palmerston North dogs I found myself wondering this.. With summer coming on fast how do the dogs cope sitting in trailers on asphalt car parks for hours at a time? Is it responsible to card 13-15 race meetings in this weather when there is not sufficient shade to park under?

Was at Riccarton day Yogi won its maiden , circled the field and caned them. Lost race on failed test after but has done alright in Aussie. Will need luck from 13 though. Wall of Fire another ex Hugo Palmer horse from Newmarket I think. Read other day Best of Days was also with Palmer last year stablemates with Mask of Time, both end up Aussie for new connections and dead heat .Wall of Fire does look to be building and think you might have found the value ew bet in the race right there , worth risking few bucks even with draw at those odds OM. Might have bit on that and Finche .

  6. Interesting chap. He was a very very wealthy person and loved his horse racing. His most success at racing came through his association with Bart Cummings. His 4 Melb Cup wins were undeniably his greatest moments as an owner. However, his handling of So You Think was disappointing and difficult to understand. Here was a “filthy rich” person who loved racing. He didn’t need one cent of the money - yet sold SYT after it won 2 Cox Plates as a 3 and 4 yo. Cummings was adamant he could emulate the great Kingston Town and win a 3rd CP but Dato sold the horse to Coolmore. Why would he do that? A man who clearly doesn’t need a $? SYT could have been something else in Australia - as dominant as Winx maybe? Amazing how money can influence some - even when they don’t need it. Cummings was shattered by what Dato did. He couldn’t understand such action. Horses like SO YOU THINK are rare. I remember Manikato’s owner telling me one day that he’d tried to buy another Manikato (for which he paid less than $4k!) but had bought 17 slow ones in a row ! Says it all - as per that Beatles hit - “Money can’t be me love!”

  7. I got to Te Rapa today just before the sixth and straight to the bar. Had my first bet in the seventh...all on the nose of Sword Of Osman. He looked terriffic in the parade ring and is a front runner (should of thought of that before posting earlier). I did the same again in the last (Race 8) all on the nose of The Mitigator (Front runner). Best two race meeting I've ever been to!

Couldn’t disagree with you more Ohokaman. Ultimate Machete, Tiger Tara, Dream About Me, Cruze Bromac , Chicago Bull all genuine open class horses with a chance. And 1 or 2 others that could surprise also. Probably the most competitiveCup for years. True there is no standout like Laz. But last years cup wasn’t very exciting with Laz leading virtually all of the way and not many moves from memory. Any one of 7 or 8 could win it and it wouldn’t be surprising. Best cup for years IMHO

Agree, however they should have galloped at racespeed, hence the payment to the willing trainers, that's professionism at work, and Goodwin reckons they trialed on the track, I've got a nose bleed from researching, checking their statements, , they are the masters of bull dust, but only because they aren't held to account, no one is, so on and on it goes, where it stops nobody knows.

  18. No rules are rules..Crusty got lucky as we all could on any given day, that's the beauty of it...having said that yes next time we do something like this boxing 4 is not a bad suggestion. Still got a few big races to go and a few where upsets and big divvy are very possible. So Crusty is still able to be beaten, its not over just yet....

Naki, it's awesome when trainers /owners/breeders etc come onto these sites and explain things and discuss racing , couple down South Island do and again for a small time punter like me with a passion for racing it's brilliant, thank you .

Sadly this situation carries on, more and more of the masses of low level punters like me will end up spending our punting dollar on Australian Racing, basically free up morning and early afternoon for other family activities and start our punting day at 3pm. I've started not looking too much at our racing more and more , I sadly find myself losing track of our racing especially while Aussie is absolutely enthralling Spring and Autumn. Hopefully somewhere along the line like Luke Radich wisely said on weigh in other week there's a middle ground from Messara report that can move racing forward here without crushing the people who have kept it going at the lower end .

Who’s going to front up and explain today’s debacle? Trainers ,Jockeys , starters , stablehands all get fined for the simplest oversight or mistake. Today we have a racecourse that has been out of action for 9 months or so has had extensive drainage work undertaken and then it’s given the all clear to resume. My question is why weren’t jumpouts or offical trials held on the track to see if it was up to scratch ? Word is 12 horses from a stable galloped in pairs to approve the surface obviously that’s not good enough. Who from NZTR is going to stand up and admit we stuffed up . Mr Saundry has had an armchair ride since Mr Purcell went .Probably about time he faced the music.

The same amount of coverage haha really? The same amount??But the other trainers out there don't have the same volume and class of cattle. Nowhere near it. The blue army dominate harness racing so is it not "fair" that they get a decent amount of coverage? Jesus they are likely to have almost a third of the runners starting in the cup this year. Plus their intermediate grade and juvenile runners will be fair flying. It is now common place where the stable win multiple races on the big race days. They clean up the majority of age group racing for pacers. I would rather hear about the news from the All Stars camp and have Michael relaying his phone calls to Purdon etc like he does on the box seat, than get the same amount of news from the nobodys and also rans. Variety is nice though, good interesting piece on the Barron bros a while back on the box seat.
