  1. With the Tauherenikau abandonment we all are still waiting to hear what the alternative venue if any is going to be ? The programming over the next month for CD horses seems crazy . The only two up to the 20th of September are run at New Plymouth and these aren’t viable options for horses based on the eastern side .Masterton it’s a round trip of 650 kms and Hastings 782 kms.In reality they are more southern Waikato meetings. We can’t have owners paying bills for the next month with no options to race their mid week horses . Something needs to be sorted ASAP and when NZTR do don’t run a poxy 7/8 race programme run a 10 race card if the numbers stack up .

    Sky TV Losses

I see Sky TV annouces the loss of another 57000 customers this past 12 months, so this will no doubt be another big chunk of viewers not viewing trackside. Maybe it is tme the racing board/Tab took it back over again and while doing so go back to the old format or at least have one channel soley for NZ races. I certainly dont watch it as much as I used to as I am not particularly interested in aussie racing and cannot abide the cutting short of NZ coverage to watch some obscure race in the back blocks of never never land.

  5. Would many sit at home punting on Riverton at 9am ? Pretty unlikely wouldn't you say RR ? More likely to be checking form for whatever local meeting is on. American racing is another waste of time...miniscule non-commingled pools....you have to wonder....

  6. I can only guess the indirectly part gives the wriggle room on the 50,000 people. Can push it and say , diesel mechanic who repairs horse float , his/her part supplier for said float , the tyre company , the caterers on course , their suppliers , the stationary suppliers to all persons requiring stationary in industry. It can get silly but that's the wriggle room if pushed on figures I'd guess. It's mentioned again this racefields legislation . I cannot understand the racing board borrowed at much fanfare to up prizemoney on strength of this expected cash flow, if that's dead in water theres a black hole in funds because the piper will need be paid, the tin can can only be kicked down road up to a point.I was never sure who was going to pay the big dollars to bet on NZ racing . The timezone is all wrong for big overseas markets or am I missing something.? Maybe morning Aussie punters but every tab I've been in in Aus in morning is empty , apart from one near Flemington on big day and next door to Caulfield on big day. Would many sit at home punting on Riverton at 9am ? I am sure there's a plan though.

  7. wSorry to see passing of Monty Baker. A real good guy of harness racing.. been a family friend since roskill south days. He did tell my Dad when I got a share in my first horse in 1968 that it was a bad move as I will be broke owning trotters. Well 50 years later he had some real good ones and I have not yet raced a champion and not quite broke but with memories of absolute solid gold...

  8. Economists say the Sky Path will bring economic benefits to NZ/AUCKLAND. Hamilton is still waiting for benefits from the V8s and the Rugby Stadium that gets used very sparingly.Build the stadium and they will come said the spin doctors. News during the week that a major player in the food industry in Hamilton is to close 3 restaurants due to lack of patronage. These councils are full of b/s and their economists are b/s artists. If they were that good they would have predicted the last GFC.Rates in Hamilton continue to rise. Make the sky path user pays.

  9. As an aside, living in Oz you can't access your NZ TAB account, total blackout, so why on earth would the many Kiwi's living in Oz bet into the NZ racing, maybe through patriotism?......any betting, and it's minuscule will go through TAB CORP or CORP agencies......sorry, the misleaders, those that knowingly mislead the industry and the punters re the race fields legislation and expected revenues should be held accountable, and through the right legal channels if necessary, ignorance is no excuse in the eyes of the law.

  12. The American exercise would tell you that doesn't work P. Only the small time and inveterate gamblers bother with that stuff and when you only have a few hundred dollars in the pools, clearly there is little appetite for it when not co-mingled. The other thing is dimensions, you can't compare NZ and Australia for a multitude of reasons...but population and available discretionary dollars being the obvious ones....there's only so much to go around for the average punter.

  14. I can't see the site from here anymore since the aussies changed the betting laws, but will when i'm back home next month. It's wall to wall racing over here now and there is more and more content going on sky channel every week, They've just added USA dogs in the last few weeks, VIC Tab held ~20k on the meeting today with a take out rate of between 15-30% why wouldn't you. They would be holding near that figure again fixed odds across the entire meeting. The other online bookies here are following suit and offering it all, racing from America, South America, Argentina, Japan, Korea, India, Trots from Sweden etc anything the tab shows on Sky channel. The racing 'purists' in our industry need to understand the difference between racing and wagering. FFS who really cares what racing is on Trackside as long as our domestic racing is given the appropriate level of coverage. Trackside 1 is pretty much a replay channel half the week anyway, fill it with wall to wall racing and get people betting, it generates turnover which makes its way back to our industry.

  20. Meeting News Transfer of September Meetings in Northern Region Following on from the Pakuranga Hunt meeting moving to Te Aroha, the Auckland RC Premier Meeting on 9 September will now also be staged at that venue. This has necessitated the cancellation of the Te Aroha meeting on Sunday 2 September. NZTR will work with the Northern Programming Committee to add a race(s) where necessary during this period. In order that maintenance work can be carried out on the Te Rapa track two industry days later in September have also had venue changes: Wednesday September 19: This meeting will now be conducted by the Waipa RC at Te Awamutu Wednesday September 26: This meeting will now be conducted by the Matamata RC at Matamata Any minor distance changes required will be notified in the coming days.

  21. After further discussion with stakeholders and NZ Jumps Inc, and taking into account the likelihood of heavy track conditions, it has been decided that the Pakuranga Hunt Cup will now be run over 4200m. There is no appropriate start point at or near the 4800m mark at Te Aroha.

Watch the Cd horses scratch. Wrong way round for them. Dam shame these tracks that were all sand slit seem to be falling to bits. Now they wana put an all weather track in and they have already proven to be massive failures in Aussie. Wake up and smell the scammers nztr

No surprises victims are fuming with Little’s catch and release plans by CS Victims of crime are fuming about Andrew Little’s soft on crime conference: That is despicable racism that wouldn’t be tolerated if reversed. But somehow it is OK to slag off white people in New Zealand now. Worse, the minister excuses it. The forum is a disgrace, and falling apart. Last week sopping wet, crim-hugging, liberal panty-waist Roger Brooking was slamming it. Now victims are slamming it. The challenge is to get Maori to stop committing crime, then they won’t be the largest race in prison. Unfortunately this government is looking at the whole issue ass-backwards. We don’t need or want a criminal friendly system. We want bad bastards locked up for a good long time.

Looks a cracker tonight , when Benbatl a top 10 horse in World ratings goes off at 14s it's deep in class. Be interesting how this years classic generation stacks up against them older horses . I think Poets Voice looks cut above .The Great Voltiguer might have some bearing on Melb Cup plans .Horses struggling to get into Ebor Saturday by all accounts . Anything under 9st looks a goner. Willie Mullins red hot favorite on a knife edge ballot wise and it's a 500 k race now so not to be sniffed at.

Eg. "Off the scene since (enter number of months here), and fitness told over the final furlong". The punter would be better off sitting back and observing on Thursday night.

  28. I think some of the comments re Messara are a bit off track. The guy is one of Aust most successful breeders via Arrowfield. He’s a successful racehorse Owner. His son is a successful racehorse Trainer. Himself is a very capable Racing Administrator and single handedly, pushed Racing NSW and Australian in the right direction, working “with” the Govt to bring it out of the doldrums. As a result, Racing in Aust is far better off for his direct involvement. So, when he was invited to do a report on NZ Racing, There’s no doubt in my opinion, that the right person was chosen. Sure, some in NZ (eg, BArryB ) might say, “but he’s an Aussie and us kiwis don’t need another Ozzie blah blah blah etc”. The biggest worry for NZ (imho) is “ “What is activated from the Report - if anything?”. Going on past performances, NZR doesn’t do itself any favours and no Govt has ever looked upon it as an Industry that contributes to the NZ Economy and also the social fabric of Society. So much can be done to invigorate it but whether or not the Govt and Racing Authorities have the will to apply the paddles to the patient is another story. But don’t blame Messara - he has the broad knowledge of Racing and he has the runs on the Board - something many on this site don’t have.
