At a time when many people are talking about closing small tracks and centres wasn’t it great to see the small guys stand up yesterday with horses that would have long been discarded in the horse factories that are proposed . Waiuku , hunterville, Waipukurau and Opaki all take a bow .Yesterday showcased the beauty and diversity of NZ racing. Let’s not follow the Aussies and have most races dominated by a couple of stables . The people in this great industry are just as important as the majestic horse.

    Lazarus

On a gorgeous Friday evening (Aug. 10) in which it appeared a presence from above intervened to provide perfect conditions, Lazarus N, the Wonder from Down Under, anointed himself as a true superstar with an impressive 1:48.4 performance in the $325,000 Dan Patch Stakes at Hoosier Park Racing & Casino before a legion of admirers in his first pari-mutuel engagement in the U.S. “One of the reasons I decided to buy this horse with my brothers was because we are devoutly Catholic,” said Duncan Taylor, whose Taylor Made Farms owns the 6-year-old stallion. “First of all his name is Lazarus which represents a miracle, and his dam’s name is Bethany, which is the location where the resurrection took place. Then Bethany’s sire is Christen Cullen. These factors made it appear as if (purchasing the horse) was meant to be and a gift from god.” Guided by Yannick Gingras and conditioned by Hall of Famer Jimmy Takter, Lazarus N, a son of Bettor’s Delight, left alertly from his assigned post position nine to settle into second behind fellow New Zealand-bred Bit Of A Legend N before the teletimer posted the first quarter-mile split of :26.1. Shortly after the two frontrunners glided around the first turn, Gingras brushed the stallion to the lead and the duo hit the half-mile marker in a measured :54.2. As Lazarus N continued to lead the field of nine through to the three-quarter pole in 1:22.4, he placed a bit of separation between himself and his rivals. As he rounded the final turn, it seemed the horse would pull away in the stretch to post a facile victory. Halfway down the lane, however, Breeders Crown victor Split The House (Brett Miller) mounted a furious rally which drew him nearly alongside Lazarus N. Proving he already has established a passionate fan base, those in attendance were cheering so loudly for Lazarus N to hit the wire first the words of announcer Steve Cross could scarcely be heard. As the noise of the crowd drowned out all sound, Gingras asked his horse for more. He responded in kind to spurt away from Split The House, as well as a closing McWicked (Brian Sears), to stop the clock in 1:48.4. The stallion paced his last quarter mile in a stellar :26. “Yannick said this horse only does what you ask of him,” Taylor said. “In Thoroughbred racing we would refer to it as not getting to the bottom of them, but in Lazarus’ case he is just a very relaxed horse. Jimmy (Takter) keeps telling us how intelligent he is and that characteristic definitely a part of why he is a special horse. All I know is he is a blessing.”

Lazarus win leads the national sports TV news in NZ. Not just a story, not a minor network, lead story on our biggest network television news bulletin. Great exposure, top work from @GuyHeveldt. You just don’t see this in almost any other country in the world. Not even close!

We had a Guinness and then had a look ariund. We didn’t realise it was so big out the back and probably could have had a meal. The photos and memorabilia were awesome and the whole looks like great craic! raining here right now, but meant to clear and the track is going to be good. I’m using the tips from attheraces.com. Although with so many first starters, I might just go on looks. I’ve got aunts, uncles and cousins all heading to the course and none of them know anything about racing (although one aunt backed red rum when he beat Crisp). Will be a great day!

Hes won the last two NZ Cups over 2 miles by huge margins including the NZ record, Austalasian harness horse of the year, nearly 3 mil in stakes, won 35 out of 45 starts, never further back than 3rd, won Interdominion Final, goes to USA and wins first up against horses that have won 3 mill running 1.48 and people still want to call him average and unexciting. WHAT THE ?? You can never please everybody and that will always be the case with Laz no matter what he does or how he wins. Because hes not an inconsistent Lord Module winning brilliantly from last or a bully like Gammalite, and just goes out and gets the job done often in record times some people always find a reason to be negative. Wether its jealousy, anti All Stars brigade or they are just negative people it doesnt matter as WE all know he is a champion and WE love watching him race.

  12. Abbott: Well Costello, I'm going to New York with you. You know Bucky Harris, the Yankee's manager, gave me a job as coach for as long as you're on the team. Costello: Look Abbott, if you're the coach, you must know all the players. Abbott: I certainly do. Costello: Well you know I've never met the guys. So you'll have to tell me their names, and then I'll know who's playing on the team. Abbott: Oh, I'll tell you their names, but you know it seems to me they give these ball players now-a-days very peculiar names. Costello: You mean funny names? Abbott: Strange names, pet names...like Dizzy Dean... Costello: His brother Daffy. Abbott: Daffy Dean... Costello: And their French cousin. Abbott: French? Costello: Goofè. Abbott: Goofè Dean. Well, let's see, we have on the bags, Who's on first, What's on second, I Don't Know is on third... Costello: That's what I want to find out. Abbott: I say Who's on first, What's on second, I Don't Know's on third. Costello: Are you the manager? Abbott: Yes. Costello: You gonna be the coach too? Abbott: Yes. Costello: And you don't know the fellows' names? Abbott: Well I should. Costello: Well then who's on first? Abbott: Yes. Costello: I mean the fellow's name. Abbott: Who. Costello: The guy on first. Abbott: Who. Costello: The first baseman. Abbott: Who. Costello: The guy playing... Abbott: Who is on first! Costello: I'm asking YOU who's on first. Abbott: That's the man's name. Costello: That's who's name? Abbott: Yes. Costello: Well go ahead and tell me. Abbott: That's it. Costello: That's who? Abbott: Yes. PAUSE Costello: Look, you gotta first baseman? Abbott: Certainly. Costello: Who's playing first? Abbott: That's right. Costello: When you pay off the first baseman every month, who gets the money? Abbott: Every dollar of it. Costello: All I'm trying to find out is the fellow's name on first base. Abbott: Who. Costello: The guy that gets... Abbott: That's it. Costello: Who gets the money... Abbott: He does, every dollar. Sometimes his wife comes down and collects it. Costello: Who's wife? Abbott: Yes. PAUSE Abbott: What's wrong with that? Costello: Look, all I wanna know is when you sign up the first baseman, how does he sign his name? Abbott: Who. Costello: The guy. Abbott: Who. Costello: How does he sign... Abbott: That's how he signs it. Costello: Who? Abbott: Yes. PAUSE Costello: All I'm trying to find out is what's the guy's name on first base. Abbott: No. What is on second base. Costello: I'm not asking you who's on second. Abbott: Who's on first. Costello: One base at a time! Abbott: Well, don't change the players around. Costello: I'm not changing nobody! Abbott: Take it easy, buddy. Costello: I'm only asking you, who's the guy on first base? Abbott: That's right. Costello: Ok. Abbott: All right. PAUSE Costello: What's the guy's name on first base? Abbott: No. What is on second. Costello: I'm not asking you who's on second. Abbott: Who's on first. Costello: I don't know. Abbott: He's on third, we're not talking about him. Costello: Now how did I get on third base? Abbott: Why you mentioned his name. Costello: If I mentioned the third baseman's name, who did I say is playing third? Abbott: No. Who's playing first. Costello: What's on first? Abbott: What's on second. Costello: I don't know. Abbott: He's on third. Costello: There I go, back on third again! PAUSE Costello: Would you just stay on third base and don't go off it. Abbott: All right, what do you want to know? Costello: Now who's playing third base? Abbott: Why do you insist on putting Who on third base? Costello: What am I putting on third. Abbott: No. What is on second. Costello: You don't want who on second? Abbott: Who is on first. Costello: I don't know. Abbott & Costello Together:Third base! PAUSE Costello: Look, you gotta outfield? Abbott: Sure. Costello: The left fielder's name? Abbott: Why. Costello: I just thought I'd ask you. Abbott: Well, I just thought I'd tell ya. Costello: Then tell me who's playing left field. Abbott: Who's playing first. Costello: I'm not... stay out of the infield! I want to know what's the guy's name in left field? Abbott: No, What is on second. Costello: I'm not asking you who's on second. Abbott: Who's on first! Costello: I don't know. Abbott & Costello Together: Third base! PAUSE Costello: The left fielder's name? Abbott: Why. Costello: Because! Abbott: Oh, he's centerfield. PAUSE Costello: Look, You gotta pitcher on this team? Abbott: Sure. Costello: The pitcher's name? Abbott: Tomorrow. Costello: You don't want to tell me today? Abbott: I'm telling you now. Costello: Then go ahead. Abbott: Tomorrow! Costello: What time? Abbott: What time what? Costello: What time tomorrow are you gonna tell me who's pitching? Abbott: Now listen. Who is not pitching. Costello: I'll break your arm, you say who's on first! I want to know what's the pitcher's name? Abbott: What's on second. Costello: I don't know. Abbott & Costello Together: Third base! PAUSE Costello: Gotta a catcher? Abbott: Certainly. Costello: The catcher's name? Abbott: Today. Costello: Today, and tomorrow's pitching. Abbott: Now you've got it. Costello: All we got is a couple of days on the team. PAUSE Costello: You know I'm a catcher too. Abbott: So they tell me. Costello: I get behind the plate to do some fancy catching, Tomorrow's pitching on my team and a heavy hitter gets up. Now the heavy hitter bunts the ball. When he bunts the ball, me, being a good catcher, I'm gonna throw the guy out at first base. So I pick up the ball and throw it to who? Abbott: Now that's the first thing you've said right. Costello: I don't even know what I'm talking about! PAUSE Abbott: That's all you have to do. Costello: Is to throw the ball to first base. Abbott: Yes! Costello: Now who's got it? Abbott: Naturally. PAUSE Costello: Look, if I throw the ball to first base, somebody's gotta get it. Now who has it? Abbott: Naturally. Costello: Who? Abbott: Naturally. Costello: Naturally? Abbott: Naturally. Costello: So I pick up the ball and I throw it to Naturally. Abbott: No you don't, you throw the ball to Who. Costello: Naturally. Abbott: That's different. Costello: That's what I said. Abbott: You're not saying it... Costello: I throw the ball to Naturally. Abbott: You throw it to Who. Costello: Naturally. Abbott: That's it. Costello: That's what I said! Abbott: You ask me. Costello: I throw the ball to who? Abbott: Naturally. Costello: Now you ask me. Abbott: You throw the ball to Who? Costello: Naturally. Abbott: That's it. Costello: Same as you! Same as YOU! I throw the ball to who. Whoever it is drops the ball and the guy runs to second. Who picks up the ball and throws it to What. What throws it to I Don't Know. I Don't Know throws it back to Tomorrow, Triple play. Another guy gets up and hits a long fly ball to Because. Why? I don't know! He's on third and I don't give a darn! Abbott: What? Costello: I said I don't give a darn! Abbott: Oh, that's our shortstop.

    Jacinda Ardern

It seems we are about to pay the price of winstons personal hatred of some in the National party , she's about to hit the fan . Earlier in the week the Gov of reserve bank more or less pledged to hold interest rates until 2020 , unusual I thought , this guy is a lefty at heart which gives me real concerns , the position is supposed to be impartial . Tonight the real clanger , it seems property in AK is under more pressure than anyone admits , he has come out and said , don't worry if it drops , Aucklanders have plenty of equity in their property's so it won't be much of a problem , WHY THE COMMENT ? alarm bells ringing , if values drop 15% that's a real hit for established owners and for many new owners their deposit wiped out and they will have no actual equity in their houses . Timing is everything and this govt is completely out of step , next week the ban on foreign buyers will be passed in parliament , a double whammy for peoples housing values and the other effect will be the collapse of the house building industry , well done Jacinda and winston . Now bloke you are correct , National centre right , labour was centre left , not any more , hard left socialism , and logic has been tossed out the window , just give the plastic bag ban a little thought , it makes no sense the way they are handling it , ideology over logic , housing the same , flatten existing values then expect new property's to be built , dreamers .

    Lazarus

He can run 1:46, Gingras says post Lazarus's US debut win Trots Media - Michael Guerin 11 AUG 2018 Last Updated 11 Aug 2018 The man enjoying the ride behind Australasian pacing sensation Lazarus says only one horse may be able to stop him becoming the fastest pacer in history. And that would be Lazarus himself. Champion driver Yannick Gingras was still buzzing hours after driving Lazarus to a dominant victory in his first North American start, the pair overcoming the outside barrier to lead for the last half of the US$325,000 Dan Patch at Hoosier Park in Indiana on Saturday morning (AEST time). It was Lazarus’s first start in the United States since being sold for an estimated record price of $4 million to Taylor Made Stallions. While he had been the best standardbred in Australasia for two years and qualified in sensational time in the US two weeks ago, any horse traveling to the other side of the world to take on their best comes with question marks. Lazarus turned those into exclamations marks with his 1:48.8 mile. The win has already justified his purchase price because with North American breeders now seeing how powerful Lazarus is in full flight he is guaranteed a commercial start to a dual hemispehere stallion career. That leaves the $3.8 million earner with just a couple of major targets that could greatly embellish his reputation — winning at the Breeders Crown in late October and pacing a super fast mile time, close to the world record of 1:46 held by Always B Miki. But while Gingras says that time may be within Lazraus physical capabilities, the horse himself might need some company. “A lot of things need to happen to get down to that speed but I think he can do it,” Gingras said. “I have no doubt with the improvement he has in him he can pace 1:46 and change, maybe even 1:46 flat. “But to do that you need the right track, the right conditions and the right horses to push you. “Tonight he would have gone a lot faster if he had needed to and I think he is a horse who will always find more when another horse gets close to him and pushes him. “So to pace 1:46 he will need all of those things and a horse good enough to push him to that time. Otherwise I don’t think he is a horse who will want to go much faster than he has to to win. “But anything is possible because he had only had that one qualifier here before tonight’s race so he is obviously going to get better and better.” Lazraus’s next starts are likely to be in the heat and final of the Canadian Pacing Derby on August 25 and September 1 and yesterday’s win guarantees him a start in the Hoosier Park Derby on September 21. After that looms the US$500,000 major free-for-all at the rocket fast Red Mile (October 7) in Kentucky, the ideal track to attempt a lightning quick mile. “Tonight was the perfect starting point. He won, we got to show people how good he is but he wasn’t put under any strain.” What was it like driving the champ? “It is a real thrill. Driving any great horse is amazing but the novelty around him tonight and the way the race was promoted, and knowing so many people Down Under were watching. It was pretty special.”

Have a great day Catalano, The Curragh is a lovely track and fields look pretty even for today. Personally, The O'Brien''s are always hard to beat. With all the wet weather in the spring in Ireland alot of trainers have been 3/4 weeks behind in their preps.Fozzy Stack is a top man who's team has struggled this season because of the spring they have had,but has a couple of chances today.Billy Lee is one of my favourite jockeys , he rides very well and usually lands something with value especially when riding for McCreery. Enjoy your day

  20. Seriously good, cannot run in Leger as a Gelding, Gordon Stakes good Leger trial. Was a small field but second has run in two Derby's and Mark Johnston in top notch form at moment . Iam a massive Charlie Appleby groupie OM but he has proven that he can travel horses globe wide with success time and again so it is a factor here.He has seen Rekindling can do it so now no fear bringing out right three year old. Your BB from Appleby runs next week at Newbury , after next weekend it's Ebor meeting at Knavesmire then Prix Kegorley. The real trials are up there next few weeks before the Aussie and NZ big guns get serious. US Navy Flag getting no further runs then Quarantine then Everest. They run private races anyway at Ballydoyle if they need.

  22. LAST ONE............ I have made my point. The Shark: Best At Gore Harness On Saturday Photo by: Wild Range Photography Race 1 6 Laura Bush ($2.50): Falls into this race quite nicely considering what she has taken on recently. Blair Orange in the bike too, so there’s another tick and as a race winning against half a field of maidens she should be hard to beat. Selections: 6-1-8-10 Result 3 , 5 , 10 , 8 BET NOW Race 2 4 Stick Man ($1.75): Hails from a stable that knows how to get them going early and the workout and trial form would suggest a big debut is on offer here. Should take the bull by the horns and make it his own. Selections: 4-7-6-9 Result 4 , 1 , 7 , 2 ($1.60 ) BET NOW Race 3 6 Kiwi Bloke ($8.00): Not bad in last couple up in Canterbury from bad draws. Won’t be all the way down in Gore just to make up the numbers either. Not a real standout, but a good winning hope in what is an even looking line up. Selections: 6-3-10-12 Result 2 , 8 , 3 , 9 BET NOW Race 4 2 Tetrick ($13): Been waiting for this guy to get a good draw and here it is, should punch forward and hold a handy position and if it turns into a staying contest then he’ll be right in it for a very long way. Selections: 2-11-13-5 Result 12 , 3 , 10 , 4 BET NOW Race 5 4 Brian ($1.75): Huge run to win at Addington fresh up after going to war with The Commando. That run suggested the next grade should hold no barriers from success. If he finds the lead, look out. Selections: 4-11-12-7 Result 11 , 10 , 8 , 9 BET NOW Race 6 6 Franco Santino ($3.40): Classy customer back after a freshen up. Has real high speed and although another step up from his last assignment he looks more than capable of giving this a huge shake. Selections: 6-8-9-1 Result 6 , 3 , 2 , 5 BET NOW Race 7 7 Motu Top Mach ($2.40): There was a little bit of clase about that victory at Forbury Park last week. Ultra impressive in fact. Selections: 7-8-11-12 Result 10 , 4 , 1 ,7 BET NOW Race 8 7 Stunin Love ($2.60): Paul Court trained runner first up from a spell. My only bet for today.......

The Statesman was good yesterday.Competitive handicap under almost 60kgs joint top weight. 4 starts ago he was winning a maiden hurdle at Ludlow UK in Oct 2017, a lovely old track but the haunt of horses way below the top level of jumps scene in UK.Selling hurdles more the go there.Definitely not a Cheltenham. On that evidence the dual Champion hurdler Buveur D Air would chew up best stayers on Australia and spit them out. The Statesman would be 250 to 1 to beat that horse. That being said he's done a few connections some financial favours, with exch rates approx 120k buy for Ballydoyle as yearling , two 3rd places, on sold for approx 180k to Ian Williams trainer of Cory Browns Melbourne Cup ride Magic Circle. He gets two low grade flat handicap wins and a midweek maiden hurdle then 620k sale to the Darren' Weir stable and the horse is making a fair go at life in Australia.

  29. Interesting hearing Mark Rosonowski talk about this on Dogzone yesterday. He raised the 'dog to be re-homed' condition. And I think I agree with Roso, in that, it's stupid because it draws attention to the fact that a dog that has just won its connections $1mil has to have a written condition to ensure it gets to live past its use by date! That's a bad look. Infact Roso's whole tone was one of "why are they (dog racing nsw) drawing attention to themselves with a $1mil race and stupid 'trying too hard' re-homing conditions when we should be lying low and staying under the radar of the haters. Sad but true. How bad is it when that's the case! I've said before $1mil races, professionalism, exposure etc will not save this game, it will only hasten its demise. Sorry folks the only way this game can survive is as a hobby. People doing it for fun, love and ribbons. Ah yes the good old days. But it's too late now I think.

  31. Thanks Scooby, but I'm not a he.....I'm a she........and as an Australian who tried to live, support and more importantly invest my hard earned cash in New Zealand racing for the past 4 years, I believe I see things differently...I do have the practical experience of racing on both sides of the Tasman. As the President of my local track said to me "you know this is not Flemington or Rosehill"...which I replied "I'm fully aware of that but it doesn't stop you from running it like it was Flemington or Rosehill"..... I'm still supporting Kiwi trainers (I have 4 in work) and Kiwi breeders (3 mares).....if I was as BarryB suggests, then I would have taken my bat and ball and gone home. But I'm still supporting them..

  32. What a load of tripe, I sit here in Brizvegas and look at the pools and they are healthier than ever, UBET/TAB.COM/ and the corps, then I look at the NSW pool betting into the NZ Race day.......not the co-mingle delusion, the real deal, and UBET is worse, the interest here on NZ racing is negligible, the non tab fields here are racing for really good money, they survive on the bookies tax, oncourse tote, etc.......the fields in Melbourne are so good, their pools are amazing, and, the noms were so huge during the past weeks RVL have scheduled another meeting [xtra] at Bainsdale just to cater for all the ballots.......you can quote all you like, but we are living in reality here, oh, and heaps of sunshine, so we don't have the same chips on our shoulders.....hopefully most of you will accept the professionalism of John Messara, he should be lauded not punted into touch.
