    Russell Curtin

Today a champion bloke was laid to rest. The large gathering a testament to his popularity and the respect in which he was held in the Racing and larger community.A recurring theme from the many who spoke was of his willingness to help others, many times beyond the normal call of duty, his punctuality, work ethic, dry sense of humour and mostly his commitment to his family. Also his "occasional"and legendary use of the odd profanity. Many of the trotting and galloping fraternity present spent time with Russell in the truck and all have memories to share about a guy who would never let anyone down.A Legend.RIP Mate.

  2. Charlie Appleby has given the Racing Post an insight to his Melbourne team. Hamada who Ohokaman flagged up in earlier thread was not missed by the handicapper either having been raised a whopping 11lbs for his Newmarket effort. He misses Ebor now and goes to Newbury for Geoffrey Freer Stakes a good WFA race over the years then Melb Cup is the plan. He has got Emotionless a one time gun 2 year old back, now 5 years old and gelded he cruised home last week and Appleby said heads straight to Caulfield Cup , he will be among top weights if he gets there. The one I find most interesting is Walton Street , high level of form in only 7 starts , by Cape Cross but dam line all Australia and NZ. I am not aware of the merits of Sir Godfrey as a sire as past Encosta De Lago that horses dam line is a mystery to me as an import myself. Seems to be a changing of guard in Charlie Appleby 's squad. I know Qewy was retired and Francis of Assisi injured and probably retired. Folkswood and Rare Rhythm got no entries at moment. Benbatl from Saeed Bin Suroors yard heading for the Cox Plate entered in Sussex Stakes next week. He would be a good place bet behind Winx as high class horse. Cannot seeing it getting close to the Champion round the Valley though.

  3. The Foxbridge Plate was a Listed race until 2009 when it was upgraded to Group 3. It became a Group 2 event in 2015. No disrespect to Valentine Girl but her only blacktype win was her Foxbridge Plate victory. The last 6 winners of the race include Railway (Gr.1) winner Fleur de Lune, multiple group winner Postman's Daughter, Group 1 winners I Do and Addictive Habit, 3-time Group 2 winner Saracino and the afore-mentioned Underthemoonlight who has won or been placed in 8 black type races and beat home Close Up and Kawi....and the race is actually due to be run next month, not recently run.

    Fly To The Moon

I saw this three year old filly in race nine at Matamata yesterday. I thought her performance was the standout for the day. Okay, she only came second, but she will not be a maiden for long. The spell of frosts and fine weather, following damned awful persistent rain made for an unusually sticky track that can upset some horses. Maybe it suited this filly, but have a look at the replay and tell me if I am hallucinating.

    News from Wanganui

Just to be clear. To anyone following this thread. The Wanganui board wish to TRIAL a trial day change, for all the right reasons. There have been issues around Sunday trialing ever since I have been involved, one I have not mentioned is the difficulty of getting the track ready on a Sunday after rugby matches on Saturday. Recent video shows rugby supporters causing damage to the track while rugby matches are in progress. Matches are played inside our track. This included supporters holding races on the track and climbing on the boxes. Inappropriate supporter behaviour has been an ongoing issue for our club and track staff who have to regularly clean up after them before 10 am trials on Sunday. Removing broken glass which is a regular event is a major threat to all dogs who present for Sunday trials. Anyone reading already knows where I stand on animal welfare, it will always be my first priority. Our job is to eliminate all known risk factors, to control as many of the variables that we can for the benefit of all.

  9. hedley the Foxbridge Plate was first run in 1950 WFA over 1.25 miles. The distance was changed to 1400m in 1977. The first Foxbridge Plate was won by Mainbrace ridden by Grenville Hughes. Smart Fella ridden by Warwick Robinson and trained by Jack Taylor at Stratford won it in 1978.

Miles Better raced 82 times for 14 wins 12 seconds and 8 thirds. His last race was as a 12yo on the 18/2/86 in the Dunedin Gold Cup at Wingatui. Fittingly he ran 12th in the 16 horse field!

  11. CBT Said "The Foxbridge Plate was recently run. Can you name the winner? That’s my point." Underthemoonlight recently won it in August 2017. I think CBT may have got it mixed up with the $35,000 Race at Te Rapa last Saturday won by Salamanca? The $100,000 LISA CHITTICK FOXBRIDGE PLATE is run in a few weeks time on August 18.

    Fly To The Moon

Obviously has more than her share of ability but so does the man in the saddle. I'm picking he'll win some serious races in the new season. Very good judge of pace IMHO.

"What could happen if a horseupsets him? I believe he is likely to lash out and ill-treat the animal." This is the only comment I was referring to, suggest you read again if you can't understand that! Not once did I say his rants were ok, again have another read! Never said the last part either, can you read at all? I do wonder. Seeing as you like facts and English lessons, here is how your comment I was referring to is what I said it was. Profiling = The use of personal characteristics or behavior patterns to make generalizations about a person, Prejudiced = Preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience. Did you see or know that Bronson has lashed out and Ill-treated a horse??? Just because I abuse another driver for cutting me off does not mean I am going lash out at him! Bronson has made some poor choices, but as you rightfully said Taku, referring to "They" and "Both sides" Is saying he wasn't the only one carrying on like an idiot. An all round poor performance from two - three of our best Junior Drivers. But let's not forget, that's exactly what they are! Not everyone is perfect and they are still learning their craft. Do you think they will learn from this? $1.01 they will. Why? Because they love the industry, the people in it and most of all the horses! If you don't believe that then just read the profiles of our Jnr Drivers from the champs and see what drives them, who their mentors are etc! Now do as a Janitor does, mop up the dribble and keep things clean!

    New Zealand Netball

I was involved in coaching Netball for over 30 years, retiring at National Age Group competition level. I have taught at both secondary and primary schools and coached three other codes. I held various coaching qualifications as well as being a qualified sports medic so I have earned the right to have a say. In my time I have witnessed many changes. Three that stand out as detrimental to many sports are as follows: 1. The revamping of national championship competitions which reduced the number of areas able to compete at national competition level. Extremely talented kids continue to miss out as they are never seen and never receive the coaching or finance they need. 2. The introduction of Kiwi Sport at primary school level which put the emphasis on taking part has been detrimental in more ways than one. The no winners, no losers philosophy introduced across the country does not promote healthy competition and does not equip our kids for the future failures that they will inevitably experience once the duvet is removed. I see a link to this philosophy and the high youth suicide rate. Kiwi Sport was in part meant to be our response to child obesity, it failed. 3. The abolition of the 5-day working week has significantly reduced the coaching pool, again talent has been lost across the codes because of work commitments. Ask any club and they will tell you that they are struggling to find staff in all areas. I feel for any coach that puts their name forward in this current environment. If they find themselves at odds with any individual or admin, they are pretty much doomed. Players who have been conditioned over time are often reluctant to embrace change and can work to garner support for their view. It's about culture, a word used often in sport. It only takes one to topple all.

Yes Billy connolly you are right about Bert Lawton . Did a lot of buildings and stables for Bert/Daph held the world record for making cups of tea Glyn Tucker paid several visits to Berts kitchen and between them they walked on halllowed ground with serious dialogue on nightmarch'gloaming;kindergarton and great blood lines of yester year with copious cups of tea but he had a great depth of stud knowledge
