Ian Signal, who owned, trained and bred the top galloper of the 1960s and '70s Johnny Cash, was a visitor at the Otago Racing Club meeting on Saturday. Signal (85) spends his time touring New Zealand and living in a bus after retiring from farming pedigree Jersey cattle at Matamata. "I am lucky to be able to do it," Signal said. His visit to Wingatui has given him the chance to renew his acquaintance with trainer Brian Anderton, whom he has known for many years. Signal bred Johnny Cash in 1964 and named him after the country singer who had then made his name with songs such as I Walk The Line. "Johnny Cash saw the horse when he was in New Zealand and mention of that is made in his autobiography," Signal said. The horse was by Lord Sasanof, who won the Avondale, Great Northern and Wellington Guineas in 1959. The Fair's Fair entire won the Foxbridge Plate, Thames Valley Stakes, Queen Elizabeth Plate at Paeroa and the Clifford Plate at Ellerslie under weight-for-age conditions as a 5yr-old. Johnny Cash was out of Otahuhu, a non-Stud Book mare by Contact, winner of the 1936 Sydney Cup. Johnny Cash had his first win as a 2yr-old at Gisborne in May 1967 when trained at Matamata by Russell Campbell. The gelding won as a 3yr-old for Campbell from eight starts. "Russell had trouble keeping him sound so I decided to have a go at training by riding him on the farm," Signal said. Johnny Cash responded by winning at Te Rapa, Te Aroha and Ellerslie (an open 2000m) at 4. A horse named Tom Jones won the same day at Te Aroha. The pair clashed in the 1969 Waikato Gold Cup, with Johnny Cash the winner in the hands of David Peake. Johnny Cash won the Wellington Racing Club Handicap at Trentham two months later in 2.25 for the mile and a-half (2400m), slashing 2.25sec off the record for Australia and New Zealand set by Palfresco in the 1935 Caulfield Cup. Johnny Cash had his other win that season in the Even Stevens Challenge Cup at Te Rapa, a race named after the horse who won the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups in 1962. Even Stevens was trained at Te Rapa by Archie McGregor for Jim Wattie, who developed a major cannery at Hastings. Johnny Cash won the Allison Cup at Ellerslie in 1972 and '73 and raced until he was 9 when he ran Syndrome to a neck in the Carr Memorial at Rotorua. Syndrome was owned and trained by Ralph Manning, who has won the Greymouth, Gore and Taranaki and Cups this season with Bruce Almighty. "I had him [Johnny Cash] nominated for the Melbourne Cup twice but I never felt I was up to training in Australia. I did try my luck there later and won about five races in Queensland and Sydney with Johnny Paycheck and Jager," Signal said. Johnny Cash died at the age of 26.

  3. There are a number of countries (incl NZ) whose political system has let them down. Australia have people in the Senate, some who got “less than 150 votes in total”, holding Govt Legislation up and demanding deals before they will vote for legislation. Less than 150 f#%king votes! In NZ you have A Foreign Minister/Deputy PM (acting PM) who was voted out of Office!! In the Phillipines, you have a Leader who shoots and kills his opponents and crims - I think he’s up to 20,000 by now. The world is a strange place. The Queensland Govt is hitting betting operators with a 15% POC tax and is not returning any of it back to the Racing Industry - despite the fact that a similar tax in SOuth Aust has killed their Industry and in Victoria (4.3%) and NSW (going progressively down to 4.3% by 2022) racing is thriving. Why? Because Vic/NSW are returning the tax to the Industry. Then there’s NZ Racing. The world’s gone mad. Ladbrokes will sack 300 Qld workers and move its operations and focus on NSW/Vic. The result? Less tax for Qld Govt and a loss for Qld Racing. Idiots.

  6. It would depend: For example if there were only 6 more noms and they were two maidens over 375, two C2's over 457, one C5 375 and one more for the NZ racing series which already had three heats and only one with a vacancy then possibly only four races would be affected therefor there would be no need to redraw any of the remaining races.

and Chris I keep reminding people I rode and cantered Johnny Cash for 7 days at Ian' Signal's Walton farm while his magic daughter (Joy Robinson) watched. Ian was in hospital ( heart attack ) when I "trained " my first Waikato Times Gold Cup winner at age 18 !! Magic memories. Johnny Cash ( the Horse ) actually met the country and western star Johnny Cash in Auckland . Will find the pic later on ! Ian Signal also stood J C 's sire Lord Sasanof and milked about 112 cows. Joy Signal later on married a wonderful bloke, Mac Robinson, who I believe has that Waikato Cup. Joy was killed in a car crash while returning home from her amazing association with Roger's King's Clere Stables . I wrote a tribute to Joy's Life in Dennis Ryan's Informant.

  8. It might help if the distinctions between the different components of the racing industry were clearer to the road worker. So too the differences between the financial returns to the top players in each component compared to those of the average and the strugglers. NZTR might be expected to promote understanding of the state of the NZ industry on behalf of those battling to continue participating in it. It is galling when NZTR's Racing Desk runs an article about Rachel Frost relocating to Victoria with a string of horses but doesn't report why she gave up on NZ (Racecafers know, but the average newspaper reader probably wonders given that Winston is supposedly throwing money at the industry).

I'm pretty sure Mali Peter was Michael (Staky) Marinovich's. He was an owner trainer .. big punter. Used to have fish business. Wouldn't be surprised if the 1st leg Michael was also his. If you remember, he was the guy that brought Bob Skelton up from the South Island to ride at Pukekohe. He swore Bob to silence & not say a word. He punted his horse Persian Star, but it ran second. But they won the next with a horse called Computer. I remember I won a race for him at New Plymouth on a horse called Easter Joy. He gave me a movie ticket for a sling. Don't know if I used it or not.

    For what its worth....

I can only guess that Lindsay Perigo was referencing from the problems that were hitting the shores of Europe/Britain .. as a result of the migrant refugee crisis from Syria. He clearly see's the problem arising from the massive influx of refugees... albeit those deceptively claiming to be refugees. The problem is in the Open-Border Policy that the EU aligns with... hence part of the reason why many British citizens voted out of Brexit... But alas.. there are those in high places wishing not to Brexit... The People Voted for Brexit and the powers that be toy with the peoples Vote.... The English Patriots will not have their voice silenced!!! along comes the Tommy Robinson arrest.. which is symbolic of the Brexit issue.. and people are awoken to their reality!! God Bless the movement of Tommy Robinson!!

    For what its worth....

I believe Tommy Robinson is not his actual real name... but the name he uses for his you tube channel... unsure... but i think i read it somewhere but it has become a household name in the UK now as a result of the Politicians pandering towards the diversity Narrative A person explained the Whole Toimmy Robinson Protest is about a whole lot of issues.. pedophilia, Child grooming, freedom of speech, loss of their culture, islamic invasion, neglecting the care/security of its citizens,Brexit and the failures of the politicians doing whats right for its citizens.. summed up as the Straw that broke the camels back!! The English people have simply had enough of their politicians and their lack of Duty and care towards their country and countryman!!
