The descriptions of Black Caviar and her 25 race career; his uncensored thoughts about Terry Bailey and Des Gleeson,The Integrity Services Division of Racing Victoria:Lee Freedman and Danny O'Brien; Lidari, Dissident, Typhoon Tracy, Manighar. I had no idea how highly he rated Linda Meech ! Quote from his book co written with Trevor Marshallsea. " Not a bad Trainer;not a bad bloke " This is a bloody marvellous read about a very very courageous man.

    JESS SMITH

Since Jess Smith joined HRNZ I notice there is a bit more going on. She appears to be trying to increase the ownership base with more info on ownership and how to get into it, and hopefully reaching beyond normal horse racing people.. This is a positive and much needed strategy. Great to see people with drive and enthusiasm.

  4. Mate 1.2 mill over 10 races. Not enough in my world. Elite races and days such as this deserve more. You are a dreamer thinking that amount is massive. Get the one track mind on " punting "and kick it for touch mate. Its starting to bore/ boor most of us. If one of our horses wins at Cambridge I will personally buy you some football boots to practice kicking the " punting mind "into touch.

    Dumb betting question.

FF-win is final field (fixed odds) S-win is tote. I know other novice punters who have been confused by this on the tab.co.nz. Not sure why they wouldn't more clearly define it like every other bookmaker website.

  7. What agreat hero on the dirt track . He was such a great guy that he convinced us at hutt park to allow an evening of speedway on our track back in the early 90s. Being desperate for funds we agreed with his assurance of muffled bikes, special tyres to avoid any track damage and a big profit. Ivan was not riding himself but we proceeded because of his charisma. on the night I think noise control were run off their feet all over Wellington and Hutt ! On the sunday the track looked like a mini grand canyon with ruts about a sulky wheel deep.! We were racing in a week so Ron Cunningham and writer got heavy machinery from local contractors free as long as we woulddrive them. I had a 5 minute instruction on a large Roller and Ron was grading .After a days hard work we had track ready to race some horsemen even commented on how the track seemed to have been improved. Suffice to say it was a one off for Hutt Park.!

Jess is doing a great job - worked alongside her at Methven yesterday for the owners day and she is certainly doing all she can to promote ownership. Nice to be able to send our latest syndicate opportunity out through HRNZ as it only goes to people who request info and that isn't "advertising". The approved syndicator route is too hard. I have a Muscle Hill filly and two full brothers in blood to Dark Horse - flick Jess an email so she can send to you :-)

  12. Suspect he will see through that BS simply because of his vast experience. They will blather the corporate speak and he will cut through it(maybe not directly with them but certainly in his report to Winston. The big question is how much credibility will Winston give Messara's report and how much sway will his officials (Glenda and John) have to moderate his actions. I cannot wait for Messara to report and even if a lot of small Club's and courses go by the wayside(us included) this is the best news for NZ racing in years and years in my opinion. The only thing to rival it would be a Winx being developed here and the owners refusing to sell.

  13. This morning's NZ Herald devoted 40 column centimetres to horse racing. It was all about the most famous horse race in the world with an estimated audience of 600,000, as they reported. So, think back to last Saturday when the TAB had betting on five races from Aintree. The sixth race was the Grand National. You got it! They did not offer betting on the world's most famous horse race. Somebody has to apply a blow torch to the rectal area of TAB management. This is totally unbelievable. Their argument, which is as weak as urine, will be that they had more than 24 starters. For God's sake; they have spent huge sums developing a fixed odds system that can accommodate a field size of up to 200 starters, or even more. Look at the golf betting. Okay, they could not accommodate quinella or trifecta betting with a field in excess of 24. Just go win and place. Here was a great opportunity to boost the industry's income and it was let go.

Further, they provide a large economic benefit to the country: Quote. But all that seems to be moot. I’d love to see how collapsing this industry without replacing the huge revenues is going to help anyone long term. This shows the lunacy of the gas decision. Killing the strongest and best performing sector with the highest wages and replacing it with McJobs in tourism or hospitality seems rather myopic. The Greens and their Greenpeace mates have done a snow job on Ardern here....Winston not very happy apparently.....

  29. Not sure it's a great appointment. Breeders should be outlawed from administration. He will favour the galloping code, want to introduce greater allowances and more races for fillies/mares and will introduce payments to breeders from all racing stake money. Lets wait and see.

  30. I didn't realise so many of you Harness/Racing guys cared about the Nitball ! It's always the coaches fault. Sacking coaches hasn't helped the Auckland Blues ! Aussie won't be too happy either re their result . It was obvious this coach was wrong from the outset ,just like it was with NZ Cricket coach Mike Hesson ...maybe he's been lucky with the cattle he has !

  31. Fantastic to see a Deep Impact horse coming to NZ. (He is interesting in that as a 2&3 year old it looks like he was trained as a stayer --being place at 1800 and 2000m but as a 5&6 year old he was winning 1400-1600m group races.) Arrowfield had great success at the recent Easter sales with their yearling by Japanese sires. So best of luck to Rich Hill.

  32. Is it not possibly a bit short sighted to think that the punting on the day should fund it all. For mine you need these premier days attract punters to the sport it’s a long game not a short one.

  33. Randwick had ONE race yesterday for $4 mill. Hardly think that 1.2. mill spread over 10 races is massive. Some of the stake will be made up of turnover the rest maybe some sponsorship and then then rest out of reserves. You need premium days in all sports and you will find MOST will not make money or even break even on the day or event eg. Olympics/Commonwealth Games, Rugby Test matches, Cricket Tests etc. These days are needed for the average athlete/horse to have a goal to aim for. The best will get to their goal. Thats the way it is and should be. Unless you want every horse running around for the same money every time Brodie there will always be premium days that have to be subsidized. I personally think that $1.2 mill is way too little for what is promoted as one of the elite days of the year where the best of young and rising stars are on show.

I actually like the new format alot more spacious and easier to read .Also the race synopsis is a nice add on . Not sure why they have a Turf Digest selection each race though when it’s a Best Bets.Anyway overall a thumbs up from this corner.

  36. I get the impression that like the celebrated "Donald" Messara is going to drain the swamp on Jackson Street. But he will find that the swamp is run by determined ugly critters, and those critters will fight tooth and nail to get Messara's report ignored. Those ugly critters do little for NZ racing but they are a formidable foe. Good luck John. It is now 37 years since John tried to buy a NZ breeding outfit, but the politicians and misguided pressure groups thwarted that bid. That failed bid gave the then young Messara a great lesson in the filthy behind the scenes machinations of NZ politics.

    New Best Bets Layout

It's a form guide, not a property register. Given the large and increasing number of syndicated horses and multiple syndicates owning horses, the pressure on (limited) print space is high. I'd rather see abbreviated (or no) ownership details than abbreviated form analysis. Just saying...and no need for you to be rude!

  39. Go back and read a recent article in the Informant which set out John Messiahs view of NZ racing and the direction we should take. The headline read 'start with a blank piece of paper" and create a Racing Act relative to these times and technology. Codes wise he favoured separate administrations controlling their own destiny and not a collective. It was a very thought provoking and constructive interview from an administrator with a proven track record. Read it.

  41. And did I even mention that we had to pay for our own because little Campbell at NZTR went dog and wouldn't support our application to Winnie's Racing Safety Development Fund? Campbell was great when it came to poking his oar into how we run the club but when it came time to actually do something useful and helpful little Campbell was nowhere to be found.

Green party gangster deals do not develop new technologies Credit: BoomSlang Since our government announced that offshore hydrocarbons are off limits, I have found myself in a confused state due to the sheer enormity of this debacle and the breadth and depth of the short, medium and long-term impacts. I was flummoxed and speechless. My brief history in this field is as follows: I have had a level of involvement in the oil and gas sector from 1987 to 2012. This has included being a supplier and contractor to New Zealand oil and gas projects such as Kupe, Waihapa, Kauri, Cheal, McKee, Radnor and Pohokura, as well as projects in Western Australia, Indonesia, Singapore, West Africa, Brazil and various renewable biogas projects in Europe. I have always been enthusiastic about alternative fuels and part of our business from 1985 to 1988 was installing CNG and LPG stations in the North Island. I had several vehicles running on dedicated natural gas. As far as I am concerned a vehicle running on natural gas is as clean as we can currently get, including all of the hybrid and electric options with long tailpipes. We also developed and built on existing technology for the purification of biogas from landfill gas, effluent gas and biomethane from digestors. In 2010 we were commissioning the largest plant of this type in the world in Germany. We also received the Air New Zealand export deal of the year award for building gas compressors for a Finnish company delivered to Brazil to convert three oil-fired power stations to natural gas. The majority shareholder of the company until 2012 was committed to the development of biogas above all else. He would openly say to me (and others) that the company would spend profits from oil and gas projects to further develop biogas technologies. It is with this type of dedication to a cause that new technologies are developed to better the world, and not by Green party gangster-style coalition deals. We walked the walk. After some reflection I think that the single biggest issue here is that the international oil and gas business community and all the big players talk to each other even when in cut-throat competition. Individuals also move around the world to new jobs all the time, as well as joint venture partnerships etc. They will now see New Zealand as an unstable political environment and they will all stay well away, effective immediately. Project spans of 25 years to life are normal. Fifteen-year operating and maintenance contracts are not unusual. One example is the 15-year Modec contract at Maari field in Taranaki, which started in 2013. If we were barely on the map before, we have now been erased for a long, long time. Thanks to the Green gangsters’ deal with the government, New Zealand is now off limits. Some will say ‘but these companies do business all over the world.’ Sure, but long-term corrupt governments can be very stable. They can do business with these countries, pay royalties and all is well. It is very clear that our government are either hell-bent on destroying New Zealand businesses and capability or they are over a Green barrel. I suspect the latter. I can think of some obvious immediate consequences. Recent surveys for offshore prospects: this has all been paid for over a period of time and would have cost several million dollars. I seem to remember that the vessel was contracted from Petrobras, Brazil. Very competent in deep water. They will have been paid, but who is out of pocket? That money is now a loss, not an investment. This will be known worldwide by now. The data will be on file but will be irrelevant with new technology whenever someone goes back for another look. This is a technology game and Moores law applies at all levels of this game. Any project that gets the green light after test wells have been flow tested to get gas and oil composition data will be another five to seven years away before first oil on or first gas on for production. As far as I am aware there are no projects getting close to this stage; there is no current offshore drilling. If there was an instruction from the government to ‘get some oil and gas now’ the answer would be ‘Sure, we will turn the tap on in approximately ten years all going well.’ New Zealand no longer has security of energy supply. Even to build import terminals for LNG would take five years. Forget on shore: there is nothing substantial that could replace Kapuni and Maui Engineering companies in Taranaki. All of the directly involved companies have always lived in a very volatile business environment. They have done well to stay in business at all since international exploration stopped in 2008. When things started again in around 2012 it did not really translate to much work for New Zealand companies. They continue to exist on local upgrade work and some overseas consulting. I am not sure how much metal bashing is going on, but it will be subsistence work to keep the doors open and the crews employed. There will be no profit. That can only last so long and now another kick in the guts will see staff heading overseas. And guess what? The best ones go first and they are the last ones to come back, for obvious reasons. We will lose a generation of productive workers in that region. Our government come out with suggestions like redeploy, retrain and move into new business areas. Private companies like the clever bastards in Taranaki are good at this already and they don’t need condescending fools in Wellington to tell them. One example is Fitzroy Engineering. Some years ago they opened a division building aluminium superyachts. The staff could be welding coded steel pipes one week and then be welding aluminium hulls the next. Very different, but it could be done. The same for instrument fitters, electricians – you name it. It’s another very volatile business area with long project gestation periods, but they built some fabulous boats. My conclusion is that this policy from our government is an unmitigated disaster. We could all list out dozens of knock-on effects and consequences. The sad fact is that they have just disembowelled a whole region for the Greens that live in a fantasy world. This will then affect the whole country in a negative way. I am no longer involved in oil and gas so do not have any vested interests (apart from many friends) but I can now say that this coalition government have just shown an unprecedented level of stupidity. If they weren’t so pathetically stupid it would be treason. They clearly have no knowledge of what they have done. The list of knock-on effects and unintended consequences would take a week to list, let alone expand on and explain. This is a new era of stupid. My head is still spinning. by Stacey Hoggard
