    JESS SMITH

Since Jess Smith joined HRNZ I notice there is a bit more going on. She appears to be trying to increase the ownership base with more info on ownership and how to get into it, and hopefully reaching beyond normal horse racing people.. This is a positive and much needed strategy. Great to see people with drive and enthusiasm.

    Dumb betting question.

FF-win is final field (fixed odds) S-win is tote. I know other novice punters who have been confused by this on the tab.co.nz. Not sure why they wouldn't more clearly define it like every other bookmaker website.

    JESS SMITH

Jess is doing a great job - worked alongside her at Methven yesterday for the owners day and she is certainly doing all she can to promote ownership. Nice to be able to send our latest syndicate opportunity out through HRNZ as it only goes to people who request info and that isn't "advertising". The approved syndicator route is too hard. I have a Muscle Hill filly and two full brothers in blood to Dark Horse - flick Jess an email so she can send to you :-)

    Fun and Games

Suspect he will see through that BS simply because of his vast experience. They will blather the corporate speak and he will cut through it(maybe not directly with them but certainly in his report to Winston. The big question is how much credibility will Winston give Messara's report and how much sway will his officials (Glenda and John) have to moderate his actions. I cannot wait for Messara to report and even if a lot of small Club's and courses go by the wayside(us included) this is the best news for NZ racing in years and years in my opinion. The only thing to rival it would be a Winx being developed here and the owners refusing to sell.

She was on air this afternoon and referred to herself as Emily Bosson. So lets leave it that as anything else is none of our business.

    Dumb betting question.

FF-Win you get that price and it will not change S-Win that price can change up and down all the time until race closes.

Not sure it's a great appointment. Breeders should be outlawed from administration. He will favour the galloping code, want to introduce greater allowances and more races for fillies/mares and will introduce payments to breeders from all racing stake money. Lets wait and see.

    New Zealand Netball

I didn't realise so many of you Harness/Racing guys cared about the Nitball ! It's always the coaches fault. Sacking coaches hasn't helped the Auckland Blues ! Aussie won't be too happy either re their result . It was obvious this coach was wrong from the outset ,just like it was with NZ Cricket coach Mike Hesson ...maybe he's been lucky with the cattle he has !

    Power To Queensland

Fantastic to see a Deep Impact horse coming to NZ. (He is interesting in that as a 2&3 year old it looks like he was trained as a stayer --being place at 1800 and 2000m but as a 5&6 year old he was winning 1400-1600m group races.) Arrowfield had great success at the recent Easter sales with their yearling by Japanese sires. So best of luck to Rich Hill.

Is it not possibly a bit short sighted to think that the punting on the day should fund it all. For mine you need these premier days attract punters to the sport it’s a long game not a short one.

Randwick had ONE race yesterday for $4 mill. Hardly think that 1.2. mill spread over 10 races is massive. Some of the stake will be made up of turnover the rest maybe some sponsorship and then then rest out of reserves. You need premium days in all sports and you will find MOST will not make money or even break even on the day or event eg. Olympics/Commonwealth Games, Rugby Test matches, Cricket Tests etc. These days are needed for the average athlete/horse to have a goal to aim for. The best will get to their goal. Thats the way it is and should be. Unless you want every horse running around for the same money every time Brodie there will always be premium days that have to be subsidized. I personally think that $1.2 mill is way too little for what is promoted as one of the elite days of the year where the best of young and rising stars are on show.

    Power To Queensland

Yep at this rate I am not even going to imagine what CS will look like in 5 years but it seems there is an influence coming from somewhere....good luck to the people who pounced on Power...he will do very, very well in Qld. One of my mares that I am extracting from NZ will be going to him.

    New Best Bets Layout

I actually like the new format alot more spacious and easier to read .Also the race synopsis is a nice add on . Not sure why they have a Turf Digest selection each race though when it’s a Best Bets.Anyway overall a thumbs up from this corner.

I get the impression that like the celebrated "Donald" Messara is going to drain the swamp on Jackson Street. But he will find that the swamp is run by determined ugly critters, and those critters will fight tooth and nail to get Messara's report ignored. Those ugly critters do little for NZ racing but they are a formidable foe. Good luck John. It is now 37 years since John tried to buy a NZ breeding outfit, but the politicians and misguided pressure groups thwarted that bid. That failed bid gave the then young Messara a great lesson in the filthy behind the scenes machinations of NZ politics.

there might just be a few people within the NZ racing industry, currently on huge salaries doing involuntary butt clenching exercises at this news.

    New Best Bets Layout

It's a form guide, not a property register. Given the large and increasing number of syndicated horses and multiple syndicates owning horses, the pressure on (limited) print space is high. I'd rather see abbreviated (or no) ownership details than abbreviated form analysis. Just saying...and no need for you to be rude!

    John Allen's latest "conversations"....

Go back and read a recent article in the Informant which set out John Messiahs view of NZ racing and the direction we should take. The headline read 'start with a blank piece of paper" and create a Racing Act relative to these times and technology. Codes wise he favoured separate administrations controlling their own destiny and not a collective. It was a very thought provoking and constructive interview from an administrator with a proven track record. Read it.

And did I even mention that we had to pay for our own because little Campbell at NZTR went dog and wouldn't support our application to Winnie's Racing Safety Development Fund? Campbell was great when it came to poking his oar into how we run the club but when it came time to actually do something useful and helpful little Campbell was nowhere to be found.
