I don't see it as greed. I see it as resuscitation. Cambridge every second year is especially uninviting, but even Ashburton every alternate year doesn't seem to generate the interest it once did. The Aussie raiders have never turned up in numbers, and some of the top NZ contenders seem to be skipping it in the last season or two. It needs a CTRL ALT DELETE. A reboot.3 points

Go back and read a recent article in the Informant which set out John Messiahs view of NZ racing and the direction we should take. The headline read 'start with a blank piece of paper" and create a Racing Act relative to these times and technology. Codes wise he favoured separate administrations controlling their own destiny and not a collective. It was a very thought provoking and constructive interview from an administrator with a proven track record. Read it.3 points

I get the impression that like the celebrated "Donald" Messara is going to drain the swamp on Jackson Street. But he will find that the swamp is run by determined ugly critters, and those critters will fight tooth and nail to get Messara's report ignored. Those ugly critters do little for NZ racing but they are a formidable foe. Good luck John. It is now 37 years since John tried to buy a NZ breeding outfit, but the politicians and misguided pressure groups thwarted that bid. That failed bid gave the then young Messara a great lesson in the filthy behind the scenes machinations of2 points -

Hi Insider, Just back from a good, but wet night, at Alexandra Park. Glad I had taken my umbrella, as we managed to be lucky enough to win a race, and it was hosing down. Dennis Ryan had the guts to keep The Informant as a Privately owned NZ Thoroughbred /Trotting publication. Didnt he? Along with Gus and others, Stretch, the Matamata lad, established a News/opinion Platform for the likes of Brian de Lore. Brian de Lore has never been fightened to take on Thoroughbred issues and conflict of interest. Gary Chittick was an RIB member when a 2kg Fillies allowance came into NZ Racing. ( Studs were retaining their filly families and saw a huge advantage for them when they raced them). De lore was against the allowances for females2 points -

Was that really necessary Insider? I made a harmless suggestion regarding your comp (that people should take a $1 multi) and now you're resorting to this childish nonsense. Nimue was a very special filly - her 1000 Guineas and Bayer Classic wins will be among the better wins in those two races. The reason she didn't do anything beyond three years of age is that she injured herself and didn't race beyond her 3yo season. Altitude didn't race beyond three years of age either but doesn't make him a lesser horse. and yes she was a poor broodmare, but there have been many a good mare on2 points -

Haven't seen the new format yet, but I'm not fussed about whether owners names are included. When I buy a Best Bets, I buy it for the form - I don't care who owns a horse - if I wanted to know I'd look it up online. I'm an owner and yes I pay to put on the show but couldn't care less if my name is in the Best Bets. if they're constrained for space then happy for them to drop my name.2 points

It was never just a form guide. That's what it has been demoted to....some sleazy nonsense irrelevant publication that appeals to 1500 people out of 350,000. It used to be the bible that used to provide a race goer (note race goer not betting person) with all the relevant information for an entertainment median called racing. It should be a form guide that needs to have appeal to as wider an audience as possible. Have you ever wondered why the industry continues to diminish in relevance as the robots continue in their quest to make an industry all about betting? It doesn't work and the r1 point -

There are an additional 25% more pages.... how can it make the breakeven mark as was promised? I hear that weekly sales are now down between 1000-1500 copies. Where are the owners names? A very important factor. The owners put the show on. Who the hell has made this dumb decision? Where's the consultation process? Where's the data that shows this is acceptable. I also thought that the concept was to have a smaller pocket book type publication. I saw papers saying this was to be a key feature. This publication is wider, taller and thicker. Geez Wellington....what's the s1 point -

Does it not concern you that Messara is only a Gallops man. Also, have the Ozzies been of great assistance to NZ racing when put in postions of authority? Appointing him to do the review as well as mentioning the 2003 Racing act in the same Pres release should be sending alarm bells to both Standardbred and Greyhound codes. I'll stick my neck out now and say that in time its going to be a free for all with each code going there own way and the NZRB being downsized and not running the abysmal show they are now with their monopoly.1 point -

Firstly, the fucking ball tampering underarm sandpaper artists are at it again, they’ve had the sprinklers on every day this week, presumably for that very good NZ bred mare who’s trained by the very good NZer, Chris Waller. But let me tell you this. The Australian media are arrogant, borderline smug about her chances here, and pride comes before a fall. Bowman rides her like a drunk on a pushbike anyway, so she’s going to travel 30m further than the rest of them. You might be able to do that on wet tracks against second rate horses but this ain’t wet, and these horses against h1 point -

Thanks Neil for your sage advice as always. As a punter I share your sentiments wholeheartedly. Black Kirrama reacted to NeilD for a topic
The point is some would have backed Ozil if the heat was visible, won good money and re-invested, and that is the name of the game isn't it- turnover. Instead, Trackside viewers find out a few minutes before the race it has gone ok in the Jumpouts, a little too late for those invested in the early quaddie. More punters get frustrated with the lack of basic information and look elsewhere to invest their spare money. Melbourne have got their act together here with updated vision of jumpouts. The philosophy should be ' If the information can give punters an excuse to invest, then find a way to sh1 point -

Neil your only concern is the punters as that’s your thing. Those of us that pay all the costs for producing the horses to bet on appreciate jumpouts as they are usually local so less travelling and cheaper than official trials .Also they are such a great tool in teaching horses about the starting gates in a reasonably relaxed environment.1 point -

Black Kirrama reacted to Just Looking for a topic
I would disagree - the Hastings and Waipukurau Jumpouts are very in-house, done out of caddy gates in the case of Waipukurau that serve their purpose and but are sometimes outside horses, but normally just Waipukurau and Hastings trained The gates and day are run by the local committee who have given up work time to volunteer to help. Indeed giving back to the racing industry, because they have something lacking in racing - passion Several heats can have three horses from one stable - only 4 horse heats - and a variance of riders. Coming from a different philosophy (not theory or system) and Encouraged by some international interest to my TBL pedigree blogging posts www.thethoroughbredlink.com , thought it was high-time to put it down here! Its primed upon importance of maternal families and engaging the female family tables so it might be of interest to a few who apply these for breeding in their own right. i.e. not commercial sale. Food for thought and all that. Enjoy. Also on FB - The Thoroughbred Link. Cheers.1 point
