    Thats shocking.

  2. the only consensus is that there are a number of people being paid ( note I did not say earning ) massive salaries - and they are not contributing to the benefit of the Racing industry.

  3. There are some real wankers in this world - especially the ones that voted for NZF and the ones that think that WP is the Racing Industry saviour. The hero folk are those that voted him out of office in his electorate - they must feel betrayed now that he slunk his way into the DP's chair.

  4. Here's an example of innovation and ideas Winnie the Poo. Put a blow torch to NZRB/NZTR . Many say that the organisation has overseen the complete deterioration of the NZ Racing landscape. Take Breeders and Sales out and only sellers have had a return. The games stuffed in NZ and all he comes up with, despite all the "Policy Rubbish" of MZ First, is "Racing has to be innovative and have more ideas!". Did he say this "before" he entered the Pencarrow Marque or after lunch and a few Sav Blancs? He's had months in Office and had the perfect chance and audience to announce what he and his "Govt by Stealth" were going to do over the next 12 months. Or, should I say he did announce what they were going to do? SFA. Nothing. Plenty of room in Oz for the progressive young trainers and stable staff of NZ Racing. Follow the exodus.

  5. Well Peters stuck it up all those racing idiots who voted for him, got elected on the back of promises galore and backed out of shit loads already. Delivered nothing as most of us thought.

    DId anyone hear?

Thanks Porky and Van - and just for the record - I'm not critical of George S if this is what was said - if anything I find it refreshing that someone in that position comes close to saying it how they see it rather than paying the piper with the rest of the sycophants ...

  8. With the past weekends racing, harness & gallops, I cant help but thinking the industry has missed a trick when it comes to promotion. We need to remember it is very much a people’s game as well as the horses. We’ve had the Karaka Millions and forthcoming sales as the main focus to try appeal to the general public, but in the country we’ve had two superstars of the game in Hugh Bowman, voted best jockey in the world, & Hall of Farmer David Miller. How many times will that happen? Things have definitely picked up from HRNZ when it’s comes to news since Jess Smith has been there, but I would’ve like to have seen some more promotion from the powers that be around these guys, whether it the respective codes or the NZRB, as they went about their business and showing us their deftly skills. David Miller was obviously excited about competing on grass for the first time, and for him to go out first up and deliver a $19 winner, well, imagine the build up and subsequent pay off for all the non race goers as he rolled home. I know how hard it is to get into that mainstream media space, but it would’ve been worth a big push. Add to that , two former world champion drivers in Mark Jones & Dexter Dunn, a promoters dream. I’m sure any other sports would salivate at that sort of prospect. The guys were here, whether we maximised them as much as we could’ve, I don’t know. My 10c worth.

    Closing down NZ tracks

Quite. And to drag the content of another discussion here, the expectation that an opening address from W.P indicated an 'announcement' - I was told that such was imminent - has left many feeling underwhelmed, to say the least. All that was indicated was that an allweather would be desirable. Successive Ministers have said ' racing, get your house in order, we can't help if you don't ' ....and we consistently do nothing to help ourselves. What, exactly. has the closing of tracks [ alluded to by Jess ] achieved for the industry overall ? How does the larger racing fraternity benefit by the removal of a volunteer-managed community asset? An experienced former administrator told me that, in his time, Annette King was the R.M....and he found her obliging and extremely competent. But in the end, she threw her hands in the air and said to him ' I give up, you lot are impossible to deal with.' There are plenty with opinions as to how to 'fix' things, but so many are motivated by self interest, and there is still no consensus - about anything.

  10. True and I don't think it really matters. Government doesn't generally give handouts to industries that may be struggling from time to time. I wasn't there but it sounds like Peters has basically said that racing needs to sort out its own s%^t, the same thing Carter told it 10 years ago after Peters previous wasted largesse had ended or gone into place.. So, I think participants and leadership need to focus on doing that instead of hanging out waiting for some additional handout from outside the industry to rescue them.

    Karaka Sale Complex

They said at the start of the sales tonight that it is 30 years since the first sale at Karaka. Amazing. I think the fact that it still looks quite new and certainly has not dated in architectural terms, shows how good the architects were and how good a job Micheal Floyd ( Wrightsons bloodstock boss at the time) and his team did with the organisation of getting the complex built. Also NZB have obviously done a great job with it's up keep. It was a rather controversial move, at the time, to go from Trentham to Karaka but no would argue now that it was timely and the right thing to do.

  14. Trump I have never voted NZF nor do I think Winston is the Racing Industry saviour. Spit out your sour grapes and admit that at least he has far more knowledge of the Racing Industry than the two Racing Ministers we had under the nine year Tory Junta.

  17. Well not shocked of this appointee at all. I have had dealings with Mario over his time on the board. He is moulded very well. As when the vote of no confidence when through the first time on a board member he left the club reps hanging for a few hours to seek legal opinion so the clubs vote could sway in boards favour, must to his degust on return he was wrong, No apology at all. Shado Lans corruption he was also involved. Hope he changes his stripes or I can see very little changes for us LP’S.

I think if WP said we will be honouring all the recommendations that were in our racing policy most people would be content.Instead we got a speech on what we already know and nothing of substance. Fake news alright.
    1 point
  35. He is the antipodean CNN--purveyor of fake news. And talking about news, TV3 had a link to Karaka and crossed a couple of times but rather than be a good advertisement we got some "kid" reporters without a clue labelling Avantage a "he" (last time I looked it was a filly), owned by David Ellis (the syndicate had better check) and the girl reporter revealing that Winston alluded to tax relief for the industry which she disingenuously decided was a tax break for the rich! Winston will lap up the attention and deliver nothing but a lesson on introspection--gullibility at it's finest.

Bottom line - Govt is not a benevolent society. When it comes to racing - they'll put money in where they can see a return. Otherwise - we're on our own. And it's hard to argue with that actually ...

  41. Does it really matter that much.... its a good story it promotes racing and hopefully he will get more involved by pushing the fun of horse ownership.... as I said those type of scenes with that many people involved in sharing horse ownership can only be good for racing.

  48. That's the crux of the whole discussion, surely - abandonments and crap surfaces deter punters and stakeholders alike. No-one is refuting the notion that an alternative surface, be it a polytrack, American-style dirt or a Strathayr, would save on the above - but will the installation of same produce increased revenue? Because we are already 20 mill up the gurgler through the borrowing to increase stakes, without the investment to put one or more of these tracks in...and we'll need to increase turnover exponentially to cover the costs inherent. I just don't see where that much increased turnover is coming from, hope I'm wrong though.

  49. What is wrong with you morons ? What the hell has National got to do with it ?? We just need the Racing Industry going forward and not stagnating. If Peters can do that, then kudos to him.
    1 point
  50. Is that what your beloved National were proposing! NO? Anything will be better than what they did for the last nine years, so don't try and create something that has no hope of being announced.
