Stark reality of NZ racing
Memphis2 and 2 others reacted to Koriokaramea for a topic
As if anyone needed reminding of the stark variance between New Zealand and Australian racing. Today, Saturday, the major racing day of the week (the day I'm not at work), New Zealand's largest city Auckland (pop. 2 million), race meeting at Ellerslie, with a mere 6 races. We look at Australia this weekend where the headline acts include Chautauqua, Hartnell, Black Heart Bart, Bonneval. By comparison in New Zealand the NZ Herald's Mike Dillon yesterday reported the headline act as going to be the brave but very limited one-paced Smedley, who promptly took umbrage at any suggestion it would be headlining anything, and scratched itself.3 points -

The race Dillo selected in is The Mitchelson.....it was a decent race in its day...sadly today's event doesn't have a single open class horse in it, yet the bumbling fools in Petone keep telling us they've got this game sorted. I understand the weather issues and the impact that has on field size, but if other sports can cope ( Eden Park seems fine ), and this problem has been widely discussed here so it's not a new issue, then surely the industry must take some responsibility for what's really a bit of a farce raceday today at Ellerslie.2 points -
Parish rides a treble at Benalla (Victoria)
hedley and one other reacted to Black Kirrama for a topic
Cory Parish continues to impress, doesnt he ?His first ever treble. R3 Valac R6 Red is The Rose R9 WallStreet Wolf. All three were for Sir David Hayes and his Training partners. Tomorrow, Cory travels to Randwick to ride the rating 94 SNITZSON in The Epsom for Sir David.50.5kg. I bet Cory is not one "ounce" over the carded weight. With Egg Tart scratched,Snitzon could make a very good quin or Tri with Happy Clapper and Foxplay. If Snitzson wins, Parish would beat the wonderful Jason Collett to a Group One win. (Disclaimer : I have never met Cory Parish or his mother: I have never played Euchre with ( Sir)David Hayes. I have never been able to afford a Snitzel yearling. I have met Ciaron Maher. I admire his amazing contributions to racing. Hopefully come May 2018 ( when Maher gets his licence back) Parish will be well recognised in Victoria will link with his stable.2 points -

As I said, I looked at some of the data from the weather stations we gather data off in the area. I attached the position of those weather stations in my previous post. I have to wonder what technology is being used to provide the precipitation data. And of course there are no references to the wind direction, speed and temperature which naturally materially changes the game. But based on the figures that you have provided us with, firstly, there are differences in the amounts of precipitation from the "official NZTR data" and 16 weather stations that surround the track's region. So let's set that aside for the moment. The precipitation that you have indicated once more promotes more questions than it provides answers. In fact I'm starting to smell a rat because the logic doesn't seem to fit. And before I explain this, in your previous post let me clear something up. We CAN provide weather forecasts that are 83% accurate 10 days out, 91% accurate 3 days out and 97% accurate 1 day out. It's correlated data that results from artificial intelligence derived from historic statistical trends by bench marking multiple weather station's data and then correlating it to a known point through triangulation. What I said before is that I couldn't influence the weather but I can report on it. Whyistand....you need to read what you are posting more carefully. I can only refer to your posts literally. So to the problem at hand...according to your data, a total of 10.2mm of rain was had over 8 days. In addition 14mm was irrigated 6 days before the event. One day before the event the track was a dead 5. On the Tuesday 19th in the morning the track was a Good 3 - perfect track for me. They thought it was too firm so they watered the track The 14mm of irrigation and 1mm of natural rain turned the track from a Good 3 to a Dead 4 on Wednesday 20th at 9.00am. So the track changed 1 point. So on Thursday morning 9.07am it was recorded that 0.2mm of rain had fallen during Wednesday night but although it had been raining on and off, the track had stayed the same all day as the last recording was taken at 4.45pm. The track was still rated a Dead 4. During Thursday night it rained 8mm and at 8.45am Friday 22nd the track was re-rated to a Dead 6 (a deterioration of 2 points). It was fine all day and overcast on the Friday where at 4.20pm the track was re-rated back to a Dead 5....an improvement of 1 point During Friday night only 7mm of rain fell and at 6.59am on Saturday 23rd the track was rated Slow 9....a deterioration of 4 points Hopefully you're following this because this doesn't make sense at all. Look at the logic and tell me what's wrong with this picture. On logic, IF the previous data is accurate, the track should have at worst changed 2 points (commensurate to the Thursday night rain of 8mm). But that didn't happen. My real question is that with a very good weather forecast.....and you can't tell me it was going to be a skating rink....I don't buy into that now the I've seen the data....could this whole debacle have been avoided? My very quick answer is yes and its about time the technology was put into place.2 points -

Hi Whyisit I followed the track conditions and the updates on NZTR every day that week (and the week prior to that I was looking at long range forecasts - it's a bit sad but for big meetings like that or those I have a horse running in I start building up to the day or pondering likely track conditions some way out) As Lloyd points out the deterioration of the track over the last 24 hours does raise questions. So does the fact they irrigated so heavily when rain was possible later in the week. And why 14mm - why not a lesser amount with an option of applying more later in the week if needed ? Bottom line with the rain they had there is no way it should have been slow 9. End of day I'm not after heads rolling or anything like that. But a bit of honesty here that they produced a wet track on a day it should have been in the dead range would be nice. Let me finish by asking you - would they do it again ????2 points -
Hi Peter, happy to post updates for all matches not covered by others. May be out and about so the odd result may be delayed but for the most part should be reasonably up-to-date.2 points

Yes from day one nearly. If I was looking for a rider for my horse I would be picking McEvoy way ahead of Bowman at this stage. Reckon he gassed that favourite last night while McEvoy rode a great race.Big pull in the weights but no one was talking about that pre race. Bowman was before the stewards afterwards so may be an explanation there.1 point

Hey Harewood, I'm helping Peter with some scoring today. Looks like you've got a typo on your race 5 selection. I'm interpreting this as 2 & 5 unless you confirm otherwise. Might be a moot point as 5 is scratched and #1 is a possible sub so you could end up with 1 & 2, but I'm going with 2 & the sub. Cheers1 point

Who's responsible for this?
Black Kirrama reacted to SilverHawk for a topic
Todays NZ Herald has tomorrows Mornington fields, that has no interest to the average NZ punter, but NO Moonee Valley fields tonight, that has two major NZ horses running. Whos responsible for this? Do the NZRB decide what fields are to be shown in NZ National paper? If so, Its no wonder NZ punters dont bet. Its disgraceful.1 point -

And this should also be considered. Hold you hand up and pull your index finger and thumb apart so that the gap equals 24mm or one inch. Then say to yourself, why is it that only one inch over 7 days (it hadn't rained prior to the Tuesday) should make such a difference on the track when 1 day (the Friday) was fine weather. In reality there are only two options available. 1. The data reporting was wrong ......could have been that the surface measuring system (pentrometer) isn't accurate, or the person reading it did it incorrectly, or the technology to record the precipitation was wrong, or the amount irrigated was incorrectly recorded; or 2. The track surface reacts inversely to logic....could be that the management of the surface is so bad that beyond a Dead 5 the track conditions deteriorate exponentially. In this instance data needs to be extracted from the racing surface and then it should be correlated to the environmental data that could influence the changes to the track surface. NZRB and NZTR....this research needs to be done.1 point -

Richmond Tigers vs Adelaide in the Grand Final tomorrow. Richmond haven't got near a Grand Final since forever and their long suffering, fickle fans have poured out from the logs they've been hiding under. I've never liked Richmond as always thought they were soft and just failed to deliver (a bit like the Auckland Warriors or the Auckland Blues). However, two things - 1. They've easily got the best song and 2. Their star is a Kiwi boy. So just for tomorrow I might have to suck it up and say "Go the Mighty Tigers"1 point -

TOM(the other Molloy) reacted to chelseacol for a topic
Whyisit - just accept they made an error of judgement to firstly apply irrigation and more importantly to apply 14mm in one go. As soon as they decided to do those two things they were vulnerable if any rain arrived to a downgrade of the track beyond the dead 4 they were aiming for. It rained (as was forecast) and they produced a track which was slow 9. They stuffed up. Its only reasonable that questions are asked. Col PS - using Ellis as a character witness after his horse won the big race on track conditions which suited it is a nonsense.1 point -

A woman in a hot air balloon realized she was lost. She reduced altitude and spotted a man below. She descended a bit more and shouted: "'Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago but I don't know where I am". The man below replied "You're in a hot air balloon hovering approximately 30 feet above the ground. You're between 40 and 41 degrees north latitude and between 59 and 60 degrees west longitude". "You must be a technician." said the balloonist. "I am" replied the man "how did you know?" "Well," answered the balloonist, "everything you have told me is probably technically correct, but I've no idea what to make of your information and the fact is, I'm still lost. Frankly, you've not been much help at all. If anything, you've delayed my trip with your talk." The man below responded, "You must be in management". "I am" replied the balloonist, "but how did you know?" "Well," said the man "you don't know where you are or where you're going. You have risen to where you are, due to a large quantity of hot air. You made a promise, which you've no idea how to keep, and you expect people beneath you to solve your problems.
