  2. Jimmy, you have to get up to speed mate. They run middle distance races at Auckland every week they are the 527 races. They also have the ability to run distance races which fit into two categories firstly pseudo distance races over 603m and the real deal over 779m. I will excuse you for not knowing this as they only race over the real deal whenever there is a blue moon. Thus you now see the problem, the public love the real deal races yet few training dogs know how to produce them. therefore people do give a rats arse about races that are sprints. There is a push within the industry to provide staying races and that is good, however the dog population seems to be getting weaker and the majority of them are as likely to run 779m as the Greens are likely to win the next election so many share your view that we shoul;d cater for the so called flea's we now find ourselves inundated with. I think this is called a dicotomy. Mikey Ngati Porou

It would be great if one of the racing journalists sat down with Tony, sometime after he has settled back in NZ, and asked him about the differences in training of horses in Japan. After watching the Arrowfield produced doco on the Japanese industry it is clear they do things very differently.

  4. I hope no one replies to this message. There has been too many postings lately that would have been best not sent. I made a huge mistake in attacking the garden 3 weeks ago and those pesky privet trees were maybe too big to have been pulled out by hand. The result has been a disc moving to where it shouldn't be and pressing on a nerve that runs down a leg. This necessitates potent pain killers every few hours and not a lot of sleep. I can't drive and do all the things that makes life fun. I wish I could go back 3 weeks and do one thing differently! When I pulled out of PJ's next comp it was because as the last 3 saturdays have shown, you have to be able to think straight or you let your team mates down. Even on Saturday I was telling Howie how I thought at least Bonniegirl would get me started. He looks at me puzzled and says "you haven't taken Bonniegirl?" Yip I had written the wrong number on my sheet. What I have read on this thread has left me just plain sad. No other word like angry, confused or disappointed conveys my thoughts as much as sad. It was like watching the USA presidential debates, both sides thinking they were right but in most of the rest of the country stood by and just shook their heads. PJ's comps are legendary. Enjoyed by all and even between the combatants there has always been wit and banter. But there is always that line in the sand between humour and well... hurting of feelings. Without the banter then it is just another comp. I often put an entry in the Stabletalk comp. But as good as the scoring is, the last post is just a list of totals and placings. PJ's comps are / were special. I admit to being sceptical of the draft system last year but it turned out one of the best comps. I admit I was wrong. There...said it! PJ stopping the next comp, given the circumstances, is what I would have done too. The precedent of one person spoiling a comp happened a couple of years ago. Person disappeared and things returned to normal. I am not yet classified as old but I remember when you could get on a plane without the checks, metal detectors and list a mile long of things you can't have with you. Then some loonies hijacked or blew up planes. Now the rest of us suffer. When all 5 yo kids walked to school until one nutter kidnaps a child, now everyone drives the children to school and the rest of us queue in traffic. My hope would be that in a few weeks, apart from getting some "nerve shunt" I am waiting for, PJ announces a winter draft comp reboot. All previous posts are ignored and everyone plays nicely. The silent majority (I don't make that category) gets their 4..6 hours of fun on a saturday. Life is meant to have some fun, even if that means watching your horse get beaten on the final step.. again! To all you others, who I see only on the comp threads for all these years as a pseudonym and avatar, but feel I know you, thanks for being there and making my weekends just that little bit better. sincerely Geoff LastOf40

LITTLE RALPHY ON MATHS A teacher asks her class, 'If there are 5 birds sitting on a fence and you shoot one of them, how many will be left?' She calls on little Ralphy. He replies, 'None, they will all fly away with the first gunshot.' The teacher replies, 'The correct answer is 4, but I like your thinking..' Then little RALPHY says, 'I have a question for YOU. There are 3 women sitting on a bench having ice cream: One is delicately licking the sides of the triple scoop of ice cream. The second is gobbling down the top and sucking the cone. The third is biting off the top of the ice cream. Which one is married?' The teacher, blushing a great deal, replied, 'Well, I suppose the one that's gobbled down the top and sucked the cone.' To which Little RALPHY replied, 'The correct answer is 'the one with the wedding ring on,' but I like your thinking.' LITTLE RALPHY ON MATH Little RALPHY returns from school and says he got an F in arithmetic. 'Why?' asks the father? 'The teacher asked 'How much is 2x3,'' I said '6', replies RALPHY. 'But that's right!' says his dad. 'Yeah, but then she asked me 'How much is 3x2?'' 'What's the fucking difference?' asks the father. 'That's what I said!' LITTLE RALPHY ON ENGLISH Little RALPHY goes to school, and the teacher says, 'Today we are going to learn multi-syllable words, class. Does anybody have an example of a multi-syllable word?' RALPHY says 'Mas-tur-bate..' Miss Rogers smiles and says, 'Wow, little RALPHY, that's a mouthful.' Little RALPHY says, 'No, Miss Rogers, you're thinking of a blowjob.' LITTLE RALPHY ON GRAMMAR One day, during lessons on proper grammar, the teacher asked for a show of hands from those who could use the word 'beautiful' in the same sentence twice. First, she called on little Suzie, who responded with, 'My father bought my mother a beautiful dress and she looked beautiful in it..' 'Very good, Suzie,' replied the teacher.. She then called on little Michael. 'My mummy planned a beautiful banquet and it turned out beautifully.' She said, 'Excellent, Michael!' Then the teacher reluctantly called on little RALPHY. 'Last night at the dinner table, my sister told my father that she was pregnant, and he said 'Beautiful, just fucking beautiful!'' LITTLE RALPHY ON GETTING OLDER Little RALPHY was sitting on a park bench munching on one candy bar after another. After the 6th one a man on the bench across from him said, 'Son, you know eating all that candy isn't good for you. It will give you acne, rot your teeth, and make you fat.' Little RALPHY replied, 'My grandfather lived to be 107 years old.' The man asked, 'Did your grandfather eat 6 candy bars at a time?' Little RALPHY answered, 'No, but he minded his own fucking business.'

    Hawera Easter meeting

Stop being a cock BigStuff...gunna bring it up every year? It happened once, the perpetrator was an unknown non greyhound person who is now rightly locked up in prison. The victim was a lovely chap who is a liked and respected member of the greyhound community so why you take the piss and get 'likes' is beyond me,as for results, sadly couldn't make it to Hawera this year but I hope everyone had an awesome weekend...genuine people enjoying greyhound racing the way it used to be.

Have to agree with Ted and Co here, anyone can run a race meeting and attract punters, but the way you attract more punters than your competition is by supplying a better product....and more relevant and reliable information is a part of that superior product. I don't think the NZRB or NZTR care though, otherwise they'd be giving the simplest and most relevant information of all, the horse's racing weight on the day with variations from last start and a rolling last ten start average. It's as easy as the farrier checking their shoes before they're mounted, but the morons can't be bothered doing it.

    joke thread

One afternoon a lawyer was riding in his limousine when he saw two men along the roadside eating grass. Disturbed, he ordered his driver to stop and he got out to investigate. He asked one man, "Why are you eating grass ?" "We don't have any money for food," the poor man replied. "We have to eat grass." "Well, then, you can come with me to my house and I'll feed you," the lawyer said. "But sir, I have a wife and two children with me. They are over there eating grass under that tree." "Bring them along," the lawyer replied. Turning to the second poor man he stated, "You may come with us, also." The other man, in a pitiful voice, then said, "But sir, I also have a wife and six children with me!" "Bring them all as well," the lawyer answered. They all entered the car, which was no easy task, even for a car as large as the limousine. Once under way, one of the poor fellows turned to the lawyer and said, "Sir, you are too kind. Thank you for taking all of us with you." The lawyer replied, "Glad to do it. You'll really love my place. The grass is almost a foot high. "Come on . . . did you really think there was such a thing as a heart-warming lawyer story?Look at Congress -- over 300 Lawyers!!! "Artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity".

Correct Ted. The paucity of information on Singapore and Hong Kong races is another example of their ineptness.

    Valmagne

in regards to valmagne, they obviously know what they are doing, i thought he was absolutely no show in monbets rowe cup, if you look at where he was on the fence you would have written him off and then that fricken huge finish!! he was obviously well set for that, if he had of been in a better position he would have pushed monbet very close, no other horse in the race was making any ground, to me easily the standout run in the race, very hard to start to armchair second guess the trainers, when some of the runs (especially the rowe cup) have been in the best company and performed above what most people expected, im sure if he was in need of a spell, thats what he would get, the race yesterday may have been in weak company but its still a win and near four grand, isnt that just good horse placement? at 1-1 in the betting the punters obviously thought so.

  11. Guess they want to keep tabs on the 25 out of 30 that don't make it guess they all don't get looked after unless they are good! Ridiculous and incorrect post umbrella sounds a bit like an AA comment to me

  12. Who gives a rats a*** whether it's termed a sprint race or not I just think Auckland Greyhound Racing should seriously consider having middle distance races as not all dogs are sprinters and not all dogs are distance dogs, it would make racing at Manukau more interesting for the trainers, owners & punters. Can someone tell me whether it is practical to have middle distance races at Manukau or is in the all too hard basket?

  14. Would certainly be possible as its only technology that puts the markings on the TV screen. The track in Aus I appreciate it most is Melton where the camera is so far off the post it looks like the winning post line is on a sharp angle. It would be great to see at a track like Reefton or Westport where the angle is always deceiving to the eye. Why NZ Harnes or Racing dont employ the latest technology is beyond me unless it costs so much money it eats into their profits. I would love to see all the horses numbers put up on the screen in the position and order they are like in Singapore racing. It must be GPS related and wouldnt cost a fortune I would think. In big fields makes it very easy to track your horse and must be beneficial to new punters who do not know the colours of their horse. There is so much more that racing in NZ could employ to bring racing in line with other countries. Would also love to see TABs have terminals where you put the betslip in by youself and the operator just collects your money and gives the ticket, as they do in Aus. So much faster. If you get it wrong you have to fill another ticket not try and explain to the operator. Could have a separate terminal for those who wish to give bets verbally.

Isn't there a former disgraced NZTR employee now doing the fixed odds? Would he have come up with this idea? There have been a few instances of horses odds that have been "questionable", from when they are released from the barrier!

Club should be congratulated for still running it, we still need to support these races as other wise we have no top end product. If they stop running these races we might aswell sell every horse after it wins a race or two.

    All weather track

Or how about something completely different... We know that people from the city do not frequent the races in the same numbers as those from the country - basically, the competition for the entertainment dollar is too fierce. We know that due to infrastructure and population pressures, it will be increasingly difficult for trainers to bring their horses down the motorways to the main centres. Why don't we sell up the likes of Ellerslie, replace it with a state of the art entertainment complex, with arena-style seating and dining options, above holographic races beamed in from the provinces, who are racing on a brand new purpose-built all-weather track, close to where the horse population resides? The ARC could retain ownership of the new facilities. Makes too much sense I guess

    All weather track

An all weather in the Cambridge or Matamata area purely a racing venue, basic modern facilities with no need for big flashy grandstands or anything, racing there twice a week, say Wednesday and Sunday for Industry days and then leave the Saturdays for feature turf racing at the other venues with your traditional picnic meetings like Thames worked around at those times a year. If the Saturday meeting looks in jeopardy because of weather then transfer to the all weather. Possibly work in with the harness and dog codes and make a track for them as well and have racing there every day.... Not sure who is doing the paying for it though??

Yes you are correct. At least I had his first name and initial right. A long time ago late 70s I think I can well remember the windows that you had to queue up at with small openings, long queues and no bet slips in those days. They used to have the $! and $5 windows and a $50 window. The 1 and 5 were always busy but the 50 just for the "Big" bettors. I always wanted to get in that queue! When you spent a few dollars you got a heap of tickets. I remember one day taking a double at addington. They were exchange doubles then when you just took the first leg and if it won you went back and exchanged it for the second leg. I got the first leg in maybe at 20 to 1 and was very excited. I had the tickets in my pocket and and had to go and have a nervous one. When I went to exchange the tickets, I didnt have them. Panic set in. They had fallen out of my pocket and I had flushed them down the toilet. Anyway I hurriedly went to the main tote and explained I had lost them. They allowed me to select my second leg horses and if they had unclaimed first leg ones would put mine on. As It turned out I missed anyway. Im glad those days are over. Its much easier to loose your money nowadays.
