  1. This is just bloody sickening. It would actually be hilarious if the decisions these clowns are making were not so important to so many people's livelihoods. The problem is you could fit what Glenda Hughes and John Allen know about the gaming industry on the back of a postage stamp, yet they are both experts at corporate speak and at hiding their ignorance. I'd like to ask them both, why on earth would you consider paying an overseas company to manage your fixed odds operation when you already copy the odds almost to the cent of Paddy Power for pre-game markets and Bet365 for in play without paying them a cent. Presumably they KNOW that's how their fixed odds department operates. I've worked in the industry for more than 20 years now and I have NEVER heard of NYX. They sound like one of a million providers for on-line betting solutions, yet these are for small to medium "boutique books", not for a massive organisation like the TAB. Glenda's assertion that these guys are going to help the TAB become market leaders in the industry is ridiculous. The TAB will just be one more copy cat company that is indiscernable from hundreds of others. The market leaders in the gaming industry are managed by shrewd operators who have been working in the industry for years and years. That's who the TAB need calling the shots, not glib Glenda or Postman Pat. I've put out some feelers to find out more about NYX, but to me it has all the hallmarks of the Typhoon deal, i,e not tested and examined by the right people before the deal was done. We've got to get rid of these people who have neither a rudimentary understanding of the industry or any kind of passion for the racing industry, while there is still an industry left to try and save.

  2. We'll probably buy a couple, some lovely families, even in the Festival sale, the thing is, I'm able to get them up and running here, use wonderful facilities for us here, then pick the eyes out of them, take a couple to AUS and use a satellite stable, or send them to a mate [leading trainer] on mates rates? But why? why oh why, we have everything here, always have, we just have poor management and poor stakes, poor infrastructure, and poor future, otherwise nothing would give me greater pleasure than to end my days travelling to and fro race meetings here plying our trade in exchange for respectable pay days.....and employing 2-3 good local people......geezus, how bloody sad is all this.

    NZRS.....

I'm sure we will get to see an exciting group of c1 sprinters out of that bitch. Will certainly add to the depth of a Wanganui Wednesday meeting. I understand completley why he highlighted this particular brood bitch. Best of luck to the connections of this dog as you are going to need it.

  5. It's not about 'stakes', firstly they need to bring back free racing, to bring us into line with most developed countries, then infrastructure, then stakes........get more people into ownerships and then you will deter good people like Paul Belsham and co from leaving the industry.....what a legacy to leave, both CEO's, the carnage of broken people, all because a once proud industry has foundered on the rocks, ''not our fault' is that the cry from the bridge? For Gods sake, something good must come from this meeting, just one resignation would be a start........does anyone really think Karen Z was itching to leave Otaki? her home for how many years? who's the next to leave there?....or anywhere for that matter? you don't expect in your 'golden years' to have to relocate or retire just to justify poor decisions by people on huge, fat salaries. Any other industry would have ousted these people, what makes them a protected species here? How the hell can you front every Monday when the reality is so many good, decent, talented and passionate people are going to struggle to pay their mortgage?........I'm at a loss, if I could understand even a little of what has happened here, well then you could ponder a pathway, or escape route, too many have had to take the escape route.......and all respect and understanding to those souls.

  6. THis latest indulgence by NZ racing board and Glenda is perhaps the stupedist of all far exceeding Stiassney's unresearched "merger" with Typhoon. The simple fact there is no one on the Racing Board competent or savy with IT development not too mention gaming. Given that NZRB is treading into Casino and lottery territory perhaps its time to investigate the combination of Racing Board and Lotteries Commision into one entity. The Racing Board insults all New Zealanders by outsourcing to NYX who probably themselves outsource to India. How many middle players do we need? No wonder there is nothing left at the end of the chain.

  8. Ok. As promised, Here is the lowdown on NYX/Openbet from a friend who is in a senior management position in probably THE biggest US facing offshore book. "We talked to them two years ago and they were talking US$1.6-1.8m for software. I have no idea what they are doing for the TAB, but $90 million cannot be a realistic number. $90 million would buy you a 1/4 share in William Hill and they would come and do it for free. "It's just another case of a state betting agency gone mad in an area they have no clue about. "I could have got them a deal for 40% of gross profit and no expenses and their customer base would also be a lot happier. "I imagine their current net profit is not high." (he's right - in industry terms the TAB's fixed odds profit is embarrassing) . " So much for their extensive tender process. They didn't even talk to these people, nor the industry leaders. Which begs the question who did they talk to? And why on earth would they authorise such a massive spend when clearly it is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy beyond the normal price for such an undertaking??? I wonder.

  9. Even if the Midget was interested in my views....he's not ,I'm banned and Im happy about it .......I would repeat what Ive said before. People in the modern world have little interest in horses......to get introduced to them you need to live near the open spaces and have few other options of things to do. More importantly folk just aren't interested in spending hours travelling to and hanging around racetracks.Even if they had modern facilities ,great coffee and $1 Beers ...no difference. Most importantly people will not put their hard-earned on horses running around a track. To even contemplate this you need a lot of knowledge plus the many variables make it near impossible to ever breakeven or win.I think less than 5% of punters do that. People are time poor and definitely cash-strapped.People want to live in big houses ,have flash cars ,phones ,things and their family expects it hence all the credit cards etc....thats if they have jobs ,and then they have to live in the big cities where cost of living impossible. Even retired people with limited discretionary money now have trips to Cuba and Mediterranean cruises as essentials plus Bruce Sprinsteen concerts at $300 plus travel. Sure people love a bet and young people especially ,Sports betting satisfies that need ,Kiwis think they know a lot about sport and the players and sport gets a lot of publicity.People dream of a big win......hence the love of LOTTO which has life-changing results. It began around 1987. Then there are the pokies which attracts the punter who whats a quick fix ,alone in their own little space...they are readily available . We know they are addictive and there are some serious social casualties but they are with us and part of us now ....plus not only poor people love pokies ,many established respected people in community love them. The demand is there. Racing ..NO.......there is a stigma attached with horse betting , and being seen in a TAB.This aint going to change. Now there is little or no publicity....the role models tend to be flawed , the participants have been getting into trouble for years they talk funny and often look funny. Plus NZ is small ,and its easy for neighbours Australia to put on a better show........other neighbours Hong Kong have best racing in world and big punters know this. I think its fairly obvious where the NZ industry is heading...I doubt the NZ Govt will care too much.in the good old days the Racing was one of their main sources of Taxation..not now.....the Nz Govt can't throw money at it.

  11. Like Phantom i had never heard of nyx. Maybe my ignorance. I see they are listed on the NYSE however it seems a UK firm Open Bet is the crux of nyx. Seems just a loose arrangement where nyx can be made to look bigger than it is. Now the puzzling aspect is that nyx seems to trace back to an Aussie who used to be employed as some sort of betting inspector in the Northern Territory. All these outfits have the same spin vocabulary describing how massive they are but at the end the reader is no wiser. All in all it looks murky as you would think they would have a simple history page. Bit like the journalist turned "internet guru" whose international sounding company had as its CEO a local business educator acting as mentor. For a moment I thought there was some connection with Matt Davey and the Typhoon people and there could still be. Anything is possible. I query why there wasn't any announcement from NZRB.

  13. What is this obsession with being "front of the market" to quote Glenda. All we really need is for them to do the basics right. Surely Glenda and John would be the least racing knowledgeable and competent people to ever head the racing industry. Who was largely responsible for appointing them? Say what you like about the Aussies, but over there both of those two would have been gone long ago.

  15. I feel as though I'm repeating myself, but I will, the exciting thing about this meeting is that the gloves are off, enough is enough, NZTR and Jackson are bristling and they've assembled a team that'll clearly stand up to the NZRB and Glenda Hughes, they're empowered, Tony Pike is a reluctant and accidental front man but I can't help feeling that he's the right man, that this is truly a watershed event and it's the beginning of the end for the bludgers who've been feeding like parasites off the industry since 2003. Get on board Leggy.

  18. Mark, when it comes to ANZAC tipping leadership skills their can only be one nomination in our tack room for the Sharks Captaincy Position that being our long and devoted Captain Rees. His outstanding and quality " Ace in The Hole " recommendations brings pending excitement into our stable for the upcoming weekend. Mark, i'm just happy to be part of an exciting and skillful tipping team. I appreciated Ree's invite. In turn, i'm hoping, to pick a few winners on the day for the Sharks. Plus, weather pending, i'm heading out this Saturday Morning for my first Marlin Fishing trip with my Grand Children. I've waited along time to do this with them :). My money is on FWTB catching the first " Bob Marley " fish. That kid can attract any thing both on land or sea :). Mark, have a good tipping competition yourself. cheers.

  19. not quite apples Vs apples comparing this to Fairtax though. Then there was a target - slash the Duty. At $30m or so and it was 5/8ths of f all for the politicians to all agree with the newly appointed Racing Minister in Helen's coalition Since then racing has acquired the poker machine license successfully - still doesn't come close to balancing the books though and things are what they are. The major target left is the NZRB itself - its cost structure and the way it can influence the 3 codes. An independent director I knew was appointed to the NZRB at the outset, however they exited stage left at the first juncture - described it as a cottage industry, That was 2006. A decade on and we're still a cottage industry with the cottage getting older. For mine, an independent board could effect radical change. That would requires a change to the current Racing Act. None of the codes are barking that and why would they, as then they'd lose control of the status quo.

  21. Thanks for your input, Pete. Geoff (Lastof40) and I had a pow-wow and thought that what with having had a few Blues campaigns under his belt now, his excellent ability at picking winners, his good nature and complete reliability, Donald Tru ....er......Gordy (Gordy55) is the ideal man to be MIGHTY BLUES CAPTAIN this campaign. Brian (Kundalini) has plenty on his plate posting for a number of other players without adding anything else, and Pete is happy with whoever we choose as long as it is not him ! Very pleased to confirm that GORDY has accepted the role of MIGHTY BLUES CAPTAIN, and I'm sure will do a first rate job. Thanks Gordy. If at any time Gordy thinks being Captain of the Mighty Blues is a stressful job, then he can thank his lucky stars he won't be Captain of the`Tu..', er...... 'Tur.....' .............let's not go there, eh...I'd promised to play nice. I need to be a man of my word. Wonder what poor wretch will get THAT job. Just thinking hypothetically ...not about any particular team at all. Go GORDY ! Go MIGHTY BLUES !

wonder how many dogs would have broken 31 and 18 today as most winning margins were by 3L or more? Outside of Aherns team and a few of Roberts, the CD dogs looked reasonably weak today. If that's your idea of a strong meeting than NZ racing is doomed.

  26. Here are the rules for newbies and those who want to check: THE RULESApart from the new scratching rule, the rules remain unchanged from the last comp which seemed to work well and met with little complaint.1. Players. Each team will consist of 5 players. If you can't play on a given week you may nominate a sub from outside the comp or have a team mate post for you although in the latter instance their selections on behalf of the missing player must vary from their own to some degree.2. Draw. The draw will match each team against another team every week until all teams have played each other in the Round Robin part of the comp. At the conclusion of the Round Robin section the top teams will enter into a Finals Series which will be a straight knockout with the following format: Finals Rnd 1 Game A - 1st v 8th Game B - 2nd v 7th Game C - 3rd v 6th Game D - 4th v 5th Finals Rnd 2 Game E - Wnrs Game A v Wnrs Game D Game F - Wnrs Game B v Wnrs Game C Grand Final Wnrs Game E vs Wnrs Game F If the losers in Finals Round 1 want to play out the last two weeks in a 3rd-8th playoff series then we can do that. The 9th and 10th placed teams can play a best of three series over the final 3 weeks for Wooden Spoon honours 3. Selections. Competitors are required to select two runners per race. No subs are to be posted. All selections should be posted at the same time although I may make allowances if this is not possible due to late arrival for posting. Posting the same numbers for each race is not permitted. I don't think your team mates would want you to do that anyway. You must post at least 6 different (initial) selections to your opponent if you post after them. The minimum number of different selections has gone from 5 to 6 - please note ! 4. Scratching Rule. You may post replacements for any scratching by editing your original post up until 11.00am on raceday. After that time any selection which is scratched will be replaced by the TAB sub followed by the 2nd favourite by TAB win odds in that order. If more than one horse meets the latter criteria then the replacement will be the horse with the higher number. 5. Investments. Each selection will be regarded as an imaginary $10 win bet while if both selections start, a $2 quinella combining the two selections will also be credited to the competitor. So that's a $22 investment per race per competitor if two tips are submitted. The races will usually be split 50/50 between NZ and Australia. 6. Best Bet. Each selector may choose one race in each country as a "best bet" selection. All $$$ earned from these races will be doubled. In the event of scratchings the same best bet (BB) will apply. There will be no transference to a subsequent race. If your best bet race is abandoned - bad luck !@7. H-T-H. The draw will pit individual players from the two teams drawn to play each other, against each other in head-to-head competition. The player with the most $$$ at the conclusion of the round is the winner for his team. The team with 3 or more winners wins the match.8. Countback. If a head-to-head contest is a tie on $$$ earned then a countback will determine the winner by award victory to the player who uniquely selected the highest placed horse in the final event. In other words if you both selected the same horse that cancels itself out. It would be the two selections which are different which will determine the tie-breaker. If the selections are the same for the final event then the same parameter will apply to the penultimate race and so on.9. Points. Teams will be awarded points as follows:3-2 win - 2 points 4-1 win - 3 points 5-0 win - 4 pointsBonus points Team profit bonus - 1 point Losing team with higher aggregate than their conquerors - 1 pointSo a well performed side which still loses may earn as many points (2) as a side which wins narrowly . 10. Joker. Twice during the Round Robin series the team captain of each team may elect to play their "Joker". They must advise this in the post in which they make their selections. They may or may not confer with their team regarding this deployment. The Joker will double the final points tally for that team for that week. So it's possible to score 10 points (this has been done more than once) from a single round while it is also possible to play your Joker score 0 points and waste it completely.11. Posting. Please post your selections by number (names are optional and unnecessary). If you post replacements for scratched horses then do so in anew post rather than edit your original.13. Closing Time. There is no closing time but selections are only valid if posted at least one minute before the starting time of the first or any race. My decision is final in this and all other matters. Also here are the pseudonyms and corresponding real names match-ups: Sir Castleton (Sir C) Ian (Von Cettes) Steve P (Steve Paul) Sylvia (usually posted by worst half Kay) Sir Gallivant (sir1galivant/Rex) Jack (JACK !) Sasha (usually posted by sire Ray) Casper (invariably known just as Casper) Ray (rayzor) Catalano (Catalano or "The Cat") Gordy (Gordy55) The Crucible (TC) Howie (Right first time) John (N1MUE) Pete (pete) Hesi (hesi) Brian (Kundalini) Von Smallhausen (VS) Geoff (LastOf40) Viceroy (Mike) Graeme (Brown Fox) Kay (Party Poker) Sarah (firefly or posted by PJ) Damion (posted by Kundalini) Sharne (sharne) Isaac (posted by Kundalini) Jen (Jenlove) Alan (osceola) Pam (Pam) FWTB (FlowinWithTheBreeze) Mr Gee (Geoff-mr_gee) Cam (Escameno) Richie (Richard McGee) Wrinkles (gummy shark) Rob (Dogzstar1) Jason (jasonmccook1) Cubes (Cubity) Rees (globederby12) Sarah M (posted by jasonmccook usually)/Tom (turny) Mark (Memphis2) Moose (Mooseman) PJ (Peter Jenkins) BWJ (Bryn, sired by PJ) Heather (Pegs Pride) Betty (posted by Kundalini) Maurice (moz1047) Rosina (posted by Kundalini) Steve (ziggy09) rdytdy (Ted) dawsie (Bryan)

    TV 1 story on pokies

Because TV3 haven't resumed their breakfast show I've had to watch that dirge over on 1, it's a rather slow show, moving at about the same pace as the short term residents of a funeral home. Nerula would like it. Anyway Hillary Barry has just had Peter Dunne on ( he doesn't mind the odd pokie rort and actually funds his own electorate's Santa parade directly from the proceeds of the addicts they exploit in his neighborhood ) and silly old Peter, who turned up in fancy dress today wearing a bow tie made from a recycled blood stained napkin, and hair by Donald Trumps stylist, he announced that whilst the number of pokie machines nationwide was reducing the volume of use ( volume or amount ? ) was increasing. They didn't discuss the magnitude of the increase in use but even if it's minor shouldn't we be worried that something as mind numbing and addictive as pokies is trending north when punting on horses ( which arguably is far more demanding and interesting ) is apparently heading south. Any thoughts on that ? What does it say about this industry and the product we're producing ?

  28. Mate, the TAB's fixed odds department is so poorly run and completely mismanaged, I reckon I could increase profit by $20m per a by implementing a handful of changes and introducing some basic systems which are accepted industry standards. It's not because I am a genius, either, just have a reasonable understanding of the industry and what's needed to generate maximum returns from your client base. It's not rocket science. And that's just the fixed odds department, these guys spend other people's money like it's going out of fashion. Let's have TWO TV channels which no one watches and ONE radio station which no one listens to. That makes sense. How about a tote system which no one else has bought (and which didn't work)? $7 million seems a fair price. A bet type which no one understands (Triple Trio). I could go on...

  29. You make this assumption, which many have in the past, that eliminating some tracks will help boost stakes at those tracks that remain. There has been no evidence of this happening previously. Opaki's demise does not seem to have had any benefit to Tauherenikau, Westport hasn't helped Reefton, nor has Nelson, Orari hasn't helped Timaru, Tapanui and Beaumont have hardly turned Gore and Wingatui into superstar tracks.

  30. We're Doomed

    Seriously?

I know it's an age old argument with no winner, but seriously it is hard to see how anyone could consider Gallops more boring than Trots when many of the big stakes races in the trotting code have $1.20 favs, who usually win. That virtually never happens in the Gallops. Compare just in recent weeks the NZ trotting Cup winner at $2 with the NZ Galloping Cup winner at $12.90. And the Auck Trot Cup winner at $2.70 (with other winners at $1.20, $1.30 and $1.90 on the night) and the Wgtn Cup winner at $14.90. There just doesn't seem to be much joy for the average punter at the trots. Certainly each to their own. I know some people love $1.20 winners in big races, but it does nothing for me.

  34. That is not surprising, if true. It's the nature of these type of negotiations. Openbet is possibly the premier FO platform in the world used by the likes of PaddyPower, Betfair, WilliamHill, Ladbrokes etc. I doubt TABCORP could offer anything close and so it would be understandable that the RB would extend and pursue negotiations with what seemed the best option. I'm not clear what the fascination is with dealing with TABCORP as some kind of preference.

  35. I went to the road show. The 70m was talked about as the total cost of implementing all four key strategies. See below from the SOI. About half of that was for the FO platform. If the 75max has morphed into 90m we are talking an extra 15m not an extra 90m and half of that has nothing to do with the FO platform cost. SOI.docx

  36. Pokies are a cancer on society - the people most susceptible to falling into a spiraling addiction are generally those who can least afford it. I don't think their existence can be justified by the benefits received by the community through grants etc, the harm caused to the families of those addicted is too great. The whole construction of them is aimed at getting people addicted. Anyway, back to the topic at hand. Is punting on horses really heading South? Or is the rate of spending at the Racing Board going up faster than revenue is growing? I don't think the increase in spending on pokies says anything about the product that racing is providing - I don't think many of those people pouring money into pokies would be putting that money through the TAB if pokies didn't exist.

    NZRS.....

You didn't answer my question mug and that was do you class them as a factory ? Do you class importing non chasers as quality ? Tell me how many pups are born at each place that make it to the track and how long they last .Your talking this season and that's fine tell me who is making the most money because I wouldn't have a clue all I know is how much it costs to bred and rear a litter and how much it cost to get an import in so I would say neither of them would have turned a profit this season .

    NZRS.....

Ahern races 90-130 dogs a year (including imports) and her representative at last years awards said they are breeding and rearing 3-400 dogs at a time and they want to increase there numbers. What happens to the other 300? only 1 out of 4 dogs are making the track according to her figures said in the speech and the figures on the NZGRA website. Hardly a successful breeding operation. Condoning one trainer while rubbishing the other for their breeding methods is ridiculous, especially if these figures are correct.

Ahern = half the dogs of McInerney so far this season, well over 1000 less starters so far, 50+ more wins, and I can GUARANTEE Ahern has had FAR FAR more C4/C5 winners than Mcinerney. At least they breed / import quality... You can tell which one of those 2 operations is making money... Dog food, staff, 1 location vs 2... Obviously McInerney is doing something wrong and that is they are average breeders and breed with average dogs. Apart from Norm and a couple of sprinters I'm struggling to think of many of their dogs that have won a C5 middle distance / staying race this season.

    Avondale R1

Ridiculous! The absence of those five late scratchings altered the tempo of the race. Whose to say if Splendido would have gotten such a soft lead. Should have been voided. R2 just run now...Boy am I sick of Real Savvy running on late.

  44. Agree and understand. But it will be a start. $10K looks better on paper than $7K.

  45. No doubt we will send something over to plunder the AJC oaks and AJC Derby as per usual Pogo (just suck it up son). With regard to OUR Derby and Oaks there is still plenty of water to go under the bridge but at this point I would be looking at: NZ Derby: Sacred Elixir $5, Nights Watch opened $81 now $15, Camino Rocoso opened $81 now $26 and Redeem The Dream $26. (Baker/Forsman stable have a number nominated so keep a watch on what they eventually line up.) NZ Oaks: Assuming La Diosa won't be there as there is talk of her going straight to OZ instead this race at this point in time is very wide open. Currently keeping a watch on Rube Bridges $21, Savvy Dreams $31 and She Brings Joy $10. (Again with a watch on what the Baker/Forsman stable do). Good luck with your Golden Slapper's race.

    Derby and Oaks

Given that the "slugs" have dominated your Oaks and Derbies and other features for years Pogoson, I'm sure they'll be at it again, like marauding Vikings, reeking havoc on your carnivals 2015/16 season saw them not only win a majority of your derbies and Oaks but also a high % of your Group races. There are plenty of slugs getting ready for more action for the 16/17 season and it will be "business as usual".

  47. True when you put it in comparison like that. Why is Ellerslie running $50k maidens? Or re these funded solely by the club?

No i don't talk shit, and even better, i'm not greedy. Now tell the folks the truth, you want to import unlimited ready made dogs, because you don't have the patience or where with all to do the hard yards. After creaming everything, and investing very little, you then eye up the money that is going to the breeders and owners of NZ dogs. Be happy with what you have, and stop focusing on what is not yours.

Because you import all your stock, and do not breed them, or rear them, or educate them, but rather have it all done for you. You then eye up all the money on offer to the hard working local breeders whom commit big money thats required in developing a litter through to racing, none of which you do. Leave the breeders alone i say, its working, and they deserve everything that comes their way.
