Billy, for one, it's not their job, and with OSH breathing down their throats, and ACC Levies as they are, who can blame them. In the real world, we would have more attendants for every barrier crew in the country, but NZ racing can't afford it. I do take my hat off to each and everyone of these people involved in this job, it is a thankless task! Not many horses beat the Northern crew!5 points -
WHY 11 RACES AT AUCKLAND AND CAMBRIDGE
tryagain and 3 others reacted to alltheway!!! for a topic
Nope. I want to limit breeding. When three or four people are breeding 3-400 dogs a year and none of these dogs are going thru gap and only a little over a quater are getting to the track. Qs have to be asked, and alot of the dogs getting to the track cant get pass c1 is ridiculious4 points -
A question for Final Luca. You stated that Michelle Payne was " "treated like a dog". Can you explain/expand on that statement please. I think you are incorrect but I'd be interested in how you came to use such a phrase. My only recollection of her "grievance" with the racing industry was her general view that woman jocks don't get the same opportunities as the males, when it comes to a Group races. She made her point quite emphatically after her winning ride (ride of the year) in the Cup, as a spur of the moment reaction to winning the race after nearly being taken off at the request of one of the owners after her MV Cup ride. I think she is correct in that statement mind you. But that doesn't sound like being "treated like dog". Please explain?3 points

The G1 1600 to 2000m winning colts seem to be most wanted by the Studs. Staying pedigrees with speed characteristics. Ones that come to mind are Reset, Zabeel, Keeper, Lonhro, Show a Heart, Redoubtes Choice, All Too Hard, etc. All too performers at 1600m G1 level in Australia. Some go on to win beyond 1600m but they have had the speed and stamina to win those good 1600m races.3 points

aquaman and 2 others reacted to it's a ballroom for a topic
That is the problem , quantity over quality. Fields should be selected highest grade down over , mixing grades if need be to make quality racing .Even 7 dog middle and 6 dog distance fields up the grades is surely much better than all of the C1 sprints going round now. The C1 sprints have a place , but the quality dogs should come first.3 points -

I paid my way through Uni doing barriers two days a week when I was at Curtin in Perth. In two years we missed out on one horse, a pig by Beau Sovereign called Sturgeon. I made it my pet project never to lose him at the barriers and worked with his trainer to get him sorted. Also flew horses in planes to get to Uni so I learnt the game through fire. Also spent time in UK where they use the blind fold on a regular basis. It seriously works the oracle. So this "keyboard warrior" was appalled, shocked and frustrated at the absolute lack of barrier knowledge that I saw at Oamaru in Race 7. Totally unprofessional in this day and age3 points

Congratulations to Mike and Linda on their quinella yesterday at Auckland it was great to see these long serving participants back with a couple of dogs that I am sure will give them quite a few wins between them. I have always held Mike and Linda in high regard as trainers their dogs are always well presented and look the part their strike isnt to bad either. The word round the traps is that this litter is their swansong sad if true. how about you watch last years awards hah? where the Ahern rep said they are breeding over 300 a year and plan to increase their numbers. How many Ahern dogs do we see get to the track? At most, 100 a season including imports. How many do we see go through gap? less than 1/5... and they are not even the biggest breeders in NZ as im sure you are well aware of Joe blogs2 points -

The unfortunate part about yesterday was that the ex jock that was trying to lead the horse in had no horse sense at all. What we was doing was counter horse intuitive. This isn't personal. It's a poke at a system that is getting progressively worse. Had that footage aired in the international racing market we would have been the weekly joke. As for the use of a blind, it's been on many a first starter in the UK and it's generally put on while the jock is up, although I have seen it put on an I mounted horse before....what ever works. Have you ever tried a blind? Horses often need encouragement and security. Having a couple of people either side from the rear often does the job. You don't need to be 14 stone. I weight 90kgs and I can assure you I didn't weigh that when I was at Uni. I take my hats off to most barrier staff. I don't take my hat off to incompetent barrier staff, or those who haven't pursued enough passion to ensure mediocrity doesn't rear its ugly head.2 points

Actually, it kind of is. The JCA reports mentions the prosecuting Steward Mr Mulcay basically went with a reduced/lesser charge as he thought the penalty for an improper driving charge would be too severe.2 points -
Not sure about "up themselves", NGH was too busy up our girlfriends, well not very far up our girlfriends I'm told but he was doing his best with what God gave him. The only one up himself was Graham Walters, of Loch Linnie fame, he was desperately in love with the half length mirror, but even he came around after a bit of roughing up from the locals. I think we generally liked the northerners, they taught us all about hair dye, bell bottoms, soft top cars, Neil Diamond, how to roll joints, and how to wear bangles on our wrists and studs in our ears.2 points

Yes and the JCA thought the charge to be sufficient to determine guilt and therefore upheld the charge. The power is in the hands of the JCA they could of dismissed the charge of evidence was insufficient. Im my opinion the suspension was warranted and the term appropriate- what isn't appropriate though was the pathetic JCA imposed penalty on Robert Argue, he should of also got a couple of months..... This isn't the fault of the stipes though2 points -

Makes sense, With the poor record of in-breeding Danehill you would hope that the majority of mares he served were from a non Danehill sire line. The one Frankel that you mentioned that is out of a Danehill line mare is Cunco, he has a very interesting pedigree as his sire (Frankel) is a grandson of Sadler's Wells out of a Danehill mare and his dam (Chrysanthemum) is a grandson of Danehill out of a Sadler's Wells mare. Your statement reminds me of a recent article (racing post I think) in regards to who Coolmore will be sending most of their top class race mares by Galileo to once at stud as many of these top Galileo racemares are out of Danehill sire line broodmares. So they don't want be wanting to further duplicate the Danehill and Sadler's Wells, stallions mentioned were Zoffany and War Front (who they have used in the past who stands in America), unfortunately the ideal stallion to use is Dubawi but Coolmore won't use Darley stallions! The search for different outcross options remains2 points

It was great to be the owner of a winning horse yesterday at your meeting. I would like to mention to the commitee members that after driving 250 km to get there it would have been nice to have a hand shake and a drink of congratulations. Bloody poor show when you have to go to the bar and shout yourself. While a nice young lady gave us a bottle of wine just remember who pays the bills for these horses. Suggest to commitee that become more active looking after people and you will get more horses in your fields.2 points -

WHY 11 RACES AT AUCKLAND AND CAMBRIDGE
alltheway!!! reacted to Slim Shady for a topic
I do agree with what you say here but unfortunately the association and the clubs have their backs against a wall on this because their in the position of "once bitten twice shy". We have all seen certain trainers nominating dogs for distance races with absolutely no intentions of lining them up in it purely to get the numbers to have the race carded in the first place. If they allow six dog distance races theres every chance this will still happen and they will be 4 or 5 dog fields. There would have to be a stand down rule ammendment that would coincide with 6 dog distance fields...maybe something like scratched dogs can only be inspected by track vets in the presence of a stipe and must be checked within 24hrs of the time they were scratched, if the so called injury or illness is not detected then 5 week stand down, this would go close to detering field manipulation. Classic case of the minority wrecking it for the majority here.1 point -

Black Kirrama reacted to Midget for a topic
Pretty much accurate Huey. Maybe Hayes' sentiments reflect the Australian way of thinking, they're always in a hurry, mind you when your ancestors survival depended on getting away from the crime scene ASAP it does sort of make sense. Meantime they have very few decent stayers ( nor do we at the moment though ) and their big cups are largely full of Europeans, bred or trained of course, but still big one paced slugs they've bought out of Europe for about ten times what they're worth, or will ever win, unless they go to Oakbank. Roll on Savabeel, Shocking and Tavistock, bring back the glory days of NZ racing when our stayers raped them every year.1 point -

WHY 11 RACES AT AUCKLAND AND CAMBRIDGE
alltheway!!! reacted to bus stop for a topic
As I mentioned in a pervious topic the future of racing in the North is facing a number of concerns around dog numbers and the quality of dogs racing no disrespect to anyone intended but it is what is. I honestly cant see any improvement up North going forward as their is only a few owners importing dogs and they are not what i would call open class dogs of what i have seen racing up north. So yes the industry needs a breeding program which is controlled to a certain point on quailty vs numbers1 point -

Start with two people to the side, one on each side where the saddle is. Don't have the idiot you had pulling on its head like that. Making nice cooing and reassuring sounds whilst calmly touching and patting the horse, slowly get to the rear at both sides. Don't lose physical contact with the horse and watch it's ears. That's the view into the brain. Make sure both parties have bodily contact on either side with the bloke in front, calmly patting and caressing the horse's head as though he was playing a virgin. Then slowly both men on either side, without losing bodily contact, link up behind. If it kicks out you'll both be out of range because if there's two of you the horse won't know which one to tag. What ever, go calmly, always soothing. When you do manage to link up behind, have a lot of contact, not just with the linked arms. That allows you to stear it by using your weight as the guide. If it still doesn't want a bar of it, put a blind fold on. Works wonders but once again you need serious body contact to stear it to the right place. That will get you 99 percent of all horse problems.1 point

It's actually a real mess.....stallions covering 200 odd mares each season....progeny that have multiple strands of Northern Dancer on both sides. We're seeing an explosion of wind afflictions, immune response irregularities and a mess of champion racehorses who are claimed to be the best ever but unfortunately none of them are materially challenging historical race times. All well and good giving Frankel (for example) an all time highest rating after only 14 starts but surely the highest ever rated horse should not only win those races but win them in the fastest times ever. That's the real measure of Bolt....not his unbeaten record. So to the pattern of the current thoroughbred industry. We are being seriously fucked up by the likes of Coolmore. Greed is now King followed by a topping of fashion. The whole game should be trying to improve the breed, or at the very least, attempting to maintain the vitality and duribility of the breed. There is a common language being will progeny be saleable. That's bollocks. It should be does my mare suit on type and balance of pedigree so that one breeds vitality and soundness. The Northern Dancer breed are not really durable, so crossing them a sqillions times won't be good for the breed. One only has to go back a few generations to wonder why the likes of Hyperion and Bold Ruler have been banned to the back blocks when at their peak they were where Danehill and co are now. What is seriously conspicuous is that for all his amazing progeny, where is a hier apparent sire son to Galileo? Now before you start jumping up and down about Frankel, just remember he covered mares in his first season who included 40 odd group one winners and 60 odd dams of group winners, and when his progeny hit the group one races, they failed. I've been a real fan of this horse from the day I saw him as an I raced 2yo but I'm just keeping it real. It also didn't stop me from being the under bidder of a yearling that made 1.1m quid this year. As to the serious breeders that I mentioned....the main trait of all of them is that they try to breed for the breed and not the sales ring. In some instances they are setting up the following generation's progeny. Bunker Hunt was into hybrid vigour and achieved this by buying what he thought was pedigree wise the best representatives of certain bloodlines. So he sourced mares and horses from all over the World, in particular South America. if I were to articulate the general expression, it would be that all of these breeders really knew their breed on type and personality and they continue to try and promote the essence of that1 point

Totally unfair to suspend him. It wasnt as if he was in a proper speed dual and chasing the horse up. The gaps didn't open up in the field so the other drivers weren't to concerned at the tempo they were running. More of a case on the hose being in a feild too strong for it and then ending up keen while in the worst postion. The rui should have a lot to answer for the stipes consistency and countless obvious mistakes lately Especailly in the north .it's turning into a joke. Friday night at Cambridge was one of the worse causes of incompetences and the chair stipe decided to go for a lessor charge because the initial charge could have a heavy penalty. Surely that's not teaching anyone and is a complete turnoff for punters.1 point

A challenge to the breeding theorists
Lloyd Vivian reacted to Breeder for a topic
Berri You know as well as anyone that there is no "silver bullet" in selecting horses whether it is based on a pedigree or on type. If there was, then Coolmore, Darley and everyone else would be onto it. Most people who look at pedigrees have their own ideas ( or share with others) on what they think are important and similarly those who look at types and temperament have their ideas. The fact that Winx did not sell for millions as a yearling shows that she didn't fill the criteria of those with deep pockets ( and presumably those with the best advice money can buy). Those who look at pedigrees are just trying improve the odds of selecting a good horse in exactly the same way those who look for a particular type of horse . I think Swynford , for example, has said a few times he would always look at the horses he has selected "off paper" with the help of an experienced horseman. Similarly I doubt anyone would buy a horse of any value just on type and not at least look at the page in the catalogue. It would be very boring if we all agreed with each other on the issue.1 point -
