And my opinion for what its worth.........(probably wont be a popular with some). Most, if not all of the injuries sustained on Sunday appeared, to my eyes, to be the result of competitive racing/ jostling. Just saying............. That and also the fact that occasionally some dogs will line up with an undetected pre existing injury are contributing factors to these injuries, the other being an unsafe track. But not always the tracks fault. As long as we are keeping it in perspective...sadly we will never have an injury free industry. But certainly can agree that everyone, trainer's, track curators, management should being doing all they can to keep injury toll to a minimum.

  2. Shame all this action was not initiated by our own administration long before this latest fiasco. Where was the Welfare Officer before this. Where was the Racing Manager. Where was the CEO. I'll tell you, come in close, closer, zzzzzzzzzzzzzsleep zzzzzz walking. Safe tracks come in a long last behind more important issues such as gear notifications, dress codes, scratchings, etc. They really are letting the code down when it comes to the really important issues. I can feel a new position becoming available at GRNZ headquaters, Track preparation officer to join, Racing Manager 1 and two, Welfare Officer, and CEO. Seriously though, these problems are not new. Otago , Southland and CH CH, all have major problems with rain on the day. Cambridge has huge problems, now Auckland. Why is it taking so long to fix?. The answer you get from GRNZ is employ a new person, then sweep it under the carpet.

  7. You outline the truth, Aqua but remember we have just got rid of a chairman that has had us all in recess for years while he was in power. He perfected the art of sleepwalking while awake, an absolute disaster, and we will feel the affects of that for a while yet I am afraid....The hole process now needs to be ripped a part and every one held accountable for their own actions or lack of it..

  8. Totally agree with you. Yes tracks obviously need a lot of work and are nowhere near perfect, but it sounds like the right people are trying to change things which onviously won't just happen over night. But Its easy to blame/abuse tracks, workers and volunteers in the industry, but how many dogs are showing up to the races with existing injuries and then stuffing themselves completely in races. How many trainers are using the track vets quick once over at kennelling time as a warrant of fitness for their dogs. You look at some of the stake earnings of some trainers and wonder how they could afford to put dinner on the table let alone pay to take their dogs to be checked properly.

    Auckland

After having a few days to think about the happenings at Auckland on Sunday I have come up with what I think are the major problems. Firstly why is the track being prepared for racing on the morning of the races? I believe it is a catalyst for concern and critisizim from trainers when they see it in this state. Also there is absolutely no way a track should be prepared for racing that close to a meeting.I understand the curator does not work Saturdays which to me seems rediculous when the club races Sundays. Secondly I noticed when the tractor was going around it was shuddering up and down in places which obviously means the track surface is uneven. If anyone has the dogzone recorded you will see it on there.I believe if the tractor is doing this it means there are hard soft patches all round the track and a slight unevenness.John did say the track gets laser levelled 3 times a year which is a must for all tracks. Thirdly I don't know why I have never noticed this before but looking down the back straight form the sprint boxes the rail disappears into a "corner".In my opinion that is causing a lot of the interference on that bend.I think there is an urgent need for a transitional bend to be put in. The greyhound tracks are the engine room of this sport and should and must be the major focus for this industry to continue to survive and prosper. NZGRA must find some industry money and get to work on providing safer tracks and improve how our tracks are curated. These are just my opinions but would like some constructive feedback. AC

  13. Just to whet your appetite for this Sundays racing, how the Aussie media are rating D A Me. And just look at that last 800 unbelievable and a 3 year old. This Dream Princess is the heir apparent 22 February 2016 Our Dream About Me winning the second of the NSW Oaks heats on Saturday night. Photo by Ashlea Brennan. RACE nine at Tabcorp Park Menangle on Saturday night was the final race on a big card and short priced favourite Our Dream About Me won the second heat of the NSW Oaks. While the victory itself was expected, as the filly is yet to taste defeat, the closing sectionals the daughter of Bettors Delight ran were something out of the ‘Twilight Zone’. At the end of 2400 metres, Our Dream About Me reeled off a personal last half of 52.53. For those not accustomed to the Menangle sectionals that is literally ‘low flying’. Only three other horses broke 54 seconds for their final 800 metres on Saturday night. Sophies Ideal ran home in 53.93 when finishing 7th in the Robin Dundee Classic, while Rocknroll Music (53.33) and Gina Grace (53.91) competed against Our Dream About Me and were both brave in defeat. However, comparing the times to the Chariots Of Fire meeting makes for even more compelling reading. The conditions at Menangle for the Chariots program were ideal for fast times. It was still and hot and the times reflected the perfect conditions. The Chariots Of Fire was won by Have Faith In Me in 1:48.8 and here are the closing halves for the three horses that broke 54 seconds. Have Faith In Me 53.36 Lord Zin Zan 53.92 Arms Of An Angel 52.73 Two qualifiers of the Miracle Mile were also run at the meeting. Here is a list of horses that broke 54 seconds. Cordina Sprint Monifieth 52.86 My Hard Copy 53.33 Coca Cola Amatil Sprint Beautide 53.60 Blazin N Cullen 53.26 Easy On The Eye 53.63 Major Crocker 53.94 Our Hi Jinx 53.51 Suave Stuey Lombo 53.91 Cold Major 53.75 Not only is Our Dream About Me giving age away to all of the horses mentioned above but she also had to race over 2400 metres compared to the Chariots, Cordina and Coca Cola Amatil Sprints being contested over the 1609 metres. She is bred to be a star – her older half brother Christen Me has already won the Chariots/Miracle Mile double and Our Dream About Me’s mother Splendid Dreams is a sister to Adore Me and Have Faith In Me. A win in Sunday’s NSW Oaks would see Our Dream About Me’s prizemoney go past $550,000, a remarkable achievement for a filly that will have only raced on twelve occasions. For the sake of the harness racing ‘kingdom’ let’s hope this Princess ascends to the throne and continues to compete for seasons to come.

Yep we were well beaten. It's mainly disappointing because, for the past year I'd been looking fwd to this series in NZ as one we could win. Once Starc and Johnson were gone I was even more confident. However it turned out we weren't even close. I don't agree in righting us off all together. Boult and Southee are fairly high up in Test stats but they didn't really fire a shot this season, against Aus. Williamson also struggled until that final innings and Taylor was missing. Henry looks a promising bowler/No.8 batsman, Watling and Latham are solid in the positions they fill. I reckon the makings are there for a good team. They just need to fire.

WhoKnows Livingston is not the most tractable horse going around. She is by Elusive City whose stock invariably play up in the stalls. Bit unfair to blame Zinjite! Will be interesting though what happens if they engage a more senior rider. She might be a bit limited.

  22. Hi, I am posting here just out of curiosity if anyone is willing to let me volunteer around there kennels in the Waikato area. I really enjoy watching the dogs and am keen to get a foot in the door without yet purchasing anything. I am currently dairy farming in Manawaru so Cambridge would probably be the ideal location for me to travel to. I can help out on both a Saturday and Sunday with the possibility of some weekdays if wanted and I have no problem whatsoever doing the shit jobs. Have been sifting around this forum for awhile and thought I would take the plunge and see what comes of it. Thanks. You can contact me (Matt) on 0277043056 or 072124174.

Well done to Steve Clark for standing up for what he believes was right in the interests of protecting the welfare of his dogs. I may be wrong but it seems we have significantly more track-related issues that our cousins across the ditch. Why is that? Is it an education thing in relation to curators, is it a lack of investment in the regular maintenance of our tracks? Or do Australia have the same number of problems but I just don't hear about them? For mine, it is a shame we no longer have grass track racing - whilst it wasn't conducive to regular racing in the middle of winter, it seemed to be kinder on the dogs with any injuries generally being minor in nature rather than career / life ending (there were exceptions to this of course). Sincere condolences to the connections of the Jay Low. I just hope that something positive can come out of this very sad event.

I don't think Zinjite Moki will be on Livingstone again if the trainers have any common sense about them (and they are very good trainers), twice she hasn't even been able to stay on the horse and the other time she was 3 wide the whole way, I think she needs to stick to riding in the winter time when they are going a lot slower. If they ever put a decent jockey on this horse it will win one soon, they have had Jason Jago, Marco Chui and Zinjite Moki on the horse so far, why they don't put a decent jock on who knows?

Your opinion has been & is respected. Here's a reflection of mine. The Stewards report on the day says: "Track: Good Initial concerns over the hardness of some areas of the track were addressed by the Club prior to Race 1 with the track being well maintained and watered throughout the meeting." Therefore the "Club" was well aware of the possibility that they had prepared an unsafe track. However, just who is the "Club"? Board, Members, Staff? Warning flag #1. How many dogs were late scratched for safety reasons prior to the first race? Move on the race #4, when the first hock injury occurred. The dog jumped from the 7 box and began going amiss not long after the mat and near the area of where the gate where handlers bring the dogs on to the track. It's very rare to have injuries suffered in that area of the track in a middle distance race. The injury then appeared to be then further complicated entering the first turn. Warning flag #2. How many dogs were late scratched for safety then? What did the RIU further do to ensure the track was safe when an initial concern had become realized? On to race #7, when the second hock was claimed. This time the dog jumped from the #1 box and appeared fine until entry into the first corner, again relatively free of interference and at the point the lateral forces were maximised for the greyhounds frame to endure. Warning flag #3. Late scratchings? RIU? Race #9, from the 318m boxes clearly saw a dog sustain a front leg injury & nearly run into or possibly impact the 603m boxes because it was unable to handle the inertia after sustaining the injury. Warning flag? RIU? Race #10, again from the 318m boxes, claimed the third hock of the day. This instance was somewhat similar to the instance in the 7th race, although it was entering the opposite turn & earlier in the greyhounds arc. Warning flag #4. Late scratchings? RIU - No show still? Why was only then, a call out for an urgent investigation to be conducted to the GRNZ board chairman (who was likely close by on course)? Why wasn't the investigation initiated by the RIU? They're the ones in charge of running of a race meet from 7:30 in the morning. Not any of the above questions need to be answered on my behalf. I've already formed my own personal opinions. Sunday's meet at Manukau was not a one-off for their venue. The end result from it was very similar to a race meet when I lost my first dog due to a fractured hock on 06/04/14, when his was the second of three on the day. As I see it, a directive needs to be handed down to the RIU by GRNZ, as they're the ones that make the call on each individual race day. If & when a directive is issued it should cover at a minimum~ What will be the criteria (in numbers) for injuries incurred on a given day to launch the next "urgent investigation" into track safety for a venue? Will "concerns" prior to a meet commencing be the testing ground to pull the plug on an entire meet? At what point will be the proper time to abandon a race meet due to potentially unsafe track conditions? At what point during a meet will greyhound be allowed to be scratched penalty free due to track safety concerns?

I hope that Castles can do well at Hawkes Bay Puha as the Club deserves it. However, Castles got off to a poor start with his comments when the Group One day was callled off. At least Rutherford took the blame for Waikato the other week. Castles may have been the employee of The ARC but surely as Racing Manager he would have significant input into decisions. After Derby Day was a failure you would not expect him to be declarng the day a success on Weigh In. He liked to knock other clubs on Weigh In whilst his was non performing. He rubbished Otaki for having a 4 horse race saying that the race should have been called off. The next week his club had a 5 horse race for a $40k stake. Of course he was silent on that.

Isn't that still the case in the English Derby? No geldings or fillies allowed? I've always wondered why fillies are allowed to start in the NZ and Australian Derbies but colt can't start in the Oaks. If they are going to allow fillies to start why give them a weight advantage as well. It doesn't make sense

  35. www.justracing.com.au And Melbourne isn’t the only place that had problems last Saturday. In Sydney the visiting Kiwi galloper Hasselhoof can be seen in live footage clearly hitting his head on the top of the barrier stalls, but he wasn’t removed and vetted and scratched. He was just left in the barriers and the field was dispatched pretty much straight away when he was back on all fours. It is my considered opinion that irrespective of any horse’s price, the horse should mandatorily be scratched, but in the case of Hasselhoof it was inexcusable, as he was the $3.80 favourite and carried a fortune in bets. What is wrong with all these so called “great racing administrators” and “top stewards” that we have in Australia? They attend conferences both in Australia and globally and cannot come up with the fact that nationwide we need to invoke a racing rule that states, “A horse hitting its head on the barrier stalls is to be deemed a late scratching – no exceptions”.

Not as much as one former Chairman Lauchlan Kenneth Scobie Mackinnon whom the LKS Mackinnon Stakes is named after. He owned a very good 2yo colt called Carradale who won the 2yo Easter Stakes and among the beaten brigade in eleventh place was a horse called Phar Lap who was having his third unplaced start. MacKinnon of course had lofty thoughts for his colt as a 3yo especially in the Derbies. However, Phar Lap, a gelding came out and won the 1929 AJC Derby with Carradale finishing second and then Phar Lap won the VRC Derby with Carradale again finishing second. LKS MacKinnon obviously wasn't too pleased and talk quickly moved about geldings being able to take on colts in Derbies. With LKS a leading advocate but commencing in 1931 geldings were banned from racing in the VRC Derby against the colts and this went on until 1956 when geldings were allowed to compete again.

Your knowledge is impeccable Ted. I was there that day and the best horse retained the race. But Willetts was treated a bit unfair with the foul riding bit. I think it may have been because Sir Maurice Nathan, the Chairman, was a bit peed off at not winning his Clubs premier 3yo race.

Don't forget the Melbourne Cup scratching of Kiwi, Jimmy's book out later this year will cover that travisty. The He's Remarkable decision was fraud at best. Decisions like that need to go to a panel in say the UK where country of residence doesn't come in to it. He's Remarkable would be a Group 1 winner and may have stood for more money. Speaking of Saturday's decision, I don't care where interference happens, if it costs then overturn. However if there is no choice, because they slam the brakes on (which I would outlaw for safety reasons by the way), then no protest. If stewards think that in a split second going 40 kms an hour on 530 kgs of animal when you have to take evasion action, going in not out is logical (yeah right), then I would suggest we put stewards on a horse and see how good they are. Another bad decision Saturday.

All plaudits to Yeboahs connections for a correct and principled decision. Shame other trainers/ owners didn't show support by withdrawing their dogs. I'm due back on track with 3 new charges in about 3 mths, and i'm putting on notice any sub standard tracks, they will NOT FEEL MY DOGS FEET IF UNSAFE, and i will be the sole adjudicator of this.
