  1. In the words of OMC - "How bazaar, how bizarre" Sorry Brodie - couldn't resist. Your point about this being a precedent is a good one - going to make race watching a whole lot more interesting in the coming months. Having said that I don't actually have a problem with the Stipes growing a pair...

  2. Just listened to Jelly talking to Des Coppins about Vavasour, her current rating, what she might get after her Waikato Cup win, and where to from here. Remarkably, in fact incredibly, both Jelly & Des professed to not knowing how the ratings system worked. Extraordinary indeed, if they're telling the truth. I'm not here to educate anyone about the ratings system, but I'd like to say a couple of things. Firstly Jelly as long as males give females 2kg every time they race you'll drive the said males out of the game, particularly males who are well trained or well placed as they can't ever lose enough points to be competitive. When you drive all the males away you're left with just females Jelly, and that's what happened in the Waikato Cup. Authentic Paddy is the best male equivalent to Vavasour going around Jelly so if you want weight relief in handicaps best you get Lisa Latta to enter Authentic Paddy in whatever race you want to run in. Other than Delago's Secret and Dubai Shuffle ( and with all due respect they're just battlers ) there wasn't an open company male there to compress the handicap or even offer a contest, and the newcomer Saint Emilion was exposed in his first go over a trip in open company so I wouldn't expect you'll see him troubling the judge at that level any time soon. I haven't mentioned Storming The Tower because he's an 84. As is the way you're getting what you deserve NZ Racing, and you can't say you weren't warned. If you want an industry set up in a gender preferential manner to favour one sector ( the breeders ), compounded by a return to owners that's shameful by global standards, and the RTO is getting worse, then add in a system that punishes consistent males and makes it virtually impossible to drop ratings points ( see Dubai Shuffle ) well you've got a lethal compounding cocktail there, and you'll eventually get what you deserve. And you are Jelly, so get used to it.

So good to have Steve Davis back on the show on Saturday. My Sky'd it because I knew I would want to watch it more than once. Fantastic preview for the Winton meeting. Not many can pick winners there. Best part of the whole show was when Steve asked Stu if he was still on Tinder. Great stuff. Unfortunately it's back to two hours of boring commentary and woeful selecting this week, as Steve was only doing a one off appearance.

    Jelly Williams & Vavasour

And so Vavasour has now been re-rated, to 97 which obviously means she got 3 points, or 1.5kg for the Waikato Cup. Now this is not a criticism of Vavasour or her trainer, they're just fortunate beneficiaries of an awfully unfair system. Here's the data, the facts, and I'll use Authentic Paddy for a compare & contrast because he's a close male equivalent to Vavasour and I mentioned him earlier on that basis. AP, rated 105, total winnings $272,000, 2015/16 winnings $137,000 Vavasour, rated 97, total winnings $252,000, 2015/16 winnings $133,000 So if those two met in the City Of Auckland Cup in a fortnight AP gets 60kg and Vavasour gets 54kg, yes you read that correctly, a whopping 6kg difference just because one horse has an undercarriage, or what's left of it. What a farce, what a joke, and incredibly there are still some trainers and industry commentators scratching their heads and asking why are all the older males being retired or exported ? As is the way, and will continue to be the way, NZ racing is getting what it deserves.

  7. The 2 main reasons Purdon would have advised him not to appeal would be: 1. He wants as little adverse publicity as he can about a drive that he clearly ordered 2. Ho knows Williams got off lightly, and an appeal could very well see the penalty increased

I hope they don't form anything close to a Govt under the current leader, the guy and his cronies would be a disaster for NZ and Racing. I don't think it matters who the racing minister is to be honest, the racing industry is a shambles collectively & until they become one voice, no racing minister is going to take any notice of rambling's from so many different parties. Effective collective leadership from the industry is first needed before any change from Govt should happen so that one sector isn't favoured over another.

  12. 1.So if he clearly ordered it what exactly did he say.You obviously in the know ,as all that has come out of stable is that Tim was told that horse not screwed right down and give him as easy run as he can. That could mean anything. 2.IMO Williams didnt get off lightly when you look at a lot of other drives that have never been charged.Seen a horse nursed to 4 back on fence last start and in Junior Drivers penalty free race this week.

    Great News

Great news for everyone doing it tough and wondering how they will get through Christmas. The same people who have had to fight tooth and nail to get a 1% pay rise during the year. The same people who have watched Hospitals etc go underfunded because there just isn't enough money for adequate funding. We are sorry that you've had to stand by and watch your loved one suffer because of that growing waiting list. Is there a way we can add insult to injury for these people? I've found a way. Give the Politicians a 4% pay rise on top of all their other perks and then backdate that increase just before Christmas to July 1st. Fantastic. Well done The Politicians not only don't need a pay increase they didn't ask for one either. . Just out of interest what do they spend their money on anyway? Restaurant inside the beehive serving them top quality food. They have a handsome food allowance. Personal travel all heavily subsidized. Clothing allowance. Utility bills all taken care of. Brilliant superannuation package. Vehicle all sorted along with any repairs. Furniture allowance. Petrol all sorted etc etc etc etc etc etc. Everything we struggle to pay they get gifted. Then they get a huge pile of cream on their cake for Christmas. Nice. In the spirit of a United NZ like the one we grew up in they should all either refuse the farcical pay increase or accept it and donate it to the people who volunteer to help all the other Kiwi's who are really struggling. http://www.msn.com/en-nz/news/national/mps-get-a-pay-rise/ar-BBnvQSU?li=AAaeXZz&ocid=mailsignoutmd

  14. It is indeed a curious state of affairs and a sad one. You are right about both that and that they can't say they were not warned. The chickens have come home to roost as predicted and NZ Racing's spiral continues. The whole thing beggars belief.

  15. Why? I think we should be putting our focus toward the Junior drivers who are the future of the game. Kenny Browne as an amateur rider competed against all comers very successfully for decades. It often wasn't pretty and looked more like John Wayne leading a cavalry charge but you always knew what you were going to get. I don't object to the amateur drivers having their 15 minutes of fame. What I object to is this 15 minutes happening at so many race meetings now. The driving standard is average at best. What is the goal here? To have a NZ Cup for amateur drivers? To have the fourth leg of every harness quaddie to be an amateur drivers race? While we are at it when are we going to have one armed drivers races? What about drivers over 80 years of age races? I think they should restrict it to one amateur drivers race a month in NZ or make them all non tote races. This two and three amateur drivers races a week at times is bullshit. I'm overdosing on them.
    2 points
  16. I still don't get what your on about. Non tote amateur races were run with NO stakes whatsoever, so there were NO costs other than to the driver themselves! They should have stayed that way not inflict their standard of driving on the betting public!

Once first home buyers realise that buying their first property in Grey Lynn is unrealistic and they should get their foot on the ladder in Papakura or Manurewa instead, the so-called "unaffordability" issue will disappear. From my near 30 years as a property lawyer in South Auckland I saw plenty of young people in ordinary jobs and with realistic aspirations get a foot on the property ladder. Problem is, most of them want it all, and they want it now. The house in an inner suburb, along with the late model car, new furniture and appliances. They create for themselves a life or misery as they over-commit themselves with huge mortgages, hp and then a young family and the loss of one income. There is no affordability problem, just a mismatch of expectation vs reality.

TAB online Watch and Bet and whole website really, results, divs, stats, jocks, drivers etc...come along way from driving to TAB and listening to wireless Online Trackside is pretty good really...just the flicking between 1 and 2 and freezing from time to time annoying. (in which case I normally hit the radio trackside button @ top right of screen, select high quality link then arrow and wallah your listening to race)...not perfect but a good backup! Steve Davis and his personal interviews / George Simons race-calling. (just some of the positives to acknowledge those hardworkers responsible.. Thanks Porky

I wonder if the pay rise could some how be passed on to the carers who wipe my father in laws bottom 4 times a day as he sits in the same chair all day long. Now and again he manages to move a few yards on his scooter to make sure that his excrement is well and truly scattered all over the place and sometimes slips into his track suit pants. A 40% pay rise is surely due to these lovely, caring people.

    Jelly Williams & Vavasour

And spare a thought for Stolen Dance. She's had a mere 4 starts this season, 3 wins, won $121,000, but gone up 20 ratings points cf Vavasour 13 points for $133k. In addition SD won a Waikato open handicap late October, worth $25,000 ( yes 25k ) and she got 6 points for that yet Vavasour wins a $100k handicap race and gets 3 points. Twice the ratings penalty for a $25k race as Vavasour got for a $100k race. Saturday last SD wins a WFA fillies race narrowly beating a 79 rated horse in Pipi Beel, and she got 4 points, Vav beat a 90 rated horse by three times the margin and got 3 points. The two met in late September of course, SD in receipt of 4kg on that occasion and beat Vav home by a couple of lengths. If they met tomorrow SD would have to give Vav 1.5kg...... A 5.5kg swing. And the system is fair, rational and stands scrutiny !!! Sure it is .

Interesting to see that list of winners. I find myself unable to recall hardly any winners since 2000 and yet I can remember several winners during the 80's and 90's. It might be because I followed racing more closely during that period, but it also might be because the Waikato Cup was a much more significant race during earlier years.

Oh how well said was that. I'd love to sink the slipper into the genius that concocted this scheme/system......whatever. Trying to explain NZ racing to my Latino friends last week in Buenos Aires was frustrating, they are pretty well schooled in English mind, but they can't get their collective heads around the intellect here, then again, neither can I.....or Morty, or Dock Leaf and Huey it seems. Thank God for Asia, the Kiwi breds are slaying them up there, the Chinese weight spread and ratings seem to be non discriminatory, funny that, booming racing centre, non booming racing centre...........such is life.

Good thing you didn't have a bet on it today Ted. You'd be even more unhappy with the ride. I'm still not over Jarrod Todd's ride in the last race at Cranbourne yesterday. But back to this race and I think the relegation decision was wrong.

The anger following the loss of a successful bet is something never considered in the protest room. It is hard enough working out the race let alone the inquiries afterwards. I spent the day on course watching form reversals and completely different racing patterns from Wednesday, due to the rail being moved in 6 meters. I finally get the result I was after and bang! The siren goes. Nah says Howie, it was half way down the straight and the best two horses were 1st and 2nd. Wrong again. The jockeys did a superb job of fencing MDP in and he fought for and got a clear run to the line. Seen worse most saturdays. Am I planning to be back anytime soon? ... You work it out! Time to concentrate on sports betting. I have never seen a match overturned after the final whistle. Players may be ejected or red carded and or fined but the result is never changed.

Very noice attempt to SPIN what I said Bloke - it is to be expected from the Lotto brigade! I'll post the entirety of my original post, which was back in 2013, after a Tavistock won a $7k 2YO maiden at Otaki. "OH Come on you lot! This was a NZ 2YO race not an Aussie 2YO race! A mid week 2YO like Ockam's Razor(sp?) is good enough to win the Karaka Million while last season's "NZ champion 2YO" is yet to place in 5 runs in Aussie. If the Tavistocks are any good, they will end up winning in Aussie - simples!" The POST was referring to 2YO racing! No Tavistock 2YOs have won in Aussie to date! ps: TRAZINO beat a field of 1 wins/maidens and won't win the VRC Derby!
