  1. The Gold Cup was run earlier this morning for a stake of over one million NZ dollars. It was a great race with yet another Irish victory at the carnival. The Irish have certainly dominated. Wonderful ride on the winner. Have to say I was really impressed with the entire carnival. Most of the fields were huge. The quality of the jumping was mostly excellent. The TV coverage was top notch. We can learn so much from the way it works there. The Cheltenham Gold Cup in their Melbourne Cup for the jumpers. These are horses invariably bred for jumping rather than just old flat horses being recycled to stretch out their life. They put genuine priority on jumping rather than just paying lip service to it. The only downside was Trackside via the Australian coverage so often quickly sodding off to Mandurah greyhounds the moment the jumping race crossed the line. A massive crowd on course that are there purely for the races, not fashion parades and bouncy castles. The TV coverage of the race it's self is top drawer. They even have a ticker counting down showing the distance left to the finish. We are well past time here to show NZ racing does not end as soon as any moisture hits the track. The only time we "appear" to put priority on jumping is when Trackside try and hype up a single jumping race just to feather their own nest with a few extra bets. That is quickly put into perspective when they piss off to a dog race before the last horse in the race has even crossed the line. Jumping races here are generally treated with disdain here. Clubs would rather run a boring highweight of 10 runners than an exciting steeplechase of only seven runners as more runners = more turnover.. Trackside don't want to embrace steeplechasing. How many dog races can you fit in for the four or five minutes a jumping race is on? We could have really exciting winter racing rather than what we have now. Most people put their cue in the rack unless they are forced to scratch out a poor income. Ken and Anne Browne did all they could to lift the profile and support jumping races and Kevin Myers etc have continued to carry that torch but they need help from the people in a position to help. How many jumping races will be shit canned this winter due to not enough acceptances? How many jumping races will Trackside sweep under the mat because it may clash with a very average but much shorter race elsewhere? I appreciate jumping races are not for everyone. I make no apology to them. They have all the summer months to have their preference taken care of. Watch this clip and tell me that's not something we should aspire toward in our winter months. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhrUKlQIzTc

  2. We have gone soft if there is a problem with this ride. The sticks are well padded they don't hurt the animals. Lee hasn't broken any rules and I believe it is unfair to call him out for a vigorous ride and sensationalise it to make it sound like he has committed some sort of animal cruelty issue. Unlimited is the amount of times you can hit them from the 200 if your in contention. I respect your opinion Jess and I also agree animal welfare is paramount but I believe in this case your ignorant. (ignorant doesn't mean stupid it just means you don't know) Like I said those sticks are padded and horses have thick skin. The horse wont be hurt in any shape or form. If you watch a mare and foal in a paddock long enough you will see the mares kick the foal in the guts and even put it on the deck when they are being stupid. A hit with a padded stick isn't going to kill them

  7. Race 3, Waikato, "Go Teena" - 14/03/15. Horse thrashed to the line - Magorrian hanging off over its side, head down by its shoulder, with the effort of repeatedly raising the whip striking the horse seemingly as hard as he could. Not the way I'd ever want my horses ridden - so I know what apprentice not to put on. Just a shame that any horse has to cop that sort of punishment What say you honorable stipes? What message will be sent to this rider still in the early stages of his career? What message to other jockeys seeing that ride? And what message to owners who love their horses and value their welfare? And finally what message to those who care not only about the substance - but the image/perception of the industry, and its future - let alone those who want to hang it out to dry on the grounds the whole exercise is cruel ... I'll be watching with interest.

  13. Every week the Informant (at least the online version) have an article telling us about the winners that they tipped over the past week. I particularly enjoy snippets like the following: On Monday at the Egmont meeting the first quaddie was selected of Taipa Tiger – Elegant Assassin – Macklemore – Wheeler Fortune and paid $165.40. They told us to take four horses in each leg which would cost $256. So they tipped the quaddie with four picks in each leg - well done. But we lost 35% of our stake. In fact it's worse because they told us to go light on Douro in leg 3 with a smaller percentage on Macklemore - so we lost more than 35% of our stake. Why publicise that result? (and it happens often)

  16. Do you want a 'kind' rider on your horse who can't get the best out of them and they battle away for 4th or 5th, or a strong, vigorous rider will lift your horse off the canvas and get the best out of them to win, I know who I would rather have on. Have a look at the top few in the premiership, all very strong riders on the finish of a race.

  17. He is without doubt the best apprentice going round.but he could be better if he fine tuned his whip style,eg I have never seen him pull the stick through t the other hand and i would like to see him have a better hold of the reins when riding a hard finish, but his thinking and positioning of a horse in a race is excellent and hence why he has made big strides in the riding ranks. If anyone is under the illusion that these padded sticks cannot hurt a horse, they are Disneyland.I will not tell you who rode our horse, but you could see the welt strips 2 days after he raced,so make no mistake, whilst they have improved, they can still leave an impression on a horse.

Yes, and it looks like I am too late! Breeder, I should have taken your advice, but then again with all the negativity that this site generally permeates I didn't think that there would be too many around even wanting to pay 15k, especially in the CD. It's was only earlier today that someone told me that that racing in the CD was stuffed, so you can see how I was led into a false security of no worries, I will get in! Incidentally, the racing at Trentham today was fantastic, with the tracking playing fairly, with NO bias in sight. Oh to own the Oaks or the Cuddle winner. Gold mines of the future.

  22. I don't think that there has been a better orchestrated betting kill in modern times. The bets placed amounted to 18K on, for a gross return of 136K. The net profit was roughly the same as what Des paid for the filly, plus he has the stake and a filly worth a minimum of [in my opinion] 1m. That's what I call balls, and good on him. We need more of these success stories, to lift the game out of the morass that it is in. P.S. And what a great race it was too.

    What penalty Lee Magorrian?

No one was in the crowd to see it live anyway. Probably the most woeful crowd I have seen at Te Rapa in a hell of a long while. Shame as well as it was a beautiful sunny day, the club tried BBQ and entertainment but no one turned up for it. Really is a classic case of virtually no one knowing that this was even on today, the Te Rapa website is shit & the marketing they do is devoid of any idea. Its no bloody wonder racing is going down the gurgler when you see how pathetic it was there today. The old fossils wandering around in grey suits harking back to racing in the 70's is unfortunately cementing in the f---ed up decisions that NZ racing is making. Yes I could get off my arse and put ideas forward, but its incredibly difficult to get cut through against the grey suits who are very protective of their turf.

  26. 19 people hanging in for the fight (bless you), but only three successful this week: Graeme, Peter and Mike. Lecithin had three placegetters but fell victim to the whim of the tote with Deep Field paying money back. Peter takes the lead - he is trying to continue his record of winning every comp for which I've put up a prize (sounds impressive but there's only been a few, and so far he doesn't have a cent to show for it). 4 Peter 3 Lynzim, Hesi, Cabbage, Cubes, Graeme 2 Jack, Mrzim, Paigezim, Casper, Mrs Cubes, Lecithin, Howie, Mike 1 Final Luca, Porky, Rayzor, John, Steve P

Once again Dunc ol' mate, your habit of flying into a keyboard frenzy, has far outstripped your ability to read, and comprehend, the written word! All I have done is to point out the inescapable correlation between the crack down on milkshaking, and the subsequent demise of a number of trainers - including Mr Brady - who had been returning "suspiciously high" bi-carb readings. Any conclusions you draw from that statement, are entirely of your doing. But judging by the record of these trainers - including Mr Brady - over the past decade or so the milkshaking crackdown has had a detrimental impact on their success. Draw you own conclusions. That fact that you felt the need to rush into print, would suggest that you too think that there is indeed an inescapable conclusion that you felt compelled to defend.

  46. what is performance enhancing - giving a horse water when he's thirsty - nasal strips- I had a horse cool hand luke who was the first to ever wear on in nz. I use them on all my coz for 10 bucks they cant hurt- do they help I don't know. I don't agree they are as good as Lasix- I have had one bleed badly with a nasal strip- my reading says Lasix will stop 99 percent of bleeds- crazy we cant use it here- don't make them go faster but good for animal welfare- remember altitude he prob wouldn't have died- Lasix can be used 4.2 days out . at least it means u can give a fast work and u don't bleed which means there is no inflammation going into a race. the old line trotted out is they are a mask dunno about that but in usa where permitted just about all horses race on them - clearly marked in form guides . not like bute which hides pain I think Lasix stop bleeding- big difference for animal welfare and safety.
