    Winsome Jenny

Roso might have shed some light on this yesterday. As Winsome Jenny was a reserve for the Wellington Cup heats and not guaranteed a start, she was also entered to race on Wednesday 21 Jan at Wanganui. Roso was asking the question how WJ would go as the Group 1 Wellington Cup final would be WJ's 3rd start in 7 days, after a 2 month break from racing. Looks like GRNZ have come to the party, giving a 6 stand down so WJ doesn't have to race Wednesday. LOL NZ greyhound racing is such a circus.

  2. Look at the trainers who did NOT nominate any dogs for the Group 1 race ie Fahey, Clark, Schofield Look at the dogs that did NOT race there ie Fast Archer, Jannick, etc The track needs to be looked at (both surface and rail) In part, I think a lot of the injuries have occurred since that that plastic false rail was installed It makes for very poor viewing of the race on TV and serves no purpose down the back straight as it should only have a use on turns - very few tracks here in Aus have it at all and I would suggest that there is no less falls, interference at Hatrick since its inception Just my opinion on the matter

    Paul Moroney/David Ellis

C'mon boys! This is shaping up to be some sort of unseemly "pissing contest" (excuse the crudeness of the term but it's just so descriptive!) Perhaps Paul just took exception to a bit of Ellis-hyperbole ... it really would be surprising if one individual had physically inspected every yearling from each of the catalogues ... Biggest ... best ... most expensive .... but most astute??? Speaking of the man, always interests me to see how David Ellis gets such enormous press and kudos (admittedly helped by his wife being one of the tv comperes of the sale .....j for simply buying the most expensive yearlings. Do the results on the trackreflect this? Does he who spends the most win the most? I actually love to see a canny player with a great eye for a young horse, who has modest means, spends accordingly - and picks yearlings which turn out to be winners. Now THAT'S what I admire

Thats sad and disappointing. One minute the Rogersons were on top of the world waiting for him to hit the tracks and now must be a gloom over the stable. Are there any lessons to be learnt? Was the horse being pushed too quickly on fast tracks. Why the media blackout. No mention even on the Rogerson website or Informant. Even good old Lloyd down to five words. Or is it before the sales no mention of the pitfalls investing in high priced yearlings.

Zelda, hate to be a killjoy, however Gus Armanasco told me one day, ''Cocaine's not a new drug Biff, it's been around for a century'' and in the old days in Perth when Gus was a leading jockey they [other jocks!] used to put a coke tab under the horses tongue held in place by a piece of cotton, behind the tapes the jock used to bend under the horses neck, pull the tab, and wammo…party time. Leaves one to think that many of the champs of the past were in fact achieving feats of lore whilst receiving some chemical assistance………Food For Thought!

  7. Col you make an interesting point, however, regarding the Pearl series, we have experience of BOBS and VOBIS in Oz, while it makes sense to pay up for those due to their lucrativity, the buy in also is attractive, whereby here the buy in and reward for Pearl is ridiculous [on a comparison] Aaron on the other hand is spot on, an old adage in racing is ''place your horse in the worst company and yourself in the best''…….thats a given, especially in Australia where you can travel 4-5 hours and still race for 15k in a maiden. Here you can travel for 4-5 hours and race for 7k. And most importantly no travel subsidy and raceday rebates…….prize money is paramount, but for Gods sake grass roots owners with journeymen horses need to be rewarded, encouraged and so across the board stakes need a lift and subsidies introduced. Ive said it a thousand times, my nose is bleeding from the effort………you have a population here approaching that of NSW, if they can operate their product as they do and offer prizemoney as they do, for Gods sake the answer is a pineapple is it not? You racing administrators have got it wrong, they are paying themselves a Kings fortune and you are getting what in return? You are a great lot, lovely people Kiwi's, but FMD you are an apathetic bunch! Kick those useless DHeads in Jackson St Taj Mahal into touch, send the import back to where he came from, stop employing useless Poms, employ some passionate and successful Kiwi business personalities, even on a consultancy basis and get on with revival. Racing isn't dead here yet, it nearly is as per Monty Python, before we hear the catch phrase ''bring out your dead''…….do something, I know it's beyond the hop poloi, but it's not beyond the big fish in this industry….I bet if the boss of Cambridge Stud and so forth spewed and frothed something would be done, but I also realise many push their own barrow and agendas, so perhaps the vitriol should originate from owners, trainers and jockeys. Many in fear of their licence criteria will stay shtuum, however owners should speak from the head and heart. Maybe I've got it all wrong, no doubt I'll be pilloried for my views, but apathy shits me, all it takes is gonads and passion, the boys can provide at least 1/2 of that, hopefully all……the gals in this country have a huge part to play so that would be nice to see people like Mrs Logan and Mrs Latta go hard at Petone, we never seem to see the ladies speak their piece…….go for it…….everyone, and the best of luck. It would be lovely to see 12-14k maidens here, and the jocks paid for by the club and the floating/fuel rebates in force, = what a wonderful world…..and not so very hard to find.

  8. If I had a trainer who preferred to run in the Waikato or Avondale Gns in preference to a Gp 1 worth $240k then he/she wouldn't be training the horse for long. Back when the Derby was run on Boxing Day many of the runners had run in the old Wellington Gns on Labour weekend. Didnt hear many complaints about the travel then. Cant help wondering have our horses got softer or just our trainers etc? Rumpole the fact that Gaultier was a maiden going into the race is not relevant. If there had been more nominations he would have been left out based on his form. It wasnt a capacity field so no horse could have possibly been inconvenienced by him running. Good luck to his connections - hope theres plenty more to celebrate.

  11. Would this be the worst undercard for a group 1 night ever? The only 2 C5s are the cup and sprint final. I hope some serious questions are being asked as to WHY this is. I'm sure everyone on here knows, but if nothing changes then sadly this will become the norm. 2 C1's and 3 C2's on a premier nights racing with 8 sprint's scheduled. Ewww

  12. Goodness me rdytdy only one horse can win The Derby, we are still well over a month away and that's the reason trainers give for not fronting up for a Group 1 1600 metres. Well the best of luck to Gaultier in The Derby, I hope he makes those trainers look foolish

Sheepy... No one is questioning the trainer's right to nominate on Wednesday after being drawn as a reserve on Friday and no one is questioning WJ's deserved place in the Group 1 final. If the rules allow for the dog to be scratched without penalty then scratch the dog with out penalty on Wednesday. Why stand it down on Friday 16 Jan for 6 days in the Stewards Report Citing Rule 82.1???

Did he have Jail Gaol as one of his Goals............. he clearly hadn't heard the TAB advise to gamble responsibly. Anyway I can think of at least three racing buddies with him where he's going.

EsquireNZ, an all others who 'liked' that comment, please explain how you can nz greyhound racing can be summed up as a circus after making such a wonderful and correct decision? Don't quote me, but it may even be an Australian rule. I know here in Australia a dog can be scratched non-penalty if it was scheduled to race before a group final. The trainer had every right IMO to nominate for Wednesday after only drawing as a reserve on the Friday. Or else her dog could have been sitting in her kennel for another week. WJ fully deserves her place in the final after an impressive track debut on Friday and fully deserves to have the best preperation leading up to a group race. Not having to line up against a bunch of erratic c1's an 2 days out from her main assignment. If this sensible decision hadn't been made all of you would then be on here complaining about her lining up Friday as a welfare issue. James

  18. Yes great to see you guys didn't Hesi.tate with your two new signings, no doubt will prove a Ray of light to the Hot Pot franchise. Yes like yourself Ziggy, Alan and I had to take a hefty pay cut to ensure our Captain Roger and Nekky resigned after both received massive offers to commit elsewhere, fortunately both lads knew where the strength laid. As for Ian we have left him on his over paid contract, as come March his contract states he only receives match winning payments only as this coincides with his distractions to his League team, so when they win he gets paid, it's pretty much a 75% reduction as you could imagine, I've done my best to guide him over to the strength the Mighty Bronc's but to no avail You know what they say Ziggy you can take the horse out of NZ, but you can never take the NZ out of the horse Looking forward to meeting the Canes in battle, but we have had to take a ticket behind the Blues who want to deal with you lot first Just like to wish TD a speedy recovery hopefully we will see him back on here soon. Just one other thing Ziggy love your Avatar (Spooky)

Winner gets free entry... next best 15 scores qualify. Bottom 2 miss out/become reserves. I'm confident I would win this and would like the opportunity to prove my wares.

    Trentham crowd

Sorry to say I'll be in Oz on business Cup day, however I did attend Telegraph day and enjoyed it immensely. As I mentioned, it was a damn shame to see the club arrange for all the food and drink vans plus the great band and only a handful in the public to enjoy! Quite a few from the members ventured down just to enjoy the entertainment. The day wasn't marketed to it's optimum in my opinion, Trentham has strengths, marketing isn't one of them. In fact, marketing the product here is abysmal, it should be outsourced to professionals. As for the positive attitude re Oz Insider, that's the wrong word 'positive' at the moment, and in any case I'm no fan of certain aspects of Oz racing, the ATC in particular. The disgrace of the new grandstand at Randwick and its wasteful usage, the merge that alienated half of Sydney which resulted in the loss of brilliant minds to the industry. I could go one, but might leave it until we share a beer, maybe at a later date Insider.

  30. The key issue is, "What direction will be given to him by the Board?". He can only devise a means to deliver on the strategy that is laid down by his Board. If the Board don't provide a clear direction then you can't blame the CEO. It's vital that the Board understand the challenges and the change that's necessary, then direct him to come back to the Board with his plan. I am here assuming that there are Board Sub-Committees with responsibilities allocated?????

Richard Callendar and Malcolm Johnston have a terrible grasp of english yet are fantastic presenters and extremely popular. Racing is about turnover presenters speaking the queens english will have no impact on that. Sure it might be annoying but its not worth worrying about. Per Incanto

From memory Centaine had about 20 2Y0 winners from his first crop, about 8 or so by the January sales. Straight Stike also did very well with around 17 first crop 2YO winners. I think even Khairpour may have had 6 or 7 winners by the time of the January yearling sales in hist first season. No doubt Per Incanto going very well so good luck to the LA team. I wonder if the 2YO competition is as strong today as it was 20 or 30 years back. Seems to be less 2Yo racing in general to me.

One of the best tracks in nz at what? Creating injuries? Obscuring punters & stewards vision? Lure height? "Top" trainers unallowed to have a dog under their name? All of the above? If you were talking over all, I'd rate it in the lower half of a top ten list.

  41. You need horses to run races, they will be good, bad or mediocre depending on the field they are up against, and that's what makes it a race and worth betting on and watching... Thank goodness for all of them. I guess this guy doesn't want a job because if owners/trainers only raced world beaters we'd have bugger all to watch, commentate on and bet on and he'd be out the back door. I also hate it when I hear or read people making a joke out of the horses and in turn the owners and trainers of them. There's no need for it and in fact I get quite upset for them as I know they probably love their horse and so it does hurt, and I either don't bother reading stuff by that writer any more, I don't watch them if they are presenting or commentating, and I just go and do something else that doesn't involve racing.

The point of this thread is that people are being employed to present on TV. I have no doubt that the job isn't easy. BUT that is what they are employed for and like it or not the ability to speak properly is part of their job description. In my case I really wanted to play professional football (lacked physical skills), be an astronaut (scared of heights), or ride horses (weigh 95kg). In other words there were reasons I couldn't get the job because I had a skill deficit or inability to do the job. Same should apply to these people (unless perhaps they are outstanding in another facet). To criticise people here for pointing out how public broadcasters annoy them makes no sense to me (ie you are criticising someone for criticising someone). But fair play to you all. Jape I am sure I have butchered the language here - but I'm not getting paid as an English professor

I was not mentioned on the Jape critique - my mother would be proud, in fact, I hope she reads this. She is rather partial to correct usage of the English language herself. One thing I would say though Michael, they are not talking to themselves for hours, they are talking to a rather large audience and they are providing a service, a service that is supposedly in place to retain listeners and along with the listener, their betting dollar. It is not an easy profession being a presenter, however it is a profession they have chosen, which means that they should always strive to do it professionally and any feedback is good feedback. This feedback can only come from their viewing public, just as a movie or book review would rely on. If they can review the feedback, think about it, work on what they believe is warranted, and then shrug off the rest, so be it, but good or bad, feedback is useful if you want to provide a service that you are striving to improve both on a personal level, and for those that you are employed by.

Ian will need to drop at least 75% of his current salary. Probably give back the Merc and maybe start paying some "rent" at the Marriot as well. That should allow you to full your team under the cap

  46. Very accurate point from what i have heard on the grapevine. One candidate with impeccable credentials did not even get to first base ( interview with HR company ) until a few bods found out and made their displeasure known to top table. Was given a token interview thereafter but knew they were never seriously going to be considered for position. The upside to the outcome was that the wandering ozzie did not get the job.

  47. They're just p.r/administration people with no real world leadership skills and no knowledge of the industry. They know what to say in the job interview and how to be evasive and answer without answering when it comes to pressure from the industry. You know those conversations where you walk away after they've talked for ten minutes and you can't actually remember what they said because they were so busy doing gymnastics with their words and throwing out the phrase of the week. One of them was described by the media as 'the ultimate PR and fix it woman who solves problems by burying them'.

  48. I saw this horse in his first start at Matamata on 12th November. He missed the start by about 20 lengths, then finished sixth of twelve. I thought I could make a quid on him in a maiden race. So I did not back him to win a group one! Apparently the two stones removed from him had been very badly bruised, so when Michael Coleman got him to the outside with 400 metres to go the horse said to himself; "This galloping at speed game is now good fun, whereas it used to be bloody painful. Let me go!"
