  1. Just noticed that Race 7 at Te Rapa makes the cut this week. A filly I have a small share in (Matagouri) is going round in that race. In the interests of fairness and full disclosure I should let the Kats know that the run on the bottomless track at Trentham has really set her back and her recent trackwork has been awful - wouldn't touch her with a barge-pole.

    Nomination Fees

Cubes reckons this has probably been discussed before but we are newbies so here is our opinion...... Maths might be a bit funky but Cubes guesses 40,000 nominations a year at average 50 buckeroos a pop 2 million income for NZTR BUT......annoys the heck out of this owner and we are sure others Also admin fees etc must be incurred in the collectingness of these nomination fees Conclusion : Scrap nomination fees Any Racecafers got any comments ?

  3. As a spectacle the jumping Ellerslie was far superior, especially watching the magnifent jumping over the live fences in the course centre and on the hill and after racing over long distances very close finishes. Compare that to watching fat men in carts getting pulled twice around a saucer in under 2 minutes. I wouldn't walk across the road to watch the Jewels but would walk ten miles on stony ground to watch yesterday's jumping. What ever floats your boat I guess.

  4. Congratulations to Catriona Williams on receiving a Queen's Birthday medal for her services to Catwalk Trust, Spinal injury research. Well done & such a recognition is long overdue. As aside some of you may have seen we have placed the link to Acclaim Otago's latest survey on ACC, "Access to Justice" in the topic Acc discussion & support in the Mainstreet section of Race cafe. It would be appreciated if you all take the time to complete this survey as it all helps those that have injuries, including spinal injuries, their rights to access justice. Racing as we all know has those that suffer injuries & have a tough time accessing their rightful assistance. Feel free to spread the link to others through Facebook, twitter, email etc and be mindful it only runs for around another week. Thanks in advance. Keep up the excellent work Catriona & your team at Catwalk.

  5. I take it the barrier draws at the Brisbane carnival can be attended by owners/trainers. Poor Tony Pike should go to Jupitars and try his lucky no. @ Roulette...marble may drop.

  6. It's always been a dream of mine to have a boutique casino at Ellerslie. I know I know, there are probably 10,000 issues with having one, but to think about the possibility of this gets me excited. To think of all the large gamblers hanging around Sky City, wouldn't it be a good thing to have them on course? Where they can punt and play casino games? It would bring back a 1920's nostalgia where backing race horses and gambling would be an occasion, as opposed to a click of the mouse. Yes, 99% of people in this otherwise backwards game would disagree, but dreams are free right? And Ellerslie (for example) has about 10 beautiful rooms in the Members Stand that go unused. I'd love to see a Punters Room on track where wise cracks and newbies mix, tips and advice given. Where the punter is put first.

  8. Lloydy ... I've checked with Captain 'LastRaceHorrorsAreOverof40' as to my 'modus operandi' for this Saturday and he says I'm poised ready to strike ! (much to my long-suffering team-mates relief ) so watch out my friend Lloydy ... the brakes are coming off and I'm thinking I'll be good for 560 into the team bank . Watch that space ! Only setback is that having lent the Jafa-o-Meter last Saturday to the up-to-that-date winless Captain 'LastWinIHadWas2007of40', he was so impressed at going from 0-3 to 1-3 he 's been very tardy at handing the Jafa-o-Meter back to me, muttering something about "all team assets are vested in the Captaincy' . But no matter, come Saturday I'm confident my native cunning will see me home with those 560 dollars into the team bank. Hope you can stay with the hot pace, Lloydy . GO US MIGHTY JAFAS !

  10. The Terra Keroma's have been flying since the start, I did a thread on them a while back. I see there's quite a few coming through too so hopefully he'll have more success soon.

  12. Yeah the boy did good and no I went fixed in the morning at $4 a place and dam well blew out on the tote, couldn't believe it!. Like to point out that Rick's Terra is Beersies litter brother and ran fastest time of the day in 18.50 with Beersies length and quarter behind him. Pretty stoked as Rick's was a third win in a row and my chap was back from two month injury break which has done him a world of good. Terra Keroma's offspring starting to kick off on the track, sprinting so far but you never know.

  13. I agree in part..... I love watching the jumping racing anywhere in NZ. But the crop of jumpers we have racing at the moment are fairly average, with the exception of a couple. But overall.....bad. That shows that nobody wants to spend the time and money on jumpers anymore...for so little return. They are poor turnover races....greens want them banned....and trainers and owners are giving up on them. How long will they be racing over fences? I doubt not too long....and if they do continue....there wont be many races each year will there? Not surprising that Ted loved the Monday racing with old hacks.....but wont give the time of day to the best harness horses in NZ. Some people will never change....we know that...Real good that some great gallops owners and trainers are having fun and winning with the harness code.....good on them. Wish them all the luck.

  14. It's tough in front with some sitting nicely just off the pace but Geoff and Howie are under strangleholds and when they let down it's going to be very tough to make up ground !

  17. Harness racing is simply awful and in no way should thoroughbred racing have been tarnished by having to share the same stage on a sacrosanct Saturday. Just stay with the normal after dark where less people can see the shenanigans or Sundays where folk can cleanse themselves at church before they partake. Any sport that requires a horse to wear more gear than Aunt Flora's B&D in Cambridge's red light district has to be suss.

  23. Another Southland season is finished so I'll bump the thread for your perusal. I'll be back next season when the highlight will hopefully be Clark Barron becoming the first ever Southland based driver to drive 1000 winners...he's 22 away. I also expect Dexter, the Williamson brothers and Tim Williams to continue to rocket up the list. See you in August.

  28. speaking of let downs Once upon a time there 3 balloons, mummy balloon, daddy balloon, and baby balloon. Tired of baby balloon creeping into their bed every night, "Tonight you must stay in your own bed" said mummy. When he was sure his mummy and daddy were asleep baby balloon crept into their room and tried to squeeze into their bed. But try as he might he just couldn't fit in, so he undid the bottom of his mummy and let tiny bit air out of her. But to his dismay he still couldn't fit in, so he crept round to his daddy's side of the bed and undid his daddy's knot and let a little bit of air out. Again he tried to squeeze in but still couldn't quite fit. So he undid himself and let a little bit of air out. Then he fitted in nice and snuggly and fell sound asleep. When his mum woke up she was furious! "Get into your own room at once and think of what you have done young man!" she shouted "I am so disappointed in you! Not only have you let me down and your father down, you've let yourself down too!"

  29. Race 10 at Wanganui tonight, Blitzing Mayhem@1.90ff. In career best form but this is a strong field with plenty of early pace so no place for an odds on favourite. Thought he was too short at $2.50 and has been backed in.
