Racecourse Drunkeness
emiliana and one other reacted to Tauhei Notts for a topic
I saw something yesterday at Ellerslie that could be a problem developing. The drunken louts after the last race emerging from the Whips and Spurs function. They weren't just drunk as I was when refused entry to Cowboys in Queenstown a few months ago. They were terribly aggressive. The big big Pacific Islander bouncers seemed to handle the problems with aplomb. But the one problem is that the Pacific Islander bouncers cost so much that an entry fee must be escalated to cover the expense of security. But if it costs so much to enter then I must get horribly shit faced drunk to get my money's worth. That seems to be the twisted logic (wrong word?) applied. Interestingly, the women were not pissed. Well, not like what I have seen at Flemington on Oaks Day. I get the impression that the aggressive drunken louts were serious businessmen during the week, but white trash at weekends. It is a pity that racing clubs will need to spend so much on security in the future to supervise those drunken, aggressive louts. And those few security guards that have the intelligence to handle piss addled dickwits in a polite and caring but very very firm manner, demand high wages. And they earn their very high wages! Please don't take this comment as that of a wowser. I enjoy a drink or ten. A few years ago I turned up at the Christchurch Casino at 2.30 a.m. "Have you been drinking, sir?" the doorman asked. Although drunk I still had enough wit to reply; "Of course sir. If I came to an outfit that employed people like you, sober at 2.30 a.m. I would know that I have a problem"2 points -

This one's going straight to the pool room Ernie alongside your "Haylist will beat Black Caviar" prediction. :) Lloyd told me to tell you today if you could refrain from tipping any more of his horses this campaign. Ernie horse stopper indeed!!2 points

Hey biff, have a good trip. Before you go I would like to say, this industry would be stuffed without those who are supportive onlookers. Unless those within the breeding industry, those who purchase the product, trainers, jockey's etc want to fund the game by themselves. You have made some valid points but so have others who do not share your opinions.1 point -

I'll be coming in too Jason. Thanks1 point -
This back to back meeting didn't work IMO. The rail out 3M on Cox Plate is a disgrace with a 14 horse field on a course such as Mooney Valley where you see more hard luck stories than any other track in Australia... I'd love to see the field size reduced to 10-12 horses and focused on horses trying to win the WFA championship, not using the race as a build to the Melbourne Cup.1 point

Sorry for my silence, I'm about to leave for Europe for a trade show [and as luck would have it All Blacks and RLWC] much to my wife's concern, so i'll quickly address this poor sods comments for perhaps the last time in several weeks. In an earlier post I aluded to the fact this was hardly a classic CP field. Also, if you watched the Underwood carefully you would have spotted several unlucky or nice runs behind the placegetters. I did, and have followed those horses since, so I'm in profit. And would have been further in profit if HT had not been so tardy away from the barrier yesterday, it cost him the race. Having said that I backed my horses I mentioned earlier in this thread, Long John and Fiorente, and threw in Happy Trails also. I couldn't have the winner although I don't begrudge him the win at all. He won because many of the better horses suffered from bad rides or bad luck in running [thats racing init]..........if AJ had of been in the race the tactics of several would have been different, and I would think a vastly different result. One thing is for sure, Baker succumbed to temptation, he wont be the first and wont be the last......the horse had missed work and gallops, you can't do that and win a Cox Plate........full marks to the winning trainer and his team, the jock got it right with his ride, no weight, a fit horse, and had all that improvement in him......he brought his A game to the track and got his rewards.1 point

Back in the 80's I worked on a radio station in Christchurch. My shift was routinely "late". Was a midnight toker back then but smoking anything in the studio frowned upon. As a result I'd pick one of my fav songs and play it while I went outside for some fresh air This song that went for almost 10 minutes was my fresh air song. A little later when the munchies kicked in I would mention how wonderful the pizza outlet on bla bla street was and how I'd recommend it personally. Without fail 20 minutes later I'd have a complimentary delicious pizza delivered to the station. Those who knew me also knew what I was doing whenever this song was played so was often their cue to come hang out1 point -

Ernie can certainly improve 6L on his solo trial; first look at the track, first time outside SA, straight from the plane to the track. The bad news is he has to improve 9L, which might be asking a bit much. He should get out and clear though (albeit outside and just behind POO), so depending on what happens behind him he could hold on for a place.1 point -

The worst named greyhound ever will probably win, and the $4 available looks great. I'm a big fan of Ernie Bung Arrow (how can you not like an $800 pup from SA taking on the big boys?) and Glen Gallon and I'd love to see Glen Gallon win his last race, but I don't think it'll happen.1 point -

Is this guy biff for real???? "AJ never faced that quality". Memsie Stakes 2013 1) Atlantic Jewel 2) Ferlax (Australian Guineas winner 2013) 3) Super Cool (Australian Cup winner 2013) 4) It's a Dundeel (self explanatory) 5) Green Moon (Melbourne Cup winner 2012) 6) Fiorente (Melbourne Cup 2nd 2012) 7) Happy Trails (Emirates winner 2012 & Turnbull winner 2013) Have you heard of the phrase "like shooting fish in a barrel" biff??? "AJ never faced that quality" Very indulgent in non facts indeed. lol1 point -

This race is becoming more competitive every year and this year is no exception. Take a look of the run from Mount Athos in the race last year. If he has an ounce of luck this year he'll be very hard to beat.1 point -

Ernie, Ernie, Ernie. This coming from the guy who said Hay List was going to beat Black Caviar & we all know what happened there don't we. Sunline was beaten at her 9th start by Rose O'War and had only won a single group 1 (Flight Stakes) at that stage. Atlantic Jewel was beaten at her 10th start by Dundeel and had won 3 group 1's (1000 Guineas, All Aged Stakes & Memsie) at that stage. AJ wouldn't have won the CP???? On what are you basing that on exactly?? The same logic that you had saying that Haylist was going to beat Black Caviar?? I see you also said the trainer of Americain won 10 Arcs when he only in fact won 2. You starting to lose it Ernie?1 point -

Given how a lot of the big guns are drawn wider, it probably leaves the race open to a sit and sprint. With a light weight and an inside draw maybe Shamus Award could try to pinch a break down the side?1 point -
