Time to end Jumps in the South?

I am a fan of jumps racing myself Pam, but there seems to be no real interest from either trainers or administrators. In the SI in particular it has been very poorly managed. I have no idea why they don't run maidens and 0-1 win races for jumpers to give them confidence and generate a bit of form as they work through the grades. It seems strange to me that they programme open ended jumps races and then when maiden or at best one win horses pay up they run them as $20,000 open races, weird really. I would like to see more emphasis on hurdlers since there is more scope for better fields then. I think the season needs to run into the Spring so they get better tracks, and there needs to be encouragement for horses to mix flat and jumps racing, as they do in Australia; no idea how that might be achieved. I don't really blame trainers for not getting involved this season as there is no real encouragement for them, but do you think there would be any interest from trainers if the season was better organised? Canterbury trainers don't seem interested at all. I know you have a hurdler and the Parsons have their good jumper, but beyond that there doesn't seem to be much interest in Canterbury. Surely the industry can't really sustain another jumps season like this one? There must be some concern for the National meeting. Most of the fields will have to come from the North.

We have actually had some pretty good flat horses turn to jumping in NZ over the years. mostly hurdling. And in Australia they often mix hurdling and flat racing, which I am a big fan off.

wouldn't surprise if the police have got it wrong. Example last week a prominent trainer interviewed at Otaki explaining the better performance. "We tweaked her blood". That would be 95% certain an injection. i.e. an enhanced performance via an injection. So how do you define "performance enhancing" if its just correcting a malady? If horses receiving a vitamin injection were banned I doubt there would be sufficient for a horse race.

Slow horses off flat never going to be high class . Most of the top line jumpers in only countries that have serious jump racing UK, Ireland and France bred for one thing , jump racing , ex flat horses do win good races but they need to be good and most don't hit the heights over the big fences . Keep an eye on On Kileys Run in Aussie . A real proper jumps pedigree , bred for the job. Think he had a point to point outing at Down Royal in Northern Ireland a couple years back but has won his last two steeplechase trials in Victoria . Be interesting to see how he goes around the flatter quicker Aussie courses more suited to ex flat horses as they brush through tops of fences.

Two more arrested to now.....deserves to enjoy his porridge.... Ben Currie arrested, charged with fraud over racing allegations Ben Currie. Photo: News Limited. Article Author Ben Dorries3:27PM25 June 2019 Disgraced Queensland trainer Ben Currie has been arrested and charged with aggravated fraud, facing allegations he sourced performance enhancing substances for his horses and dishonestly claimed the winnings. Currie was arrested in his home town of Toowoomba following a 14-month-long investigation by the Queensland Racing Crime Squad. Police will allege he “engaged in systematic fraudulent behaviour” between November, 2016 and March 2019. "It is alleged the offender has engaged in systematic fraudulent behaviour over a period from November 2016 to March 2019 where he has sourced and administered unregulated horse supplements designed to enhance race performance in a manner to circumvent current testing methodology in Queensland thoroughbred racing," a Queensland Police statement said. "As a result, it is further alleged the offender has dishonestly gained a benefit through entitlement to prize money distributed by Racing Queensland for thoroughbred races in Queensland over that time. "The man has been charged with one count of aggravated fraud (Criminal Code) and has been bailed to appear in the Toowoomba Magistrates Court July 15, 2019." Outside the Toowoomba police station, Currie claimed he had no idea what he was being charged with. “I don’t even know what the charges are to be honest,” he said. “I don’t even know what it’s about.” Currie’s disqualification from racing was recently increased to 7-1/2 years after he received a new ban on charges which included racing two horses with cocaine in their system. Currie had previously been disqualified for 4-1/2 years for race day treatment (two years) and 2-1/2 years on two charges of improper action following an investigation into text messages relating to a jigger. He hasn’t trained a runner since May 2 as officials refused his horse nominations even before the bans were imposed. Queensland Racing Integrity Commissioner Ross Barnett said while he could not comment on the Queensland Police investigation into Currie, he said it arose from QRIC's’ "protracted and ongoing investigation into Currie Racing that commenced on 7 April 2018.' “This Racing Crime Squad investigation has been carried out independently from the Commission but we have provided support as requested including technical advice from our Racing Science Centre chemists,” Barnett said. “During the period of these alleged charges Mr Currie was a licensed thoroughbred trainer in Queensland. “This investigation again demonstrates the importance of the partnership between the Commission and the Racing Crime Squad and the value of them being seconded to the Commission to deal with allegations of criminal conduct which arise during our investigations into the Queensland racing industry.”

Sure repent and all is well. Is that what happens to the Catholic Priests? They have their wicked way and then repent and go to heaven. If you believe that sort of shit mate good on you.

A very good question that perhaps RITA will address as it looks to reset the industry. An area that has been neglected by NZTR. I think that jumping is an integral part of racing and must continue.

That NZ Herald post from 10th May. Now I know why Leo so hates that rag. It is so far from the truth that it described him as former champion jockey!!!

Time to end Jumps in the South?

I thought it might be time to throw out an actual Racing subject for a change, with all of the other subjects being debated at the moment. Is it time just to pull the pin on jumps racing in the SI? I note Wingatui this week has 6 hurdlers going around in an open $20,000 race, despite mustering just one hurdle win among the whole field. And the Chasers have a field of just 5, also going around for $20,000 in an open class race, despite just two steeple wins amongst the whole field. So it can't really be argued that the money isn't there. $40,000 for 11 fairly ordinary types is surely not sustainable, and the money could be put to better use elsewhere: 2yos and 3yos perhaps. There aren't many trainers involved, so really would anyone notice if jumps racing stopped in the South after this Grand National meeting? There used to be a time when all winter meetings had to programme a jumps race, but now we have got used to whole programmes purely for flat horses in the winter months. There are enough flat horses in the South to sustain the current number of meetings without the jumpers. The CJC, as the lead club in the South, has lost all interest, except for the National Week novelty. There appears to be no desire or enthusiasm to try and make jumping work. I suspect the powers that be have actually tried to run it down to the point where they can say: "that's it, there is no interest, jumps racing is finished." Well, we have now reached that point. Would anyone really notice, or care, if it stopped?

John Allen must be sued !!!

We really need answers to questions. Hopefully some whistle blowers from those organisations involved. I understand there have been a number of Indian programmers imported into Petone most probably at minimal salary whereas the American & UK owners of the OpenBet business sitting back have creamed all the loot. Those coming into Petone it would fair to say would not have the slightest knowledge of racing or wagering for that matter. The actual details is where the whistle blowers are needed. The whole project as is normal should have been separated out. i.e. the race form completely separate to wagering as well as fixed odds separate to tote betting. Once all the units functioning then the everything could have been integrated. Handing everything over to one outfit a huge mistake. Many years of work i.e. work that had not become obsolete seems to have been discarded thats is an absolute disgrace. Perhaps Glenda Hughes is the one to be sued bit like Jenny Shipley another National stalwart and now even John Key is shown up as ignorant. The real business innovator in the political ranks has been Jim Anderton who set up Kiwi Bank to the massive objection to the so called business orientated National Party.

    Bob Jones on Israel Folau

So let me get this straight. Israel Folau not only promoted gay rugby, but he was also described as being a STRONG ADVOCATE for ending all forms of discrimination in the sport. His crime therefore, is not that he treats Gay people badly or that he discriminates against them (as clearly he is very supportive of them), but that he believes that all sinners (including gay sinners) need to repent in order to get into heaven. The whole media beat up is a storm in a teacup that has been labelled a Category 5 hurricane. Shit Ted when are you going to get an opinion of your own rather than cutting and pasting and then stating that you are right and soemone else is wrong? It just goes to show the character of this idiot Folau. He says that in his younger days he was a rooter and a piss head and then he supports Gays only to turn on the rooters, piss heads and gays and say that they are heading to hell.

Partly right Crusty, the Bank with the swaps issue was National Bank which ANZ bought about 16 years ago. John Key showed that he was just another useless Tory PM turned Director with his spin about David Hisco's demise and blaming some office junior for the Reserve Bank regulation stuff up.

    Bob Jones on Israel Folau

Bullshit! This proves it. The Media’s Homophobic Lie by SB Israel Folau has been smeared repeatedly by the media as homophobic and his tweet has been deliberately mischaracterized as homophobic. They even described his speech in his home church as homophobic when it was anything but. Those two lies, however, are not the biggest lies told by the media. The biggest lie has been their lie of omission. What if I were to tell you that they have chosen to omit a news story that would blow their accusation of homophobia right out of the water? The man they keep smearing as homophobic allowed his image to be used to promote Gay Rugby’s biggest tournament. Yes, really. Israel Folau along with Adam Ashley-Cooper helped promote the 2014 Bingham Cup gay rugby tournament. Does that sound to you like the actions of a homophobic man? STAR OBSERVERAdam Ashley-Cooper and Israel Folau help promote the 2014 Bingham Cup gay rugby tournament. So let me get this straight. Israel should be happy to spend his wealth fighting his Court battle, because Jesus says "Truely I say to you, only with difficulty will a rich person enter the kingdom of heaven." Matthew 19:23. And if you don't enter heaven that only leaves the place where all those homosexuals and fornicators are going. "
