Runner-up Marmelo and beaten favourite Yucatan were found to be lame following Tuesday’s $7 million Melbourne Cup..
The $6 favourite was found to be “two out of five lame” after finishing 11th, as did Hughie Morrison’s second placegetter.
“He worked into a nice spot from the gate, travelled really nicely but I felt he just didn’t stay the two miles,” Yucatan’s jockey James McDonald said after the race.
The news on Yucatan ended a forgettable day for the horse’s ownership group headed by Lloyd Williams and son Nick, chasing their third straight Melbourne Cup victory.
Their other runner, The Cliffsofmoher was euthanised after fracturing a shoulder approaching the winning post the first time.
