COUPLAND’S FINISH A WIN, WIN

COUPLAND’S FINISH A WIN, WIN

Who can forget last year’s dramatic finish to the Coupland’s Mile?

In the public stand, Michael Pitman was thinking he had won with Son of Maher. .A few metres  away in front of the members stand, Mark Oulaghan was sure he was second with Shadows Cast..

Turns out, they were both wrong.

The result was a dead heat.

Son Of Maher and Shadows Cast were forced to share the spoils. They were separated by less than one-thousandth of a second.

Before judge Mark Gallagher announced the result, no neutral observers in the birdcage were willing to declare a winner.

Complicating the view of the finish was the fact that Shadows Cast was in front but Son Of Maher was driving at him with the momentum on his side.

It created a bizarre scene. Nobody from club officials to media or even the owners of the two horses knew where to look or what to do.

Even when the result was announced, the awkwardness continued when neither group of owners knew whether to head to the winner’s dais or not. However, both parties were excepting of the result and could see the humorous side to the dilemma.

The pair renew their rivalry today. A repeat result would be 1000-1. Standing in their way is a horse called Te Akau Shark.
