Margaret Larsen rather not say how much it has cost getting one-time Auckland Cup hopeful Cafe Culture back to the races.
But you can bet it’s a lot.
He hasn’t raced since since March 2016 when he tore the tendons in both forelegs.
It looked career over for the 9yo winner of five but Larsen had different ideas. Plasma was inserted into the tendons and a long period of rehab was under way.
The path to recovery has not been a smooth one but when Cafe Culture steps out on to the Hastings track on Saturday it will be mission accomplished.
“We are taking everything day to day from now,” said Larsen. “How far we take him will depend on how he pulls up Saturday.”
Larsen still hasn’t appointed a jockey. She is looking for someone who won’t thrash him in the run to the line.
