Participating in the Forums

Something doesn't work. What's wrong?
Visit the Help Desk - 99% of all problems are covered there. If this doesn't help, fill out the Technical Fault Report.

I'm new to this forum. What do I need to know?
Wether or not you are familiar with internet forums, you need to read our Operating Policy - it is different to many other forums. Then have a bit of a look around the Help Desk to see how things work, especially Registration. Finally, spend some time reading previous forum messages to get a feel for the community here.

Do I need to register?
Although you can read messages and enjoy other parts of the site without being registered, you will need to register if you want to participate.

Why has my message not published?
See our Operating Policy.

What About my Right to Free Speech?
See our Postion on Free Speech.

How do I lodge a complaint about something I've seen here?
See the Complaints Page.

User Identities & Information

What are Profiles? How do I make one? How do I change my Profile?
You must register to create a profile. See the Profiles Page.

Do I have to give my real name and email address?
No. You may use either your real name or a nom-de-plume. Be aware that nom-de-plumes may be taken less seriously by other users than a real name.
Email addresses are optional -- when you post a message you don't have to enter anything in the "Email Address" if you don't want to.

How can I tell if the person who posted a message is really who they say they are?
See next question...

What does the "ID" icon mean?
This icon indicates the status of the person who posted the message. See Status Icons.

Why don't you make everyone use their real name?
(1) Many people have genuine reasons for wanting to remain anonymous. In order to keep this forum as open as possible we need to respect that.
(2) Enforcing such a rule is impractical. If someone wants to remain anonymous they will -- to the point of creating a false identity if necessary. A nom-de-plume is more honest than a fake name.
(3) Many people enjoy using an alias. If the person has a profile, check it out - they may well have their real name displayed there.

Policies

What is your privacy policy?
Any information you post in our forums is considered public domain. All information you provide in other forms at this website, or in emails to us, is considered completely confidential and will not be divulged to any other party without your permission, unless legal action is involved. In addition, emails we send to users are considered confidential and we ask recipients to treat them as such.

Why are your rules so strict? / Why are your rules so relaxed?
We are asked these two questions in roughly equal proportions. The fact is that some people think our operating policy is excessively rigid, whilst other feel it is too permissive. We obviously can't please everyone. Our policy has been developed over time, with a great deal of input from our users and independent research. We believe it is the most appropriate policy to facilitate the goals of this website.

More Questions

What does (NM) in a subject line mean?
"NM" stands for "No Message" - meaning that the message contains no text. There are two possible reasons for this:
(1) The message is contained in the subject line. For example, if you wanted to post a message thanking someone for their help, you could simply enter "Thank you" in the subject line and leave the message box blank. That way everyone can see what you're saying without having to open the message.
(2) The message has been posted accidentally, before the user had entered their message. The most common cause of this problem is hitting the keyboard "Enter" key, which causes the message form to be submitted. We usually remove these messages.
