Photo: Darryl Sh Racing Victoria’s chief steward Terry Bailey has quit to take up a position in Singapore. Victoria’s racing rumour mill has been in overdrive on this topic since the autumn and Bailey has refused to give anything away on the matter, including again at Flemington on Saturday. Racing Victoria confirmed Bailey’s resignation in a statement on Monday morning. Bailey will finish up at RV on July 11 to take a break before starting his role as the Chairman of Stewards at the Singapore Turf Club. Bailey has been Victoria’s chief steward for more than 10 years after taking over when Des Gleeson retired. Bailey has overseen some big cases in his time with the long-running cobalt saga and the Aquanita Racing scandal and had shots fired at his home in the spring of 2015. RV chief executive Giles Thompson saluted Bailey’s tenure in a statement on Monday. "Terry has given tremendous service to Racing Victoria for more than a decade and he has our support and best wishes as he embarks on the exciting next chapter of his career abroad," Thompson said. "Terry is highly respected for his unwavering focus on administering the Rules of Racing and ensuring that all participants and customers can compete on a level playing field. "During his time with RV he has been determined to ensure that Victorian racing is successful, and he has done that through strong and fearless administration of the rules. It hasn't always been easy, but Terry has given his all. "Terry can look back fondly on his achievements during his time with RV and I want to thank him on behalf of all participants and stakeholders in Victorian racing for his dedication and commitment over many years." Jamie Stier, Racing Victoria’s Executive General Manager – Integrity Services, will oversee the search for Bailey’s replacement. Fartoomuch 1,376 Report post Posted June 12, 2018 The word of the people on various Ozzie chat sites is basically good riddance. Tough job being a Steward though IMHO.
flockofewes2 216 Report post Posted June 13, 2018 A judicial officer with balls. The entitled will be glad to see him gone.Long time since NZ racing had one made of the same stuff. gary1
Fartoomuch 1,376 Report post Posted June 13, 2018 This sort of sums things up courtesy of Racenet WHAT TO MAKE OF TERRY BAILEY? Departing Victorian chief steward Terry Bailey is an intriguing character and there have already been people lining up to kick him as he prepares to walk off into the Singapore sunset. But he also has received plenty of high-powered support, with the Lindsay Park stable and hifalutin owner Lloyd Williams giving him bouquets rather than brickbats. So how will history regard Bailey’s colourful tenure? The answer to that vexed question depends on what side of the fence you sit on – Bailey is such a polarising character that people either love him or can't stand him. There is virtually no grey area. One thing I will say about Bailey is, rightly or wrongly, he is a man of his convictions. The most recent example of that was when Bailey was asked on RSN radio on Tuesday morning whether, if he had his time again, whether he would do anything different. “Not at all,” came the quick reply. In the fair dinkum department, I’ve been working in Melbourne for Racenet for all of six months and there’s already a few things I’d do differently if I had my time over again. I defy anyone who has been working in their job for a decade or more, even if they have done an outstanding job, to not admit there’s a few things they would have done differently. But that’s Bailey for you. Strong, direct, straightforward and old school. When he says something, there is absolutely no wavering from it. His way or the highway. In many ways these are the sort of qualities you want as a chief steward. You want someone who can bang down doors without fear or favour, ask hard questions and look under every nook and cranny for wrongdoers. Bailey won’t leave Victorian racing with a stack of friends – and that’s even within the Racing Victoria body that employed him. I got a private message from one racing type which read “cannot tell you the number of texts that went around from RV staff rejoicing at the (Bailey resignation) news.” But that sort of stuff is as a badge of honour for Bailey as well. Any chief steward who has plenty of mates probably isn’t doing a very good job. One of the main criticisms I’ve heard of Bailey is there is a perception from racing participants that he treats them as guilty in the first instance and then it is up to them to prove their innocence. They say it should be the reverse. It's a tricky issue because racing's cops are often also the judges that had down sentences - where else do umpires suspend players? flockofewes2

flockofewes2 216 Report post Posted June 14, 2018 If Bailey was a dud, there's no way he would get a job in Singapore. They are trying to emulate Honkers. As you know in Honkers if you get caught .... with the rules...you go to..jail. gary1

They have been trying to emulate HKG for a couple of decades now without much success. Stakes money has not risen for ages and introducing a casino downtown was never going to be racing positive IMHO
Red Rum 1,833 Report post Posted June 15, 2018 Maybe it's a stepping stone to better things in HK. He got some guts though a lot of people who get their house shot up would probably consider a less high profile job but he didn't duck the challenge , I would have invested in some Kevlar curtains after that. Some poor horses running round Kranji to be fair but having been there a couple of time earlier this year I found it a good night out , great racing surface (even after a complete deluge before 1st one night) and it only takes a few washes to get the smell of second hand smoke out of clothing .
