Leggy 4,076 Report post Posted May 30, 2018 Yep breeders have a great product and don't need NZ racing to support it, though they've gone a fair way to make sure it does as far as possible for as long as possible. That has pretty much come to an end and from here they will have to rely on international markets and racing.
The Diceman Cometh 125 Report post Posted May 30, 2018 It was a hell of an auction. It was a mortgagee sale with the property having a GV of around $6 million. When the bloke woke up on auction day he would be hoping for the best to get out of a tight situation. Three genuine buyers, two who joined together to out last the third. His final few bids were probably resentment ones, to make the other two feel some extra pain in securing it. It was great theatre and well done to Tony and Des and the boys. And the vendor was that happy, he went and bought another farm the same day with the extra proceeds that surely had not been anticipated before the gavel fell. That has pretty much come to an end and from here they will have to rely on international markets and racing. The international market will only stand up for so long. The breeders need a domestic market to ensure those horses that are traded have a reasonable start. Can’t rely solely on yearling / RTR sales. So in the short to mid term it might survive..but long term, its a no go zone. How many horses sold internationally fall through the cracks? How many nice horses are sold to HKG and are never heard of again? How many beautiful yearling colts are sold to Asia only to end up in the rubbish bin.... How many are sold offshore who have at least scored some black type here to help the pedigree page. Also, as we’ve seen recently, the Aussies are only interested in pedigree page..and perhaps performance. They (or should I say, those dedicated followers of fashion) are stallion snobs...and I’m seeing something similar here... Also with South Africa coming on line for HKG, it’s only a matter of time before the NZ product is usurped if there is no domestic racing industry...Also the South African horses will be a lot cheaper to buy....I’ve spent good time in ZA and their intention is to supply the Gulf and HKG...so there is too much at stake for the domestic industry to fail.....so Stud masters WAKE UP!
