Winston Peters - Racing Minister "...reforms can be done correctly and with an enormous amount of speed"

Minister Peters sharing his thoughts on plotting the future course for racing in New Zealand in an interview with Brian de Lore published in the Informant's 8th February edition.

An insightful interview from the Minister...." I've gone back and asked the question - are the codes capable of looking after themselves as three separate units or can we soldier on (together)...and (I've) thought the only thing these codes are interested in is themselves and to be the masters of their own destiny."

Sad really that we've sat and observed 15 years of incompetence, cash waste and cost bloat following implementation of the Racing Act in 2003. Three Chairs of the Board in this time. Warren Larsen 2004  -2006, Michael Staissny 2007 -2012 and Glenda Hughes 2013 - current. The Racing Board, appointed pursuant to the Act, was intended to be free of any bias with an independent chair, three independent director appointees plus a director from each of the code bodies. In reality the terms of the Racing Act and the structure of the Board itself made their role perfunctionory. The four "independants" never exercised any stand alone independence.

Four CEO's over that same time period - Graeme Hansen, Andrew Brown, Chris Bayliss and John Allen - each charged with being a visionary leader come change agent.

We've witnessed internal structural changes, strategic moves and the associated cost with all of this over the past 15 years. Recommendations from chief executives cosying up to their Chair and/or vica versa involving individuals who've had/have little to no feel for NZ's racing industry and/or the global gaming industry landscape.

Am awaiting with interest to witness the "enormous amount of speed" that the Racing Minister will in fact take to effect the change that he's verbalised.
