.... 226 Report post Posted January 16, 2018 Jut looking at the feature races on Wellington Cup Day. Telegraph looks a very good field, looks like 6 individual G1 winners will be in the field, good depth and a full field Thorndon: Looks a pretty average G1 field on exposed form!, no G1 winners and only Stolen Dance and Saville Row are proven and consistent multiple G1 performers (both G1 runner ups 3 times), Savvy Dreams has an age group G1 placing and Prince Of Passion one G1 placing, does look a potential up and comers race though with a few very promising up and coming horse's like Love Affair/Hiflyer though. Since the SW+P has been introduced it has taken away the big fields that the Thorndon used to be and it was great. Not quite the same now Wellington Cup field has been very poor for a few years now and continues to be this year, only 5 runners are rated above 85 and the 2nd top rater being rated 91. Only 2 of the field are Group winners I think and only 3 of the 17 currently nominated are off the minimum weight. The top weight's (60kg) best performance is a Listed win in the Riverton Cup! Being a 2 mile Handicap race it is in a tricky place in the calendar now and it is hard to see the quality of field getting better in years to come. Especially with the way consistent geldings are treated in New Zealand Good solid support card but the days of a whole card of big good even betting fields at Trentham look gone, good luck to the club and hopefully the track plays as well as last week! bloke 1,232 Report post Posted January 18, 2018 Gee the Telegraph field is something special. In the good old days fields such as this were common at the Auckland and Wellington Cup meetings. Now when we see such a field it's WOW.

As you are talking about them I see 5 SI horses in it (incl last years winner of course). Pretty good representation and some pretty talented horses. Having said that I don't have any of them winning !
The Crucible 632 Report post Posted January 18, 2018 Agree its a very good Telegraph field. Interesting thing for me is that Opie Bosson has accepted the ride on Heroic Valour at 55kgs. When was the last time he rode at that weight? I guess he's working his way down to Avantage's MM weight. If he plans to ride 0.5kgs over the Telegraph weight, will they tell punters in advance? crustyngrizzly 1,700 Report post Posted January 18, 2018 Reliably informed that it will be 48 years on Saturday since Matamata jockey,Noel Riordan rode the Cup and Telegraph double on Il Tempo and Grizzly. From memory i think they were related, how close i'm not to sure but i seem to recall Red Loki and the dam of Show Gate were also in the family. Great old days for sure. chelseacol

Showgate traced back to the foundation mare Eulogy who produced about 14 foals. Ditto Fury's Order. A bit later Bonecrusher also had a strain of the family. Some great memories there Crusty. Il Tempo's win was the first Wellington Cup that I saw. He was last in a huge field at the 3 Furlongs and hit the lead just inside the furlong and won in a canter. I recall Red Loki it was stunning chestnut with a bright red mane. Show Gate was one of my all time favourites, her treble at the 1974 NZ Cup meeting was incredible. Hopefully he has notified stewards who can in turn notify punters ahead of putting their bets on. Speaking of Telegraph bets, the TAB are currently offering $8 on Kawi (I think until 5pm today?). I've taken some of that. Loves the track, nice trial, good draw and a race that tends to suit 1400m horses more than sprinters. No good thing but better than a 1 in 8 chance.
