kdt 291 Report post Posted January 1, 2018 A real shame for a once a year club. Don't have details to hand but this must be about the third time in more recent years that this has happened.
Sobeit 99 Report post Posted January 1, 2018 The grass looked quite long to me. Whether or not this contributed to the problem, I'm not sure.

MalcolmH 40 Report post Posted January 1, 2018 Seriously gallops in NZ are a huge joke and embarrassment. First day of a New Year and you guys still can't get it right. Must be a great look internationally!! Time to go to the other code and join us Gypsies - at least our meetings can go ahead regardless of the weather. We're Doomed 4,824 Report post Posted January 1, 2018 We were due to lose one. I bet CWJ is pleased he went to Auckland today. I do feel sorry for the trainers who skipped Kurow and Omakau to go to Waikouaiti.
TOM(the other Molloy) 1,774 Report post Posted January 1, 2018 It is patently obvious that irrigation or not if it has been dry and you get rain within 24 hours of raceday you have a huge problem. Doesn't matter if it is Ellerslie or Omakau it seems to apply. I am sure these guys are doing their very very best. Must be heartbreaking for Waikouaiti to have their big day destroyed but I have a bad feeling this will not be the last one. elbow
Shad 1,539 Report post Posted January 1, 2018 Buggar if you paid to get in.Just more of the same and with the dry spell maybe a few more, kumara used to have the best track, wether it was fine or wet for a month, was always like a big sponge, but alas that changed when they upgraded the surface, and now falls into the category of many tracks that have been supposedly improved for the better, but a smidgen of rain and there all doomed, don't know if this track falls in that category, but there is quite a few that have been upgraded that do.Oh to be a track manager. We're Doomed 4,824 Report post Posted January 1, 2018 You would think that those who paid to get in should be entitled to their money back. If you go to a cricket game and there is no result you get your money back

We're Doomed 4,824 Report post Posted January 1, 2018 Spare a thought for the Canty trainers and owners, with Omakau already closed those who don't want to go to the coast now have to wait four weeks for their next racing opportunity close to home. It must be very hard for trainers explaining to owners that if they want to race their horse they will have to travel for hours and race for $10,000. napier
Shad 1,539 Report post Posted January 1, 2018 Agree, everyone out of pocket, very expensive for owners, can't help but feel for them, but that sympathy won't pay the bills.

They only have two start points and generally smallish fields, and there are other options. Just imagine what Cromwell could do on that date. kdt, von Smallhaussen and napier

Interestingly, there was $87,000 not paid out today just in stakes, and jockeys and trainers missed out on about $20,000 in percentages, so perhaps some effort should be made to boost some stakes or provide some extra races elsewhere. Shad 1,539 Report post Posted January 1, 2018 Even higher stakes have not attracted bigger fields, just not the horses numbers, and owners and trainers are giving the game away, was some good stakes up north last week or two, could only get 6 to 7 starters. Make em queue half an hour for a beer then only let them see 20m down the straight. All in 30 degree heat. Bloody great! elbow

Plenty of those Canterbury trainers think the Coast is beneath their nags so it is their own fault if they have to explain limited opportunities to their owners. Pitty is excused but some of those others... elbow

We have to travel hours up here in CD and race for peanuts, it's the nature of the beast, I'll tell you what though, if the coast had bookies, it would be the largest punting week in NZ outside of Chch cup week.......it always has atmosphere, a bookmakers ring of say 20, wow, inject a few million into the local economies......but it wont happen, bookies are a scourge according to most, or so the vox populi announces.......shame. barryb 2,062 Report post Posted January 1, 2018 I am at Tauherenikau today and as usual a massive crowd and near 30c temp. Interesting they have a mobile cell tower here, giving great reception. Stand by, heavy shower about 20 mins away. Short odds on the day not being completed. Shad
