tasman man 11 979 Report post Posted December 30, 2017 Exactly Tim.........those stakes are a disgrace ! Had a laugh last night listening to Trots and twice the commentator said it was the FEATURE race of night ! Stake was $8500 total , had you not had 2 in it may not have had a race at all...a claytons feature ! These stakes with a horse costing somewhere between $20k - $35k annually no matter how fast or slow it is and with many not winning a race the economics don't make sense ! I see in Aussie Harness regularly run around for $3500 total stake ! Who is making the money ??

Chris Wood 1,577 Report post Posted December 30, 2017 Ellerslie and TeRapa are my two favourite tracks, but for holiday racing, Taupo killed them all. Nice family environment, picnic at the car, drink your own beer and wine, super day out. You can entertain your owners, enjoy the racing, and in the public area was there any problems, no chance. Chris Wood 1,577 Report post Posted December 30, 2017 Oooops... getting back to the Stakes, yes $10k was poor for the best club in NZ, grateful for the win, but at headquarters at this time of the year?

Seriously Chris? You could take in your own beer and wine? There seems to be a massive inconsistency with how this is regulated around the country. Seems to be just the luck of the draw and whether the local council supports racing or not.
Chris Wood 1,577 Report post Posted December 31, 2017 Yes Doom, and Matamata was the same last week for their Christmas meeting, as was Tauranga last week. TeRapa states the Police and liquor licensing are to blame, surely their is away around it if they could work in together. Plus the young ones who need introduction to our great game can’t afford to be paying $8.00 a can/ bottle. When you know what they are buying it in at, it is an overkill, but I do realise everyone needs to get a dollar along the way. It is the council was talking to someone at Taupo and unlike Tauranga they can take as much alcohol in as they want. At Tauranga bags are checked and you are only allowed 6 bottles beer or 1 bottle wine per person
