rdytdy 5,335 Report post Posted November 16, 2017 This new system is turning out a joke. In the past if you got a suspension then it applied to the days on which a jockey was normally riding and four or five days meant four or five race days. Now they apply it to a "national day" covering meetings all around the country (carte blanche). At Riccarton on Wednesday note the following suspensions: K Gundowry AQUAZURRA Careless riding after start [Rule 638(1)(d)] - Suspended 19-30/11 incl, 7 days R Cuneen SIGNIFY Careless riding 500 metres [Rule 638(1)(d)] - Suspended 19/11-1/12 incl, 8 days Now both do not ride in the North Island and during the period 19/11 - 1/12 and there is only one South Island meeting being Ascot park on the 23/11. Both have in effect been only suspended for one day for a careless riding charge. On the same day Alysha Collett gets 10 days which will be 10 meetings as she rides both islands on a regular basis. The new system means riders that rarely travel out of their area will be slapped with wet bus ticket suspensions as highlighted by the Gundowry and Cuneen suspensions whereas other riders who are doing the hard yards cop it hard by comparison. Something is not right here. The penalties now are not even.
uneasy 497 Report post Posted November 16, 2017 The new system, don't you think that it is more fair as it is aligned to their earning capacity sure ABC rides at a lot more meetings Last season ABC 832 rides Sam Wynne 484 We're Doomed

Leggy 4,007 Report post Posted November 16, 2017 Yep. Much better. Still not quite equitable, e.g., an 8 day suspension ends up the same as a 7 day one here.

For the same offence penalize ABC more because she is working hard, travelling, which has costs associated with that and one reaps the reward for their ability and work effort. It's the same as saying 'a wealthy man and a poor man commit a murder together." Because the poor man doesn't earn as much and is more unlikely to than the wealthy man then give the poor man ten years in jail and the wealthy man thirty years. So not only does ABC get 9 days more in real terms her earning capacity is also compromised big time to a degree of ten times the penalty compared to the other two. FYI Sam Wynne actually copped a suspension that day also: S Wynne BOOTS ‘N’ ALL Excessive use of whip [Rule 638(3)(b)(ii)] Suspended 19-30/11 incl, 7 days. So in effect 1 riding day also although she has ridden a the odd day in the North Island. Going on your reasoning above then the difference should be double not 10 times. Lets then take a look at Opie. He rarely rides in the SI nor in mid week the CD unless there is a major meeting. So a six day penalty for careless riding could be as much as two days. Your theory doesn't work. However my main point is that many of the penalties under the new system will show up as very light indeed and accordingly hardly any deterrent. Opie gets 8 days for careless riding starting 3 December. 8 days is Cromwell, Pukekohe, New Plymouth, Matamata, Ellerslie, Waipukurau, Ellerslie and Hastings. Four of those meetings he would not be riding a,. Cromwell, New Plymouth midweek, Waipukurau Sunday and Hastings midweek.
