VRC Oaks - Sir T influence

Recommended Posts

Just an observation... The influence of Sir Tristram blood on yesterday's VRC Oaks was significant. Not only does his son Zabeel sit on both sides of the winner's (Pinot) pedigree but no fewer that half the field had an element of Sir Tristram / Sir Ivor influence on their dam side, either through sire sons (Zabeel, Grosvenor or Sovereign Red) or a S/T mare. In fact his bloodlines can be found in the Oaks trifecta (which paid a tidy $1000).

Pinot's pedigree is very tidy. Given Pierro has a Sadlers Wells influence on his dam side, perhaps no surprise he sired such a promising staying mare.

Thoughts??

when I saw the race my immediate first thought was that Zabeel was inbred close up. Of course looking at the pedigree this isn't the case. It's also interesting that there are no other stallion double ups in the first four generations.

Well, one reason  Pierro might be getting foals who want to run over ground is that quite a few are linebred to either Zabeel or Sir Tristram:

Pinot -- dam by Zabeel
Cabierro -- 2nd dam by Zabeel
Pierata -- 2nd dam by Zabeel (plus Sir Ivor via Grand Luxe)
Pissaro -- dam by Galileo, 2nd dam by Grosvenor
Pierrocity -- 2nd dam by Sovereign Red (by Sir T)
Satin Slipper -- 3rd dam by Kaapstad (plus Sir Ivor via Grand Luxe)
Noviero -- 3rd dam by Sir Tristram
China Gale -- 3rd dam by Grosvenor (plus Sir Ivor via Grand Luxe)
Pierone -- dam by Filante (NZ) whose dam is by Sir Tristram
Princess Pierro (placed as a 2yo) -- 3rd dam by Bates Motel, by Sir Ivor

That's 9 out of his 20 winners so far, and 3 of his 5 stakes horses.  If you count Tulip's 3rd dam Grand Luxe by Sir Ivor and Princess Pierro, that's fully half of his winners and 80% of his stakes horses so far are linebred to Sir Ivor, Sir Tristram, or Zabeel AND 60% of his stakes horses have Sir Ivor through the Ciboulette family.  It's quite astounding to see how strong that cross is even at this early stage.

6 of Pierro’s 7 stakes performers 1st dam’s are by Danehill line stallions (Flying Spur, Redoute’s Choice, Exceed & Excel, Rock Of Gibraltar

The other stakes performer’s (Pinot G1 Oaks winner) 2nd dam is by Danehill

So an obvious click there already with Danehill featuring up close in damline of all of his stakes horses, so great outcross appeal.
