Peters has to be Racing Minister, as NZF has only 4 ministers in the coalition agreement, and Clayton Mitchell is 6 on the list.

That should be a relief for racing folk, as Mitchell has no background in Racing, even though as associate Racing spokesperson, he will get off loaded with the work

Seriously Hesi can you see a Labour Government that has swung hard to the left and decries Capitalism will do anything for Racing?  Especially when the spout the propaganda that there are "hundred's of thousands of children in poverty"?

You really have become a cynic Admin.

Racing is a legitimate industry that employs many people(I can't recall the figs on how many), any Govt has an obligation to put in place policies that will allow it to grow and thrive.

Plus, I don't understand where you are coming from, the Nats did nothing for racing in 9 years, so how about at least cutting the new guys some slack

You've surprised me twice in the last month Hesi.  Firstly I never took you for a Chardonnay Socialist and now extremely politically naive.

Racing is heavily subsidised as it is and is very unlikely to receive further handouts or props from a Labour Government (that is in the process of lurching hard left) regardless of the dubious figures describing how many work in the industry.  Why do they have an obligation "to put in place policies that will allow it to grow and thrive"?

Racing is seen as a rich white man's sport that survives on the gambling proletariat and increasingly on the vulnerable working class through the pokie revenue prop up.  There are a select group of the haute bourgeoisie that represent the antithesis of Labours traditional support base.  Winnie wont fight for Racing - it isn't one of his bottom lines.  Those of you who voted for Winnie have already been sold down the road.

There is no longer any political leverage in terms of a significant support block in Racing - not like in the old days where there was less of a divide between urban and rural values.

No matter how much Winnie funding and lobbying is done by our racing elite (although apparently most of his funding came from the fishing industry) it wont slow the erosion of the revenue base by Sports.

Well that's interesting ...fishing stumped up major campaign funds for NZF, and now the Kermadecs are off the sanctuary agenda...so folks, if I'm reading between the lines, racing was just a smoke screen.....ummmmmm.  As I said, grass roots participants have been hung out to dry...and with greens pressing for the pokie funds, I don't see how It's all going to work.

No you are wrong, the agreement says it will support NZF's racing policy, and Clayton Mitchell(Associate spokesman for Racing) released a statement in Sept saying

“The horse racing industry is extremely keen to get a state of the art all-weather racetrack established but they need the government to play a role in making this possible.

“Unlike the National government which has been apathetic towards such a proposal, New Zealand First supports them fully."

That's not part of the written policy they've agreed to I don't think.

Wingatui abandoned today after a horse slips in Race 1. Urgent job for Winston will be to direct more money into track maintenance. Expect more abandonments over the summer months.

Talking to a trainer down there last night predicted that. No surprise. Track is FuXXed

Policies are already there. Racing is just incapable of using them for that purpose.

This stopping foreign buyers is going to be interesting because isn't there a clause in the free trade agreement with China specifically stating the right of Chinese to buy property in NZ?  If they are going to change that then the whole deal might(probably will) topple and that will make Winnie and co popular with our exporters.  Plus the likelihood of China taking legal action against NZ.  I personally do not like the idea of overseas buyers but Helen negotiated it and from where I sit I doubt they will be able to amend it

No, there isn't.
