Future Of Punting

Recommended Posts

I put this up on kiwidogz but thought this deserved it's own thread.

As an avid punter who is 40yrs old and when I mean avid, I follow the greyhounds not the other codes.
I allow myself currently $20 a week for my share of fun, don't smoke, don't go out as we have a young family ( next planned outing is Nov for a wedding ) and I work in a bottlestore so I have that angle covered.
The bonus top up of $10 the last three Thursday has helped my entertainment as well.
However I'm about the only one of my age group that I know that enjoys a punt on a weekly basis with Thursday's my current favourite punting day. I'm sure when my two pups start racing then Tuesday will be on the cards as well.
The N.Z.R.B. I would say has lost at least two generations of new punters but probably more than likely three. Ohhhh I hear the cry's from them, casino's/lotto/pokies, bollocks they got lazy and didn't invest in the next generation coming through with the times.
With my job I see a lot of the 18-25 age group week in week out and work with a year three university student over the holidays. Apart from the Melbourne Cup rarely is punting talked about throughout the rest of the year. The uni student hears of my punting loses, wins and my ownership but after questioning him he and a few of his mates in Dunedin have been to Fourbry once of twice since he has lived there.
He does have a punt like his mates but it is on sport.
Explaining trifectas, quaddies and pick6/place6 is like white noise, no interest - probably my hard luck stories lol
I know the T.A.B. rely on the so called 'whales' for their turnover and the little punter has been pushed aside with free to air, phone betting ( minimum $10 I believe now ).
Yes they have somewhat kept up with the internet generation, but you only have to look at the ozz sites to see where not 100% up with the play.
My thoughts, are there new 'whales' coming though?
What happening to the 'whales', are their numbers decreasing as the years go by?
Yes we have export of our product to ozz and the rest of the world but you have to keep your own backyard clean, tidy or no one what's to look at it.

Very apt summation lad27. The NZRB and TAB have a monopoly on wagering in NZ and could easily be accused of treating punters with contempt as a result.

it was no different in Australia until corprorate bookmakers were legalised. Competition is healthy and makes one strive a little harder to get your dollar. Also worth noting is that Tabcorp is privatised and therefore answerable to their shareholders who require profits so better care and service is likely.
