How's the "KiwiBuild" going Hesi?  Have they started the first one of the 100,000 yet?

Most of these are supposed to be in Auckland. Do you really believe that they will be priced between $300K - $500k.

Twyford has stated that a household would need to have a buy-in of $60K +  to buy a KiwiBuild property yet the Ministry Of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) say that a first home buyer household would need to earning $114,000 a year to buy a KiwiBuild build house at $500k.

It's undoubtedly a big ask, but at least they have it as a priority to address.  I can recall 12 months prior to the election, senior Nats like English and Joyce, scoffing at the suggestion there was a housing crisis

I see Bridges acknowledging the Nats shortcomings in not addressing the issue

Simon Bridges: National could have done more on housing

28 Feb, 2018 11:06am

National leader Simon Bridges says his party could have done more on the environment and housing when in government.

Speaking to RNZ, Bridges said he agreed there was a housing crisis – but only for those without homes. "For those it effects, it is a crisis."

National ministers have long steered clear of accepting the word "crisis" during the party's time in government, but Bridges said housing was one of the areas the party should have moved more quickly on. The environment was another in which it could have done better.

He said while National had been working on those areas, "there was a sense of frustration it wasn't going fast enough".

"Did we show ourselves in those areas to be doing enough? Possibly not."

However, he said the election result of about 44 per cent showed it had stood on a strong programme which voters had confidence in.

Bridges also brushed off questions about potential coalition partners for National and its relationship with NZ First and its leader Winston Peters.

Bridges told Newshub those were questions for Peters rather than him – and suggested Peters could pay a price for his attacks on National and decision to side with Labour.

"Frankly, they left us and it is a question for them, not us, about where they stand with that. I think it would be a very limiting factor for them if at the next election all they're saying is they can only go with the Labour Party."

Bridges defeated Peters to win the Tauranga seat in 2008 and described Peters as "a wily customer".

So how is this priority working out then Hesi.

The pre-election promise was 100,000 KiwiBuild homes in ten years. That's 10,000 a year, 833 a month, 208 a week or 30 per day.

So tell me if it is such a priority, how many have been built to date?

And speaking of housing Hesi, Ardern calls on landlords to use morals when adjusting the price on rentals particularly in Wellington due to the shortage. A shortage brought about by her policies. ie New regulations and requirements on landlords and new laws on tenancy agreements swung strongly in favour of tenants which has led to a reduction in rental properties as landlords exit the market.

Add in the fact that students incomes have been increased with using taxpayer's money to the tune of $50.00 per week and free fees for the first year then student numbers have increased adding more demand for rental accommodation.

It is basic economics 1.01 Supply and Demand. So why should she call landlords out on a morality issue to fix a problem she has caused.

I'm sure that she will use her morality when it comes to increasing  or adding new taxes. Yeah nah!

Ted my youngest daughter went to Uni in Christchurch and she flatted with two dairy farmers daughters. Their parents ran  incomes through family trusts so that they earned under the threshold allowing the daughters to claim at the time $180 per week.  No doubt this is not the only one benefit they claimed from the governement by fudging their incomes. No doubt also like you Ted they were Tories. Tories are like most they like something for nothing.

I gather it was legal though Bloke so no offence was committed unlike Metiria Turei and you make an assumption they were Tories.

Not sure what this has to do with 1.01 Supply and Demand with regard to rentals though.

I would think the vast majority of people like something for nothing Bloke, it's basic human nature, no matter what political persuasion.

Yes legal but its the Tories who go on about those on The DPB as parasites  Turei broke the law and admitted so. Emglish just said sorry and gave the money back when there was a good case to charge him with Fraud.

Poor old Jacinda. In power for 4 months and according to RDYTDY, she's caused the Wellington housing crisis.

I've seen no articles supporting this claim and I think RDYTDY has merely made it up, because it suits his anti Labour Govt argument.

The Prime Minister’s comments this morning on Breakfast that Wellington landlords should ignore market signals and poorly designed public policy, and instead just look to ‘morality’ for economic guidance were disappointing says the New Zealand Taxpayers’ Union.

Taxpayers’ Union Economist Joe Ascroft says "The reason Wellington rents are increasing more than other parts of the country isn’t because Wellington landlords are especially immoral. Rents are increasing because the new Government used taxpayer money to increase the incomes of students while doing nothing to reduce supply constraints on housing."

"The Prime Minister is correct to say that landlords are selfish. One of the foundational pillars of economic theory is that people act in their own best interest. Good public policy assumes that to be true, rather than hoping for a miracle in human behavior."

"If the best the Prime Minister has to offer in solutions for Wellington housing supply is a plea for morality, renters shouldn’t expect any change to the environment of accelerating rent increases."

Student allowance boost blamed for rent spikes

HENRY COOKE

JANUARY 11 2018

Renters are blaming a new $50 boost for students for a spike in Wellington rents, but landlords say the market is simply tight.

The price hike is particularly acute in the capital, where 30,000 students compete with highly-paid young professionals and families increasingly priced out of the property ladder.

The average rent for new leases of an entire property in Wellington increased $42 between November and December 2017 to $482.

The new Labour government increased all student allowances and the living costs portion of loans by $50 a week from January 1, 2018.

Several students say that in anticipation of the boost, their rent has been hiked by landlords specifically citing the extra cash.

Wellington student Teri O'Neill, 19, lives in a four bedroom flat near the central city and was paying a combined $185 for her room and expenses.

"Two weeks after Winston [Peters] decided the Government, the landlord said from the first of January, because some of you are on living costs and allowances, we are looking to increase the rent to $230."

This per-room figure includes roughly $15 for expenses. The rent rise applied to all rooms despite the fact that O'Nell lives with two young professionals.

Trade Me's head of rentals Aaron Clancy said many landlords would see the boost as an opportunity.

"There's no doubt that private landlords will see this as an opportunity to increase their rents," Clancy said.

"But this is across the board - we are all time highs for rent and demand in Wellington. It's perfect timing for a landlord to lift rents knowing that this is going on."

He said Wellington was "ripe" for higher rents as there were plenty of high paying jobs in the city and not much new residential development.

"If you look around there aren't cranes everywhere."

In fact there were 462 less active bonds in December 2017 than November 2017.

"Labour's first year free will increase student registration. Even if it is just a small amount we still need to find a home for these students," Clancy said.

The Government estimates the tertiary fees-free policy will draw in an extra 2000 students nationwide this year.

Magic Mirror

It had been months since Taxarella had her last audience with the Magic Mirror, so it was quite the delightful surprise when she found the entrance to the Magical bathroom once again. Hoping to find a message on the mirror’s surface to recite so she could receive some more wisdom, Taxarella couldn’t hold back and let out a youth-adjacent giggle discovering this new message…

“Mirror Mirror decorated with stuff,

Please advise me now I’m up the duff!”

And with that, the large, ornate Magic Mirror shimmered briefly before seeming to come to life offering wisdom, “Why hello again Taxarella… or should I call you Prime Minister?”

“It’s Jacinda actually… I’m just a farm girl from Morrinsville…”

“Zip it sweetie… don’t mention that too much… you’re not doing that town’s reputation any favours. The Labour party policies have bashed farmers and rural communities enough already… and I won’t even start with the hurt you lot are deliberately inflicting on students and parents who want to maintain a democratic choice with their children’s education.

You have big problems coming with the huge, huge issues Hipkins and Kelvin are going to have when it comes to proving “good faith bargaining” with their ham-fisted aborting of successful Charter schools… all because your political beliefs are intolerant of parents other political beliefs for options – even when those Charter schools demonstrate huge success.

Parents will punish you and your lot next election for this and this alone if you keep eroding their democracy without any kind of public mandate. This issue is a political hand grenade… and you guys pulled the pin whilst fumbling the pass. Even the NZ mainstream media won’t be able to shelter you on this matter soon. Not once the general public wake up…

Now, I really need to offer you some wisdom around your lifestyle choice options also. You’ll probably conveniently forget the media-generated tempest in a teacup when Prime Minister Key took a few hours of leisure time to play golf with America’s first Muslim fan… Here was a prime minister who worked damn near 24/7 for nine years, giving his salary to charity even… and the vitriol was toxic from you lot. Now contrast… here’s you, been in the job five minutes, not only wanting to do the job part-time when convenient, you also expect to be able to bulge your trousers with the entire pay increase also – whilst swanning off on lifestyle choice leave.

Strewth! Doing the role of the office of prime minister for all of New Zealand is NOT a part-time job when convenient. Nor is parenthood for that matter. Or, are you telling all other mums out there that, if you, Taxarella can be a mum… and do the most demanding job in NZ, doing it part time, then all other mums should be able to much lesser jobs… so, now, there’s even no need for maternity leave?

Even worse, now you’re also completely undermining all other world leaders, prime ministers and presidents. What you’re saying to the world is that not only is the role of the office of prime minister and leader of an entire country able to be done part-time when convenient… it can be done by someone with baby brain!

Taxarella, have you even managed to do any joined-up thinking on these matters? You might think you’re only needing to please Winston first for making you prime minister, but the voters really don’t like your virtue signalling and the fluffy-apple-pie-mumsy stuff in the glossy magazines to distract and obfuscate from all the back peddling. People don’t want to be lucky enough to win Lotto these days… people are now saying, “One day I hope to win the contract to be the chiropractor for the Labour party!” People are now saying you lot have more flip-flops than the warehouse of an Aussie jandal maker.

Couple all of that with the entire omni-cluster shambles from day one of parliament… then the issue of the “missing million” becoming the “missing billion – trees” and now the back-stepping flip-flopping of the 100,000 “affordable homes”. Strewth Taxarella, how ironic that the NZ Labour party’s greatest successful input into a parliament has been to Australia’s.

It was such an omni-cluster-shambles first 100 days… but please tell me, what do hokey-pokey ice cream and pickled gerkins together taste like anyway?”

And with that, Taxarella knew she’d been dismissed as the Magic Mirror shimmered briefly once more before going silent and dark. Taxarella could sense a foreboding ill wind blowing in her direction… with no billion trees or 100,000 non-houses to seek shelter from, she would have to one day face the real public – not just patsy photo opportunities at kindergartens – and one day, explain how the office of prime minister can be done part-time when convenient… and by someone with baby brain! This would take some spin because, deep in her socialist heart of redistribution, she knew the voters didn’t vote for someone to take a pay rise for the tough job of leading their country and her people’s aspirations… only to do it part-time when convenient.

And why is that fishing dope traipsing all over the world in her shadow looking bored out of his socialite mind? Bronagh never went everywhere, Peter never went ANYWHERE with Helen (mind you she always had H2 close at hand in the closet), Burton only showed up occasionally and Bill's wife had a medical career and large brood to look after. Maybe Captain Ahab is planning a fish encounter with all this island-hopping but one thing he needs to brush up on is his manners--not a good look standing on arrival at the foot of aeroplane steps with your hands in your pockets as he did in Oz and Samoa. Might work in Gisborne but not when he is the PM's lap-dog!   IMO!

Just what did she achieve there. Trotted out wanting to take the Manus Island country jumpers again and was told no again. Tried to tell Australia what do re Australian policies and was put in her place. Talk about dumb.

When the loser is described as the winner

by SB on March 6, 2018 at 1:30pm

.Imagine a two-person race where one runner is more powerful than the other. In the first race as they run around the track the weaker runner (trailing well behind) calls out, “Please, can we have your Manus Island refugees?” “No,” is the swift reply. “I don’t take no for an answer,” wheezes the second runner, “I have got my big-girl pants on now, and I really must insist that you give us your Manus Island refugees.” “No,” replies the other runner, who by now has already finished the race and is sitting on the side line sipping a nice cool drink.

Sweating and exhausted the second runner crosses the finish line and smiles winningly. “This isn’t over,” she says between gasps for air. “I always get what I want and it is the moral thing to do.”

A couple of months later the two stand at the start of the second race. This time the weaker runner is wearing some really snazzy running gear and the photographers are really impressed and are taking lots of photos. She waves to her fans and makes a moving speech, talking about conversations and morals and poverddy and budget sustainability. It is a well structured speech with considerable time spent on emphasising how well the two runners’ countries get on.

Then the race begins. Just like before the stronger runner finishes well in front and, just like before, the weaker runner continues to try to persuade the other runner to give her the Manus Island refugees.

Just like before the first runner says no.

At the end of the race the photographers and journalists circle. They declare the weaker runner to have won the day due to her superior speech and her lovely presentation. Sitting in her media shade the stronger runner simply smiles and takes a long cool sip of his iced drink.

Mark Richardson is correct when he talks about "Sanctimonious media sheep."

It's not the truth, it is just someone's opinion.

The reality is, Labour is in power, Jacinda Ardern is PM, and you right whingers just keep regurgitating any media article or person that suits your argument, it's not going to change anything

If your wonderful Nats had truly brought so many people prosperity through such a buoyant economy, then they would have easily got 50% plus of the vote, not 44.40%, and not had to rely on the vagaries of MMP and a very unpredictable Winston Peters.

How things change, 7 months ago the Nats were cruising, Labour was a train wreck.  Now it is the Nats that are the train wreck, the next poll results must be being dreaded by the Nats.

I like Bridges, but he has a long way to go to prove himself, and he won't have to do it in the pressure cooker environment, that Ardern found herself in, in the 6 weeks leading up to the election.

A bit of credit for what she has achieved.  I'm actually a long time Nats supporter(not this election), and I am happy to give credit where credit is due.

I am not talking about the politics of personality Hesi, just wanting to know what she has achieved in her job as PM. Using your analogy I am not interested in how Sam Spratt performs in Fashion in the Field, only how she rides my horse.

Need help Hesi. Here are some of the things she has done:

Taken a summer holiday in Aussie

Attended Rhythm & Vines

Got pregnant

Pose For Vogue and Australian Women's Weekly

Attend neo maternity appointments

Shop for maternity clothes

House hunt and purchase a 1.8 million house (she now has two properties totaling 3 million after saying 6 years ago she couldn't afford a house in unaffordable Auckland)

All followed and documented by the media.

So that is her achievements as a pregnant unmarried woman with a penchant for property acquisition and photo shoots however I believe Chevy is asking you to list the achievements of Ardern's role as Prime Minister.

Well that is what I was talking about, transforming Labour into a position of being in the race, in 6 weeks
