A plan for the future

Recommended Posts

Given that the NZTR board is ( by their own admission ) packed with leading businessmen ( plus Victoria ), ditto the NZRB, what can we expect from them in terms of a seminal business plan for the new season ?

They won't just do more of the same will they ? the "same old same old" that hasn't  worked for the last twenty years, that wouldn't be their cunning plan would it ?

Old Chinese proverb Midget..." If you always do what you've always done, you will always get what you have always got.."

They think they are doing well, JA knows the industry inside out after those hugely successful roadshows, the pokie king is on board, so why not...?

Given the stink over the current ratings system, maybe they could take a lead from Hong Kong JC, the worlds premier race club (IMHO) and the one with the best, most informative website of any race club - no doubt. I like their "Re-ratings" practice at the start of a new season. You can read it on their website but here's an extract. < "The end of season rating review is used as an opportunity to re-examine the ratings of all horses in training in advance of the next racing season.  Through this review, the Handicappers can provide relief in future handicaps to horses whose records indicate that would be appropriate, where normal handicapping practices may not have permitted special consideration to be applied during the season.">. How good is that ?  Also, have a look at their Mission Statement. I think that their most informative website gives you the confidence to believe in their MS. I've found it so easy to have a bet when in HK. If you go into a HK betting shop, they have advisors patrolling the shop ready to answer any queries on how to have a bet. At the races, it's not expensive to have a really good meal, in comfort. On International Day in Dec, it's not expensive but the catering is superb. Getting to Shatin is no problem (taxis are cheap!) and Happy Valley is even easier - a short walk from the rail station. Only 2 tracks. How many tracks in NZ? About 50 something? How many racing clubs? About 65 or so? What do people complain about NZ Racing? Poor tracks, poor facilities (infrastructure), poor catering, poor stakes, high cost of participation in relation to possible returns, poor governance, etc etc. Not a good recipe for a bright future is it? Its amazing the number of people involved in the Industry in NZ, who without exception, will tell you that Racing in NZ is stuffed. Let's hope something changes.

Interesting Trumpy. Hardly an apples to apples comparison though is it ? To take that to a logical conclusion you are saying put a couple of tracks in the Auckland Region and stuff everybody else...??

Agree we have far too many tracks, many sub standard including facilities, but it won't happen here.

Midget it is difficult to be optimistic about racing when new Racing Minister David Bennett begins his tenure by appointing someone like Bill Birnie to the NZRB. Bill is just another power point presentation phoney slash whiteboard warrior totally disconnected from racing's hard working participants.

Spot on that was an appalling first appointment by Bennett, definitely sucked any positive vibes about new blood following on from Glenda's lap-dog Nathan Guy.

No Ohakason, I wasn't implying any solutions. That's part of a broader picture that will require quite a bit of consultation, pain and a clear achievable pathway. You and I both know that your comment re a couple of tracks in Auck is a nonsense :) but something has to be done in that area - as part of the broader plan. Cheers!
