Why have paid line umpires?

Recommended Posts

During the Hurr/Lions match, a Lion clearly stepped on the sideline in full view of the line umpire, yet once again, we saw the ref go to the TMO to get a decision! This happens time and time again so why have them?

They are now Assistant referees so their responsibilities much wider than just marking when and where the ball/player went out .So with all the crap happening off the ball ,more and more these days ,its probable his vision went elsewhere momentarily and he wasn't actually looking at the players feet.So if uncertain they will definitely check with TMO cos their career is basically on the line [excuse the pun].

later on the Hurricanes prop scruffed the Lions halfback off the ball and the Assistant made the call to award a penalty as it was behind the ref.

No defence for the Line Umpire, Assistant Referee or whatever you wish to call him from me.     He runs along the sideline with a flag not all over the field so surely his MAIN role is in or not in touch.     And usually he is the closest on the field to where a player (or players) cross the line.      So why does he often not rule on such and want the TMO to revue it.     Perhaps it is because he doesn't want to be shown to the world as making a mistake.    To me, by not making the initial decision he is being shown up as being incompetent to be a Touchee (or AR).      The second show of incompetence these "clowns" display is not talking to the ref over their intercoms when defenders stand or advance past the off side line at rucks, mauls, scrums, lineouts  or attackers following through kicks when the match referee usually has his attention close in.

Interesting tonight ....when ball was held up from a kick...neither the ref nor our 'flawless kiwi commentators' knew the law.

But it is getting farcical how so many players now are pleading to the assistant refs for apparent infringements .

Before the debate starts SBW was very dangerous and deserved to go....the latter cleanout by the Lions prop is quite typical of what is the norm now...cleaning out players on side of ruck or players who aren't intending to be part of ruck. Its exactly what Jonathon Kaplan pointed out this week.. Its illegal but a big part of game.
