Blue 1,099 Report post Posted June 22, 2017 Never taken much notice before apart from the English jumps season which you can't help but love. Just had a look at the first race tonight. Mad 2 yo dash over 1000m. Shite, a field of 18, 5 with two wins back to back, one other 2 race winner and ten other one-race winners. Probably some who really don't have much chance but never seen form like it. How good are these English 2 year olds?
Insider 3,961 Report post Posted June 22, 2017 The English scene is very different from ours. Firstly they don't have public trials like we do. Secondly they aren't trying to sell 80% of their two years olds in training to another market without exposing them to a race Consider this, no trials so you take your two year old to the races somewhere and you win, so off you go to Ascot. Let me tell you that three quarters of that field cannot win as they are not good enough even though they have won a race or make be two. P. S. This is not a knock on Royal Ascot, it is simply an explanation of the difference between them and our hopeless situation. Isn't Ascot fantastic? Insider 3,961 Report post Posted June 22, 2017 The Gold Cup....that was a proper race for sure. Pure excitement the whole way, especially if you backed the winner.

I always rate The Coventry Stakes on the first day a stronger race, but if you are looking for a horse to mature as a 3yr old The Chesham on the 4th or 5th day is a good guide. Rubbish Insider Believe it....they are trying to sell their two year olds because the stakes in the UK are as dismal as here...in fact nearly worse. The difference is that they can frank the form with the historic documentation of Timeform, Racing Post etc which allows the rest of the World to understand the ability of any horse because to a great degree it is bench marked...that's franking the form. The rest of the World knows that UK form at its best is equal to the best in the World so every horse in the UK has a home on the international market. For example our NZ horses in Hong Kong do well, but the UK horses do better. Their 2 yo's are very smart. It just so happens that Royal Ascot means something and therefore everyone wants to be there. They do their trialling at home on the gallops over there so they don't need trials. In the Windsor Castle, on the first day, you had 22 runners (yep....22 2yo running against each other). There were 13 previous winners, some by large margins. So any winner coming out of that race will get a rating of 103-105. Put that into perspective, Darci Brahma was rated 108 when he won the Grp 1 in Australia as a 2yo after winning his first 2 as a two year old and running second in the Elerslie Sires Produce (Gp1). In the Coventry (gp2) 17 starters, 12 winners, winner rated 109 In the Queen Mary Gp2 2yo race on the second day, 23 runners, 16 previous winners, winner rated 104 On the 3rd day, Norfolk Stakes (gp2), 17 runners, 11 previous winners, winner rated 108 So this is like saying there are 4 2yo's equivalent to Darci Brahma and probably 16 others rated just below that. And to top that off, these are not their best 2yo races. We may not have seen their best race yet!! So here's a question....what race was the biggest betting race so far? We're Doomed 4,868 Report post Posted June 23, 2017 Berri is correct, the stakes are appalling. You can see why any decent stayer is quickly sent to Australia.
Berri 2,131 Report post Posted June 23, 2017 Racetracks have to be able to cater for more than 24 runners. That is when we will hit the jackpot.
We're Doomed 4,868 Report post Posted June 23, 2017 I drove past York the other day. Massive racecourse and big crowds for the big days. The interesting thing is how many of their major tracks are close to the centre of town and they haven't had to sell off half their land to survive. elbow
Midget 4,489 Report post Posted June 23, 2017 They're not that different to us, they have very good carnivals but as many days of bad racing with poor crowds. Ascot is an amazing extravaganza of course, equivalent to Melbourne in the spring with just as many blind drunk girls laying in the gardens tits up and nickers down. As for their 2yo's being better than the equivalent Australasian 2yo's, Berri you need Nivea Blue ( with added avocado oil ) and a box of tissues to clean up afterwards. The Coventry is a very good race, the rest of them are just shite. elbow
Berri 2,131 Report post Posted June 24, 2017 My small friend...I used Darci Brahma as the yardstick...need I say more... As a word of caution, you run into a Caravaggio or a Churchill...then the Aussie 2 yo's need to be at their very very best or they start gasping like an Aussie trying to steer an America's Cup boat elbow
