Cambridge and forbury park

Recommended Posts

Continually we see these two clubs offering the lowest stakes is it time hrnz stepped in more and helped them with stakes or help put plans in place to up the stakes  soon or close them down . So often we see them put stakes at the minimum allowed amount for many races $6000  I think the lowest are possible allowed, it's probly just ok for a winners but when you  say run 4th you get 275 at Cambridge and 240 forbury. Is it time hrnz closed down clubs that are struggling ? Surely horses traveling from Canterbury to help boast forbury fields they almost have at least run 2nd to even break even ?

Yet Forbury still seem to get decent size fields. Was looking at some of the Aussie Harness last week and some of their races were only 2grand stakes. In fact Supersonic Miss and Rockinroll Magic, who have both won group 1 races and shitload of money were racing in 7 grand race. There seems to be a place for these kind of stakes and races and in South Island it hard enough to get a start at times so some are happy to start wherever for whatever just to get form

Good points. The problem is surely not the clubs who put up poor stakes and yet get decent fields, but the clubs who put up good stakes and end up with poor fields, often because of a dominating favourite.

Forbury and Cambridge?

Actually, a bit peeved for it to be suggested clubs like these get shut down.

Forbury and Cambridge play vital roles in harness racing in NZ.

Cambridge are very mindful of the stakes problem but it's like making a silk purse out of a sows ear.     They have just announced a restructuring plan in an endeavour to reduce costs.     I have always been of the opinion that racing on a cold wet windy winters Thursday night cannot be of any advantage to anyone - the club, the participants, the on course attendance or even off course betting.    Who wants to wait in conditions like these for 30 minutes between races 8 & 9 or 9 & 10 just because there is a bloody uninteresting dog race being run in the back of NSW or somewhere?      These smaller clubs need encouragement, not obstacles from both the Governing body and the Industry in general.    The new seasons calendar has just been released after months of waffling and scrapping and the end is result is - no change.  When something is broken it needs to be fixed - and not left to wither away!

Forbury provides a venue for horses to race who aren't competitive in Canterbury

It would be very detrimental to Harness Racing if it was to close down

Forbury also gives Southland trainers a relatively close racing venue after their season finishes.

I the "good old days" which many refer to on here with admiration racing ceased from early/ mid June to early August...certainly in Otago and South.

Do this again and there would be less meetings so stakes ,in theory ,could be higher for the remaining races.

The NZRB could then just rely on the Aussie racing for their betting commission etc...the way its heading now anyway .

Those $6000 stakes are pathetic and a disgrace....even $10k not good enough when you consider that costs rising daily.

In past 2 weeks , 3 x syndicate horses I have a small share in have been sold ,probably to Aussie ,so thats 3 x less horses.

Few people go to the races now on most nights ,less in the winter so it does surprise me some club hasn't at least trialled getting rid of the 30min gap between races and tried the warm up time as the gap between races.Get the races over before the rugby starts !
