A good initiative

Recommended Posts

Westbury stud are doing what I think is a really good initiative.

They are buying two yearlings from Gold Coast sale with aim of selling them at Karaka. All funds go back to those shareholders that invested in it.  The aim is to give people an experience of the sale side

They are selling 200 shares for $500 each

The Westbury Club

They purchased two lots, $10k and $32k.

Below is communication from them:

Please find attached information regarding the 2 horses the NZYC purchased at the Gold Coast Yearling sale last week. I am very pleased with the 2 colts and believe we have purchased the mix of athlete and pedigree at the right price. Obviously I had 2 of the best guiding us in Paul Willetts and Russell Warwick.

We will provide further information on the background to the Holy Roman Emperor (stable name Romeo) and the Smart Missile (stable name Cruise) in my next communication but felt it important to show those of you that have indicated early interest what we have purchased and give you an opportunity to be in first. I am sure it is not lost on you that Holy Roman Emperor is the top performing Stallion by earnings in Hong Kong (regular buyers at the sales) and the Sire of Mongolian Khan and Smart Missile is the leading second season Sire in Australia with 56 winners from 115 runners including 3 stakes winners.

Before we go to the wider group I would ask that you indicate how many shares you are interested in by Wednesday 7th June. We purchased 2 horses because of the overwhelming interest. We have structured the club so you, the owner, get to share in both. There will be 200 share units spread across the 2 horses and 1 share will cost $500.00 (including a $50.00 management fee).

We are allowing for purchase price plus approximately $20k per horse to cover all expenses – we have gone on the high side as all funds remaining at the end of the sales go back to the owners. Obviously we will be endeavouring to reduce costs where ever possible.

Personally I am excited about what is ahead. I make a commitment to communicate with you – at least once a fortnight updating you on the colts, stallions and pedigree performances. You will also get to view your horses at Westbury later this year and attend the sales as a guest of Westbury.

I look forward to meeting all fellow owners.

Latest communication is:

Greetings Westbury Club & NZ Yearling Club Owners,

Well the colts arrived in great shape, considering their busy few weeks of travel. Please see attached images – shot today. I wanted to include the headshot of Cruise – as he looks very much like his Dad. The other bruiser Romeo – is taking all in his stride and is a very relaxed type. They are settling into Westbury & our NZ Winter. It is now all about growing these boys into the best physical specimens possible come January. The specialist team at Westbury will make sure they have enough of everything to deliver that natural growth and keep them strong and healthy.

As you may have seen Smart Missile remains at number 1 on the winners to runners second season sires list in Australasia & Holy Roman Emperor continues to be the leading  Stallion in Hong Kong by earnings – long may this remain.

We are now fully subscribed. It has been a very successful launch – fingers crossed we also enjoy a very successful sale.

There is a stallion parade coming up at Westbury in the next few weeks and Russell would like to invite our members – I will be in touch with details soon and it is hoped we can parade our Colts.

16/11 communication

The two yearling colts in The Westbury Club’s NZYC Syndicate are well underway in their preparation for the Karaka 2018 Yearling Sales.

The boys officially commenced their prep in October and have settled into their new routine extremely well as expected having had the benefit of a weanling prep already.

The Routine

Each Monday morning the colts (Spina Rosa ’16 and Miss Judged ’16) come into their boxes to find their breakfast ready and waiting and have some downtime after spending the weekend in the paddock. They then spend a few hours a day in the outdoor yards before being brought back into their boxes for their evening feed – this is a routine that takes place Monday to Friday before returning to the paddock for a weekend of playing and relaxing.

In between feeding and outdoor play time the colts are groomed and exposed to a variety of activities including the horse-walker, hand-walked (with a groom), and washed to educate in a manner that will see them presented to advantage to bloodstock agents, trainers and potential buyers when they begin their inspections from mid-December onwards.

Holy Roman Emperor x Spina Rosa, yearling colt

"The warmer weather has seen the Spina Rosa colt improve considerably and he is shaping up to have good size and strength to him. We have been aware that the colt is a November foal and have not pushed him in the early stages of his preparation. I am pleased to say he is coming to hand nicely and the colt is really furnishing well and proving a very tractable horse to work with; he will present as a lovely yearling come January. Holy Roman Emperor has continued to prove his worth across the northern and southern hemisphere and is a very popular commodity in the Asian jurisdictions."

Russell Warwick, General Manager of Westbury Stud.

Smart Missile x Miss Judged, yearling colt

"The Miss Judged yearling has always looked a forward progressive type of colt, being well balanced with good natural muscle to him even as a weanling, one of the things that was attractive about him at the Magic Millions sales in May. The colt can be a bit cheeky from time to time but loves life and is very confident in himself. He is a good ‘doer’ (eats everything put in front of him) and will appeal to buyers looking for a quick return on their investment. The colt’s sire Smart Missile is another doing a grand job at stud, while the sons of Fastnet Rock have proven very popular across all southern hemisphere countries."

Christmas Greetings Shareholders,

I went to Westbury Stud and viewed the boys last week. They are thriving and looking in great order for the pending sale in 38 days time! The recent NZB Ready to Run sale provided good news for Smart Missile owners, like ourselves, with the 3 x Smart Missiles selling for for $350k, $350k and $100k respectively – 1 colt & 2 geldings. There are only 6 x Smart Missiles and 3 x Holy Roman Emperors in the January sale so I am picking they will attract some interest.

As you would have read on the Westbury (TWC) website both Cruise and Romeo have made the much coveted Karaka Sales Book 1. You can obtain NZB sales catalogues by contacting New Zealand Bloodstock direct.

Cruise, our Smart Missile Colt going through the ring around 1pm on Tuesday 30th & Romeo, our Holy Roman Emperor being sold around 1.20pm on Wednesday 31st. It will be an exciting, nail biting couple of days for us.

All shareholders are invited to attend the sales. Those of you who will attend one or both days please let me know at some stage. I will need to advise Westbury regarding hospitality and catering at the Westbury bar & café Marquee.

On January 19th all TWC / NZYC shareholders are invited to view our Yearlings and see them parade at Westbury Stud. They will then head down the road to NZB Karaka Stables in preparation for the sale. I will touch base with you all in the New Year to firm up on details and to see who will be attending.

Keep an eye on westburystud.com/westbury-club/index.cfm – Libby will be putting up photos and video of our Yearlings this week.

Merry Christmas to you all.

Kind Regards,

Tim Barry

Hi Team,

The good news is we sold our first Colt. Although we would have liked a few more dollars we were not unhappy with the sale at $60k. Russell and I were prudent with our reserve and decided on $50k – to sell $10k more than this was encouraging.

As many of you know many potential bidders / buyers like to obtain their own x-rays / vet checks prior to the sale - it is a good indicator of interest. Our Smart Missile had only 1 from a bidders chosen vet. Our Holy Roman Emperor, has had 6 x–ray / vet checks. This is significant. We are upbeat bidding on the colt will be strong. Russell and I have not yet set the reserve however the fact that we should have a number of bidders on the horse means we will have a much higher reserve. We will see where we are at in the morning and take it from there.

Great to have met a few of you at Karaka over the last couple of days – here’s hoping we have the chance to celebrate a good result tomorrow and those watching at home can “crack the good stuff".

Kind regards,

Tim

Westbury Club reaps rewards at Karaka

Westbury Stud launched a new pinhooking syndicate under their The Westbury Club banner last year and the inaugural syndicate was rewarded at Karaka this week.

The syndicate’s biggest result came when their Holy Roman Emperor colt (lot 615), a A$10,000 Gold Coast weanling purchase, was knocked down to Singapore trainer Cliff Brown for $140,000.

The brainchild of Buffalo &Co’s Tim Barry, the syndicate purchased two weanlings from the Gold Coast to sell at Karaka and Westbury Stud General Manager Russell Warwick said syndicate members were delighted with the result.

“It’s a big group of people and it’s done through our Westbury Club,” Warwick said. “Tim Barry was the instigator of it all and Tim just wanted a couple of weanlings for us to put through.

“He went across to the Gold Coast and he was one on the list that we were able to buy. We missed out on two or three, but we have done well and all the members seem to be happy.”

The Holy Roman Emperor colt was purchased by Barry with the belief that he would develop into a nice yearling.

“It’s a horse that we were fortunate developed well,” Warwick said.

“He’s a November foal and when we bought him he was probably a little bit behind the eight-ball, which probably most of the people pinhooking like to have a bit more of a guarantee, but he really grew into himself in the last six weeks and we reaped a bit of good fortune at the end of it.

“He’s a lovely scopey horse and he’s by Holy Roman Emperor and there’s obviously a lot of Asian interest there and he’s out of a Redoute’s Choice mare, put those together and we thought he could grow into a nice product and that he did.”

The syndicate’s other pinhook was a Smart Missile colt, who sold as Lot 388 on Tuesday. A A$35,000 weanling purchase, he was sold to Auckland’s Bitchoice Thoroughbreds for $60,000.

Yes I know one investor who bought shares for each of his children.  He took them to the auction which they found exciting.  Their enthusiasm was slightly subdued when he reminded them that he would retain the original investment.

I was very very happy with it on all fronts:

  • Low cost, so naturally just a fun interest
  • Great communication which increased knowledge
  • It made a profit.  Not sure on final figures, but it will be ahead of the market.
  • I would go again
