Recommended Posts

Here's a recording of tonights presentation. 1 hour 30 mins.

Sorry for the low quality of sound.

Special mentions

  1. TAB 20% Reductions compared to Australias 5%: 33 mins
  2. JA-Cost structure has to come down: 53:50 min

BUT Operating costs has gone up 0.8% for half year (this wont include high salaried employees eg Michele Pickles and others that start in May)
(Over 140 employees on over $100,000 per year) What do they do all year?

Staff expenses for 2016 were $66 million for 2016. Up $3.1million from 2015

3.Saving in staff costs after Paddy Power : 1:06.
JA- The Betting team has been growing significally (doesnt sound like any terminations) On 51:48

surely theres terminations/cuts after PP?

         4. What are the figures/estimation of NZRB have lost with the closure of the phone betting? 29:35min
JA-We modelled losing 18%. We have lost 10-12%

What is the ACTUAL AMOUNT OF MONEY LOST? NOT percentages!!!

Just a quick question on the race fields legislation, If I have a bet with an Australian bookmaker on say an NFL game the racing board thinks that they should receive a fee for that? Is that what John Allen is saying the legislation proposes? I also note he only mention Australian bookmakers, are UK bookmakers excluded?

140 is excessive and must be downsized to 100 at least

They call it Protecting the integrity of the NZ system.  See page 37: https://www.beehive.govt.nz/sites/all/files/Working Group - Final Report October 2015.pdf

So they budgeted to lose 18% revenue from closing phone betting yet their operating costs have gone up?  Unless phone betting was running at a significant loss the decision to drop it doesn't make sense.

Seems all they thought about was "operating". Phone betting operators should have been retrained as marketeers so that the phone operation turned into a friendly orientation exercise for new customers. That would mean education on all aspects of racing as well.  Plenty sponsors found e.g. Te Akau talking up a syndicate.

Thereafter any persistent betting users quietly discouraged.
