Industry Meeting @ Karaka Millions - Same Old Same Old

Recommended Posts

Guest 2Admin2

It appears onnly 2 things came out of the meeting, namely

1.  Recognising the need for increased industry support in the short term until the initiatives start to deliver returns.

Ms Hughes assured the group that these issues will be discussed by the NZRB Board at their meeting on 28 March 2017.

2.   During the meeting NZRB Chief Executive John Allen outlined his full confidence that the current NZRB management strategy will produce an additional $45 million of code distributions in 2018-19, growing to $60 million of additional funding in the 2019-20 season

Looking at 2015/16 being $147 million(including RIU), 16/17 say $150 million, so in round figures

                                              18/19     $195 million

                                              19/20     $210 million

Considering distributions have only grown in the last 4 years(excluding RIU) from 12/13 $137.4 million to 15/16 $141.2 million, a very confident prediction.

So what was achieved at the meeting other than more travel and food costs!  Where's Plan B Midget?

I haven't bothered to ask anyone, and I'm sure that if they wanted me ( and Cafe ) to know they'd have called me by now.

I did go racing last night but it's hard to chat to birds, drink champagne, back losers, and worry about racing politics all at the same time. If you're wondering politics ranks #4 in that list.

Anyway, having read the communique, I can only say it's a carefully worded and heavily sanitised statement about absolutely nothing useful......and NZ racing will thus get exactly what it deserves.

It's the same old fantasy though.  JA is just continuing the strategy of the past 10 years or more which is have more product (races, FOB options), gaming machines and account customers.  Nothing new in this.  Nothing difficult about it either.  Yes, they need new systems - but then where the hell have they been for the past decade?  It now appears that they will sack a whole bunch of staff as they replace IT - just as they did with TS.  But will there be fewer HR staff and Finance?  And lower salaries?  Doubt it.

The $45m extra distribution will likely be about $10m.  And distribution growth will be below 20 year trend in inflation terms.

Watch the fur fly over the next 12 months.

I think one of the techniques these guys use, is to put out so many reports and figures, that it becomes hard to dredge back and find everything, so I think a pinned thread with the data on is important(thanks Admin).

We won't bother with the Andrew Brown Racing Ahead as it was total fantasy land stuff.

The next key date for those following is March 28, when it would be hoped that short term industry measures are announced, until the 18/19 and 19/20 strategies start to yield the projected returns

That's true but honestly how were these guys employed in the first place? These optimistic forecasts are based on nothing but hot air and when they are revealed to be just that in two years Hughes and Allen will go and the industry will be in an even bigger hole, and probably make exactly the same mistake again.

Midget --" Anyway, having read the communique, I can only say it's a carefully worded and heavily sanitised statement about absolutely nothing useful. "

Totally agree , from my reading of the doc. The only thing I can possibly think of, for this "rambled" statement is they did not want to put out anything to ruffle feathers around Sales time --ie. they kicked the can down the road a bit. But I'll be the first to say that is absolute wishful thinking , on my part.

Something doesn’t quite ‘fit’, ha…

A week or so back, Midget proclaimed:

The plug is about to be pulled at the swamp

The big 5 clubs, plus the Trainers Assn, Jockeys Assn & breeders.

Big Glenda and "slippery" John Allen have been invited, and they will be required to answer a small number of previously submitted critical questions ( they'll be defiant as they always are ) then they'll be advised of the options being considered by the industry.

Exciting times ahead, on many fronts, it might be a good time to buy a yearling because the "stinking swamp is about to be drained"

Wish I could tell you more, do watch this space.

Today, Midget, asked what was actually achieved at the meeting, says:

I haven't bothered to ask anyone, and I'm sure that if they wanted me ( and Cafe ) to know they'd have called me by now.

I did go racing last night but it's hard to chat to birds, drink champagne, back losers, and worry about racing politics all at the same time. If you're wondering politics ranks #4 in that list.

So Midget was talking through his rear-end about swamp-draining?

More ‘much loud talk, but precious little action’?

In other words, same old, same old from the industry?

Prediction:

A report will come out wherein all parties (well, all the parties who were invited) pledge to:

Work together

Set super-vague performance targets for 2021/22

and

Set up a committee to decide on which colour sand they should all stick their heads into for the next five years…

Why you would have a serious meeting at a social occasion like the Millions is strange. Not good to distract purchasers from buying decisions and trainers from socialising with clients.  Soon as the champagne was sniffed everything else obviously forgotten.

Excellent post Disillusioned. Post after post of what should be done, what should be asked of Glenda and Co. and then when they're across the birdcage from him we are too busy. Strange.

Relax boys, I'm sure when they're ready they'll spill their guts.

That said I was at the sales today and not one person mentioned it.

Not sure where you get the idea we had any control over what Glenda should've been asked Torch, that was always a case of previously submitted set questions with no open forum, and whilst I have some questions here I don't think they're the final draft and I'm not at liberty to publish them.

Anyway I wasn't involved so if you're unhappy I suggest you address it with whatever federation you belong to, trainers, jockeys, owners or breeders.

I was at the sales today and a few mentioned it. Basic train of thought was that we are fcuked and no one has an answer. No one was expecting or depending on yesterday's 'swamp draining' meeting to produce anything more than it did, which appears nothing.

However the breeders seem happy...

Plenty of answers, but youre fcuked when no one listens and you have the wrong people in the wrong places making the wrong decisions!

Only hope is if change happens at the top, its certainly salvageable but watch a couple of interviews of the personnel leading this industry then its easy to understand why we are fcuked.

The breeders are in heaven - everyone else is watching - watching their lives get shafted. And they put on the show - Stop the show - wake up guys - pull the pin

I think quite a few breeders got a reality check today Turny, the pass in rate was high, going on the pre - 'show' hype they thought it was put in take out.......unrealistic reserves, not meeting the market. Tomorrow may be different, a strong session pedigree wise, however the real judging will come Wed onward, then we'll see how the industry sits. Asia was very very quiet today, if it continues pain will set in for the needy and greedy and the dough eyed racing minister and the delusional Petone set will circle the wagons.
